Off to our local convention in Albuquerque this weekend. Stop by if you're in the neighborhood. Bubonicon is a smallish (about 500 people), friendly convention with a decided literary slant. This year the GOH is my old pal Michael Cassutt, a colleague from my TWILIGHT ZONE days and a veteran of the Hollywood wars. Mike is sharp and cynical and always fun to share a beer with, and we'll be doing some panels together and talking about where the bodies are buried. Also on hand will be toastmaster Carrie Vaughn, a whole phalanx of Wild Carders, S.M. Stirling, Trent Zelazny, Diana Galbaldon, and many other good folks.
My reading is at 5pm tomorrow. Will probably read a chapter from DANCE, haven't decided which one yet.
Meanwhile, off across the water, casting continues. The latest auditions I have screened were for "Nameless Eunuch" and "Red-Headed Whore." (Remember, there are no small parts. Red-Headed Whore has a great line). Only one part has been filled since the Secret Seven were announced, but I expect to hear about more castings Real Soon Now.

So what would a science fiction fanzine have to do with casting...hmmmmm
If HBO is casting whores and eunuchs as speaking roles than it confirms my hopes that this series (assuming it is picked up) will seriously rock. Just out of curiosity, might there be a way for those of us who sign up for HBO to contact their home office (or equivalent) to voice our support?

... then again, he wouldn't show up until the second or third episode, would he.
No matter; I can say hello here. I essentially created this LiveJournal account so I could comment on George's fantastic casting news and to yell at him for having two football teams. I'll yell in earnest when the season starts and my Rams start getting killed again.
For now I want to say: have fun at the con, and when you have a moment, sit back, have a cup of whatever you like, and take a moment to smile. You have perhaps a tiny percentage of your fanbase being critical of some of the casting choices, and a gigantic percentage throwing love and support your way. The mosquitoes can only buzz. Turn from them and bask in the adoration.
I know sometimes people in the spotlight can feel a little put-upon, but at the end of the day you've created something great that will live longer than you, me, Dick Clark, the Olsen twins, and all eight octobabies. And if this bad boy actually gets on screen ... whooo boy.
That's a day's work there.
So have fun at the con, give us your grin, and suggest to your co-producers the Westeros boards’ idea for George R. R. Martin's GoT cameos:
Wherever we see heads on spikes, we see the author amongst them.
GRRM: "Yes, I know. Heads. On spikes."
Axechucker (formerly and forever, About Yea High)
About the casting, I read at westeros that there are indications that the Hound has been cast as well.
Have fun at bubonicon George!
Keep up the good work (and if possible please try to find a convention in the UK some time so i can come see you and get my books signed :-) )
All the best
Stuart
Have you found a Hodar yet? I am 7'1" around 300 lbs and feel I would be perfect for the part. But don't take my word for it, judge for yourself http://xenophon.page.tl/ Here you will find photos and a short bio. Anyone who agrees, please post your affirmation to help my cause.
And "Red-Headed Whore" sounds like something my sister has called me... maybe I should audition... ; )
I can't remember right off-hand. I'm a bad fan.
This is a bit random, but I was just wondering - when you wrote the character Jaime Lannister, was your mental pronunciation of Jaime something more along the lines of Jamie (Jay-mee) or closer to Haim, like Spanish or French? I realize you like to leave names open to interpretation, but you yourself must at the very least have a mental pronunciation of the J versus the H sound, and I'm just hopelessly curious as to which you had in mind.
Good luck at your reading, and keep up the good work on Dances!
