As Cersei Lannister...

... yes, we have the superb British actress Lena Headey.

That's not news, I know. The CHICAGO TRIBUNE broke the story, and the casting has been confirmed by the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, Reuters, and numerous other blogs and websites. But just in case there were any doubts, this should put 'em to rest.

Lena is best known among genre fans for playing Sarah Connor in the recently cancelled Fox show THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES. Sarah, of course, was played in the TERMINATOR films by Linda Hamilton, who was also Catherine on BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. Yes, that was the "Six Degrees" clue, with Sarah Connor as the link.

Lena also starred as Queen Gorgo of Sparta in the film 300, whence came my two "Gorgo" clues, one playing off the old monster movie GORGO (see below), the other off the actual historical Queen Gorgo, as chronicled by Herodotus, Father of History.

(Some folks have complained that the clues were too hard. Maybe so. Hard to judge these things. Originally I had intended to write that the search for our queen had been terminated after looking at three hundred actresses, but Parris convinced me that you lot would have solved that one in about six seconds. So blame her.)

Lena Headey has played all sorts of other roles besides Queen Gorgo and Sarah Connor, of course. Check out her credits on IMDB. She's even worked with Jennifer Ehle (our Catelyn) in POSSESSION, she played Guinevere in MERLIN, she's appeared in many period pieces and even a few set during the medieval period. Her range was one of the things that impressed us most about her; Cersei is a character with many colors, and Lena will be able to give us all of them. Her readings were wonderful... and of course she's beautiful and sexy as hell.

Yes, it's true, she's not a blonde, but she has played one on TV (and in films). Seriously, guys. This is HBO. They know about wigs and hair dyes and stuff like that.

Lena should be amazing as the queen you love to hate. I'm thrilled to have her aboard.

George: You never explained your reasoning behind the Mr. Miyagi clue. I think I read somewhere that there is a "wax off" line her character says in 300, or something like that. But since you solved the rest I'd welcome an official explanation.

Not that you should set aside writing book 5 if you are on a creative-roll just to satisfy my minor curiosity... I can probably live without knowing in that case :)

He did post the reference in the comments to the previous post I think... it's an anecdote taken from the writing of Herodotus about Queen Gorgo, the character from 300. It has to do with taken the wax off of a tablet to reveal the hidden message beneath. :)

I think she'll be great :)

I've only seen Headey in a few things -- TSCC not among them -- but as others have remarked on the forum, it seems she'll be playing against type in some ways; she doesn't seem to have ever played a character quite so cruel or ambitious as Cersei. Should be exciting to see how she interprets the character.

The casting has really been very exciting. And speaking of Grand Maester Pycelle in your earlier post, I'm kind of hoping that Roy Dotrice has auditioned for him... or if not him, if there's a season order (*knock on wood*), Maester Aemon.

Roy Dotrice for Pycelle! °C° Perfect!

just my opinion
Yes, she's beautiful. But too dark complected. They're going to have to dye those eyebrows...even with a wig or dye job, the blond hair is still going to look fake on such a dark complexion. It's going to be distracting. Not my vision of Cersei at all.

Nooooo! Hard is better than easy! Even if I have no clue (which is the usual case!) it's still a whole lot of fun guessing! I'd rather work at it and not get it than to be able to guess it too easily.

I could not be effing happier. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

A true beauty, and she has a devilishly sexy voice as well. Can't wait to see her get drawn into the dark, paranoid mess that is Cersei Lannister.

As for the clues, I enjoyed these more than the rest. I'm useless at that sort of thing, but others figured out your previous quicker than I could come up with some apparently not-so educated guesses of my own!

Well, she isn't remotely how I envisioned Cersei, but she seems to be a very good actress. However, I have only ever seen her in a "good guy" role, so it will be interesting to see if she can be as ruthless and unforgiving as Cersei.

