As Cersei Lannister...

... yes, we have the superb British actress Lena Headey.

That's not news, I know. The CHICAGO TRIBUNE broke the story, and the casting has been confirmed by the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, Reuters, and numerous other blogs and websites. But just in case there were any doubts, this should put 'em to rest.

Lena is best known among genre fans for playing Sarah Connor in the recently cancelled Fox show THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES. Sarah, of course, was played in the TERMINATOR films by Linda Hamilton, who was also Catherine on BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. Yes, that was the "Six Degrees" clue, with Sarah Connor as the link.

Lena also starred as Queen Gorgo of Sparta in the film 300, whence came my two "Gorgo" clues, one playing off the old monster movie GORGO (see below), the other off the actual historical Queen Gorgo, as chronicled by Herodotus, Father of History.

(Some folks have complained that the clues were too hard. Maybe so. Hard to judge these things. Originally I had intended to write that the search for our queen had been terminated after looking at three hundred actresses, but Parris convinced me that you lot would have solved that one in about six seconds. So blame her.)

Lena Headey has played all sorts of other roles besides Queen Gorgo and Sarah Connor, of course. Check out her credits on IMDB. She's even worked with Jennifer Ehle (our Catelyn) in POSSESSION, she played Guinevere in MERLIN, she's appeared in many period pieces and even a few set during the medieval period. Her range was one of the things that impressed us most about her; Cersei is a character with many colors, and Lena will be able to give us all of them. Her readings were wonderful... and of course she's beautiful and sexy as hell.

Yes, it's true, she's not a blonde, but she has played one on TV (and in films). Seriously, guys. This is HBO. They know about wigs and hair dyes and stuff like that.

Lena should be amazing as the queen you love to hate. I'm thrilled to have her aboard.

I like the actress, but this I'm going to have to see for it to work, because I just, well, don't see her as Cersei. I could imagine her as Catelyn Stark much more easily.

Even though I can't really picture her as a blonde, she's a great actress and I'm really looking forward to seeing her as Cersei. Now I just hope that there will be this kind of special "alchemy" between her and Jaime to make their relationship as fascinating on the screen as it is in the books...

Just looking at her makes me feel like I'm looking at Cersei. Even with black hair she's perfect for the part.

As i posted in past entry, I'm sooooo thrilled Lena has been cast.
She's one of the hottest women in the biz, and a solid actress. She will definitely fit the part.

Fantastic! I will cease and desist mourning the untimely demise of the Sarah Connor Chronicles immediately.

Well she certainly has a fantastic 'Oh' face. Throughout most of 300 she had a sullen look that I didn't particularly care for, but her oh scene...really got the blood pumping. I reserve judgment as to whether she is best suited to play Cersei. My girlfriend (who finally responded to my incessant prodding and is now three quarters done with aCoK) is furious. In Hena's defense, she is making this judgment based solely on Sarah Conner. Despite reminding her it was the writers fault for her character being about as asseseble and enjoyable as a cactus dildo, that never the less didn't stop off handed comments and tea kettle like sighs as I tried to mindlessly enjoy looking at Summer and Hena and homicidal futuristic robots. I look forward to finally seeing her in a role where the writing will let her display the range of a character as devilishly complex as Cersei( I'm sure they'll be plenty more 'oh' scenes too) Teehee. I only hope she's convincing enough to spare me my girl's eye rolling and sighs, cause for this show I wouldn't even want heavy breathers in the room with me for fear of them spoiling something so special it might actually, finally leave me capable of starting to forgive HBO for canceling Rome.

George: You never explained your reasoning behind the Mr. Miyagi clue. I think I read somewhere that there is a "wax off" line her character says in 300, or something like that. But since you solved the rest I'd welcome an official explanation.

Not that you should set aside writing book 5 if you are on a creative-roll just to satisfy my minor curiosity... I can probably live without knowing in that case :)

He did post the reference in the comments to the previous post I think... it's an anecdote taken from the writing of Herodotus about Queen Gorgo, the character from 300. It has to do with taken the wax off of a tablet to reveal the hidden message beneath. :)

I've only seen Headey in a few things -- TSCC not among them -- but as others have remarked on the forum, it seems she'll be playing against type in some ways; she doesn't seem to have ever played a character quite so cruel or ambitious as Cersei. Should be exciting to see how she interprets the character.

The casting has really been very exciting. And speaking of Grand Maester Pycelle in your earlier post, I'm kind of hoping that Roy Dotrice has auditioned for him... or if not him, if there's a season order (*knock on wood*), Maester Aemon.

just my opinion
Yes, she's beautiful. But too dark complected. They're going to have to dye those eyebrows...even with a wig or dye job, the blond hair is still going to look fake on such a dark complexion. It's going to be distracting. Not my vision of Cersei at all.

Nooooo! Hard is better than easy! Even if I have no clue (which is the usual case!) it's still a whole lot of fun guessing! I'd rather work at it and not get it than to be able to guess it too easily.
