As Ser Jorah Mormont...

froggy
... we have Iain Glen, another distinguished British veteran of stage and screen.

Glen has a really great website at http://www.iainglen.com/ Check it out. Not only does he have a list of all his credits, but the site includes clips from many of the film and television roles, so you can get a wonderful sample of his range and talents. I wish more actors had websites this good.

One of his credits was KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, Ridley Scott's marvelous film about the Crusades and the fall of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Nicolaj Coster-Waldau also had a role in that film, hence the "gone to the wars" clue. But Coster-Waldau was not a kingslayer there, which was good for Glen, since he played Richard the Lionhearted. And killing Richard before his time would certainly have changed history. KINGDOM OF HEAVEN was filmed in Morocco... and Glen will be returning to those same locations to shoot the Pentos scenes for our pilot.

Iain Glen also appeared in MOUNTAINS OF THE MOON, co-starring as Speke to Patrick Bergin's Richard Burton. A wonderful performance in a fine film. Of course the character he will be playing in the HBO pilot, Ser Jorah Mormont, has never seen the Mountains of the Moon in Westeros, although the actor has seen the African version.

Like many of the best British actors, Iain Glen is a chameleon who often disappears into his roles. Visit his website and play some of his clips, and you may realize you have seen more of his work than you realize. He won't just play Ser Jorah, he'll BECOME him.

That's Ser Seven, and that's all folks.

For now.

Wow...excellent casting all around. Theon is the only one who really doesn't look like I had him pictured. No matter...as long as he can act. I look forward to this more and more with each casting post.

Connection to Catelyn
Cool connection -
Iain Glen was married to Susannah Harker who played Jane Bennet to Jennifer Ehle's Lizzy Bennet in the 1995 BBC Pride and Prejudice, and Jennifer Ehle will play Catelyn Stark.

Maybe GRRM reads a lot of Jane Austin?

The Hound
Oh please don't cast an old guy for the Hound, his scenes with Sansa are so romantic and erotic, I couldn't bear if it'd feel creepy all of a sudden.
Well, that's me making demands. LOL

Re: The Hound
Old guy? No, but... the Hound is still a whole lot older than Sansa, and was never written as attractive... you know, those hideous burns and all that... he's a lot more dangerous than he is romantic.

Re: The Hound
Hehe, George, maybe you didn't intend it, but he turned out to be a very erotic character to female readers. Especially since he's mutilated and dangerous. Makes him unpredictable and vulnerable which is the most explosive aphrodisiac for a girl's fantasy.

Re: The Hound
I also don't want to see someone too old cast as the Hound, for an additional reason. I think it says a lot about his character that he is relatively young and yet has such a grim outlook. I know plenty of 40+ men with the same sort of attitude. However, most of the men I know in their mid-twenties still seem pretty hopeful. The fact that Sandor is only in his twenties and is already so jaded adds an intriguing facet to his character, IMHO.

But I sure wouldn't kick someone like Ray Stevenson off my TV set.

Re: The Hound
That's exactly what I'm talking about.
It felt as if Sansa was the one spark to awake a beautiful soul hidden beneath the ashes of doom.

I have a lot of tender feelings for Sam Tarly, but he doesn't sizzle the was Sandor does (literally).

Actors
Iain Glen looks a bit young for Mormont, but aside from that they all seem great.

Am v excited at all the recent casting news, though this is rather disconnected from all that
Jeeeeeez. Can I just thank you for endorsing The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch? I probably would have gotten around to it eventually, but when I saw your name on the cover I had to start reading it. Immediately. And by God, I'm a fan.

So (even though a certain scene will probably court nightmares for weeks to come), thank you again for helping to point me in this book's direction! Much appreciated. It's been ages since I found any author so nearly on par with you and Guy Kay :)

It's too bad (as per your most recent post) that some people have bad manners. If you are happy with the cast, we should all be happy with the cast, as you know the characters better than we do. Iain Glen looks just right.

Usually when I love a certain book or series of books, I don't really want to see the movie/mini-series/TV show, because the books are always so much better, but from reading your posts lately, I am actually kind of excited to see it now.

Ser Jorah vs. Ned Stark
Don't get me wrong, I like Iain Glen. But given his resemblance to Sean Bean (especially when they're both bearded up), I have to wonder what sort of sense it makes to cast Glen as Ser Jorah and Bean as Ned Stark.

For the pilot, fine. But if the series is picked up? I'd seriously suggest reversing this casting.

Cersei
Somebody suggested Sarah Wynter for Cersei.
I'd really hope she would answer the call, she could pass for the twin...

I always imagined Jorah as a bit more buff/muscular than Mr. Glen (could be all the "bear" references getting to me), but his face looks just fine for the part (particularly the shots from The Crucible where he's looking rather grizzled).

Excellent choice there. He will make for a convincing Jorah, no doubt.

This is off topic, but how would one go about auditioning for a role? I heard casting was being done in LA and NY, but I can't find any information online. Help?

love the castings, and Kingdom of Heaven rocked.
you go GRRM. Now my last remaining wish in life is for the HBO series to kick some serious ratings butt, which will in turn force the author to re-prioritize the writing of the series, so the HBO series can continue beyond season 4... ;-)

This is shaping up to be one awesome show
Another great actor added to the list! On a side note, for those of you who haven't seen the extended version of Kingdom of Heaven, watch it! It's one of those rare films that really benefits from the extra scenes, and it's almost like a whole new movie (in a good way!).

I get the feeling that this HBO series is going to be a huge hit with such a great story and cast, but I'm a bit worried. It wouldn't happen for at least 5 years, but what happens if the TV series catches up to the novels?

Either way, I'm super excited :) I'd like to see the series completed on HBO, but I'd be happy to see just one episode!

I think he is the perfect choice for sir. johah. I do think he is going to have to gain some weight and muscle though, his face looks very much like that of a man with strong character.

Thanks for this grreat casting :)
I am speechless! The casting is going far beyond all my expectations! Not only for the unsurpassable actors they have cast, but for the good likeness of them with your characters.

Great job, HBO (I wish we could suscribe to HBO here is Spain -_-). These days are making me so much anxious and happy I've come to think that I have actually a reason to wake up every morning heheh.

THANKS SO MUCH, Mr. Martin. There are no words enough to thank you properly!

Casting...
This is quite irrelevant to this post (aside from being about casting) but having just rewatched HBO powerhouse Deadwood again - is there any way to get Ian McShane somewhere into the production? I think he would fit perfectly into the dark world of A Song of Ice and Fire - his role as Al Swearengen was genius, a perfect portrayal of a ruthless bastard who is human and, at times, likable.

I've finally got a chance to watch his film clips. (Strangely, I hadn't seen any of the movies before.) You're right: he is an excellent actor at a wide variety of roles. And what a cool website, indeed.

Jorah Mormont
I always had a sort of crush for Jorah Mormont... He seems to be so tormented and sad and... in love.
And I must admit: the actor who plays his role is damn HOT, more than I ever expected. Especially while he's wearing his armor. Oh Seven Gods, I LOVE men with armors!
Anyway, good choise: Iain Glen is very talented and fits perfect to Jorah, IMHO.