Hmm... *squints*

Yeah, I can see it.

dark hair
She looks much better with dark (brown) hair to be honest. :)

I loved her in Terminator Sarah Connor Chronicles! I'm very glad to see she's got another great role.

Can you get Summer Glau too please? :)
Sep. 3rd, 2009 04:53 pm (UTC)
I KNOW it's not for the pilot episode, but a WHOLE new group of fanboys would flock to the show is Summer was cast, as say....maybe....Shae? :) Yum

That's one of the most exciting castings yet. Very nice choice!
Sep. 2nd, 2009 09:42 pm (UTC)
She will make a great Cersei. She can pull off that sneaky look I always imagine Cersei has on her face, that she knows something important that others do not.

Horribly Cruel
It is horribly cruel to cast the character I HATE.. hate with the fires of a thousand suns, hate with every fiber of my being.. (Yes, I did just read a Cersei chapter again).. cruel to cast the bitch with someone I LOVE. Oh, how my heart is torn in too now.

That being said, she was my mental first pick for Catelyn (as I can't read her chapter in GoT where she and Ned discuss the Hand and she gets the box from Lysa without thinking of the bedroom scene in 300.) But man... her as Cersei will be killer. I have ultimate faith. I have been bouncing around all afternoon.

Me too, man! But this might help her avoid typecasting, since she's played similar types in the roles people tend to know her for.

BAHAHAHAHA! This cracked me up :D

She was fab in 300. I can definitely see her bringing the bitch needed to play Cersei.
Sep. 3rd, 2009 12:19 am (UTC)
EPIC! Sarah Lena as Cersei? I can so see this happening. Jeebus, as if I wasn't psyched already :D

Thank you. Everyone I know seems stuck on the superficial things like hair and skin color, all of which can be easily changed, and forget to look at the more important things like facial structure.
Sep. 3rd, 2009 01:09 am (UTC)
Facial structure... and *acting ability*. In the end, they can do almost anything with a person's physical appearance, but the ability to act out the character convincingly can't be airbrushed on.

Great actress. She turned "Sarah Connors" from a shoot-up spin-off to a moving character study of a mother protecting her son. She'll be protecting her progeny in "Thrones" as well, and while that compassion may be missing, her intelligence and strength will be fierce.
Sep. 3rd, 2009 12:41 am (UTC)
The cast is getting better and better, I can't wait to see all the characters in the book come to life.I wish that northern Ireland actors will be featured more in the series, beside Jack Gleeson I'm sure that the majority of supporting actors and some of the major ones will be from NI.
Sep. 3rd, 2009 01:02 am (UTC)
She looks like she'll be amazing. The entire cast so far looks incredible!
Sep. 3rd, 2009 01:10 am (UTC)
She has the most gorgeous green eyes and she does crazy very well.
Also, she's beautiful. I'd never even have considered her, but I'm absolutely confident Lena'll make me forget about Sarah Connor completely. I can't wait to see this!
Sep. 3rd, 2009 01:11 am (UTC)
So far I am MOST excited about her!
She is amazing, and I just can't wait to see it!

How does HBO afford all these great actors together in one show?

The two priciest, Mark Addy and Sean Bean, will be gone by the middle of the first season, but still - the remaining actors are names with enough experience in film and television to demand a nice salary. On top of that, it's set in a parallel medieval Europe with flashes of the Mongol steppes.

Has this come up, George? If so, what have you been told?
Sep. 3rd, 2009 01:48 am (UTC)
Personally, I was burned out on her as Sarah Connor by the end. But that was only one character, and as you say, she has been in many other roles. Clearly she is a very talented actress and will bring some very passionate fans with her.

The casting on this show has been amazing and it feels like HBO is pulling out all the stops. While the show can't ever be as great as the books ;) it appears that HBO is doing all that they can to make the divide as small as possible. Congratulations on what is shaping up to be a big hit! :)

Eeeee! I loved her in The Brothers Grimm and on Terminator, and I'm very excited about this news! Congratulations and I can't wait!
