As Cersei Lannister...

... yes, we have the superb British actress Lena Headey.

That's not news, I know. The CHICAGO TRIBUNE broke the story, and the casting has been confirmed by the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, Reuters, and numerous other blogs and websites. But just in case there were any doubts, this should put 'em to rest.

Lena is best known among genre fans for playing Sarah Connor in the recently cancelled Fox show THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES. Sarah, of course, was played in the TERMINATOR films by Linda Hamilton, who was also Catherine on BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. Yes, that was the "Six Degrees" clue, with Sarah Connor as the link.

Lena also starred as Queen Gorgo of Sparta in the film 300, whence came my two "Gorgo" clues, one playing off the old monster movie GORGO (see below), the other off the actual historical Queen Gorgo, as chronicled by Herodotus, Father of History.

(Some folks have complained that the clues were too hard. Maybe so. Hard to judge these things. Originally I had intended to write that the search for our queen had been terminated after looking at three hundred actresses, but Parris convinced me that you lot would have solved that one in about six seconds. So blame her.)

Lena Headey has played all sorts of other roles besides Queen Gorgo and Sarah Connor, of course. Check out her credits on IMDB. She's even worked with Jennifer Ehle (our Catelyn) in POSSESSION, she played Guinevere in MERLIN, she's appeared in many period pieces and even a few set during the medieval period. Her range was one of the things that impressed us most about her; Cersei is a character with many colors, and Lena will be able to give us all of them. Her readings were wonderful... and of course she's beautiful and sexy as hell.

Yes, it's true, she's not a blonde, but she has played one on TV (and in films). Seriously, guys. This is HBO. They know about wigs and hair dyes and stuff like that.

Lena should be amazing as the queen you love to hate. I'm thrilled to have her aboard.

Excellent Choice
Lena is a brilliant actress and was fantastic in Sarah Connor, one of the best shows on TV the past 2 years. Great to see her on board.

Great choice indeed. She was one of the only nuanced parts of Terminator...

Inspired!!! I have been so frakkin pleased by all of the choices so far. I don't have HBO but you better believe a will when this premieres!!!

Really cool....but dont loose sight.
All this is really cool, and I'm glad to see this come to fruition. But can you please finish the next book before I go to Iraq in March. I dont mean to push you, and I know how difficult it is to write, especially when you have other things on your mind.

I have to say, while I have faith in HBO to produce an amazing series and to do justice by the books, I can understand people's apprehensions over colouring.

Us literary fans have been burned by Hollywood types before - I am sure everyone can think of a movie/miniseries/series that changed the appearance of a character for no discernable reason. In the case of ASOIAF I think how the characters look plays a big part in the plot so much so that we're getting a little anxious.

That being said, I think Lena Headey is a good match in facial structure (what I picture, of course) and thus I am super excited to see her as Cersei.

She'll be awesome.

but on another note...

Hey George!
Any idea who's gonna do the scoring? Don't let 'em skimp on a good composer for the pilot. A bad musical score can ruin everything!

Yeah, I was wondering this, too. And cinematographer.

Parris was right
That 300 clue would have indeed been WAY too obvious. Continue listening to Parris. :-)

Oh yes! Lena is gorgeous and I loved her role as Gorgo. She has the carriage and mannerism befitting a Queen and I do think she'd be able to pull off seductive and down-right manipulative. I also saw some clips of her as a blonde and she does look gorgeous with that coloring too, which is a plus. (Some people just can't carry certain coloring.)

as cersei lannister...
just basing her work in 300, I believe she will make indeed make a great cersei. HBO's casting crew seems to be doing a great job so far!

Remember how we all used to make fantasy casts, and then laugh about how unreasonable they were? A bunch of the actors who have been cast were on my list, including Lena Headey... I'm so stoked.

Holy cow. This one is definitely "too good to be true" as well. I can't believe it! She was wonderful in "300" and she (and Summer Glau) were the only two reasons I stayed tuned for Sarah Connor Chronicles. I think she'll bring so much of Cersei's many facets to the screen.

She can handle a strong female role and remain feminine. I'm sorry the Sarah Connor Chronicles died. I liked her in 300 and Beauty and the Beast. I'm going to LOVE her as Cersei!

(Still chuckling about the wigs and hair dyes line. Heh.)

Awesome casting
She is fucking hot. Can't wait to see her as cersei! :D

You might be interested in a blog post my fellow writer Brandon Sanderson (author of Mistborn/Warbreaker and finishing up Jordan's Wheel of Time) who made a mention of you in his blog post. I think you might appreciate his thoughts. Cheers!

George, this time I agree with you:)

Lena Headey
Excellent news, a good casting choice indeed. She is soo beautiful and talented. I am sure she will add tremendously to this project.

I was quite bummed when the powers that be at FOX (read s*itheads) cancelled, as they have done soo many times before (will never forgive them for "Firefly") cancelled "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles".

I guess in the end though, it worked out for the best. FOX's loss is our gain. This getting to be a quite impressive array of people involved with this project. I hope this bodes well for the future!

Re: Lena Headey
Seriously right? If AGoT manages to get 1, count the 1 of Serenity's crew, HBO's subscriber base, will floweth over with the Whendonites. Plus they are good, and I'm sure given a half an hour, and a house list, I could place them all in fantasy spots!

I dont really know how it works with HBO-Series but I think alone the fact that we now have some well knows actors in the show should be helpful to create enough attention from audience who doesn´t know about "ASOIAF" to get the show going. At least I hope so.

Greetz from Germany, the country which is still waiting for your visit Mr. Martin-:)

Another great casting coup. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles' loss is our gain.

(Dollhouse's gain too, but that's another subject entirely.)

T:TSCC had its moments - usually pretty good acting, even from that 90210 kid - but in other times it came off as an ode to The A-Team. And that's not something you necessarily want on your ode to list. The writing could have used a dose of realism here or there; one cannot help but wonder, time and time again, must the TV military always be that stupid?

Anyway. I did not come to bury Caesar. All hail Queen Cersei, First of her Name!

Yes I'm very satisfied. Lovely work they have done so far. Very good looking lady, and she had made a lasting impression on me as Queen Sparta. Also, she has a noticable face, she might be very pretty, but there's something slightly off with her face, just as our Jamie. I can't put my finger on it, but it's there, and it's what makes her perfect! Yup, she's a great choice.

As someone mentioned before, the choices made so far were, in some cases, actors/actresses we never thought we would be allowed to have. Which makes this casting so far even more exciting!

Hail to the Queen
I sound my barbarian YAWP over the roofs of the world .......... what a fantastic & brilliant choice ............ Congrats

Sorry but I have many doubts about her Playing Cersei. I mean...she's a great actress and she's a very beautiful woman (I like her so much!!), but I just can't immagine her like Cersei. She would be a perfect Catelyn I think, because she has a sort of "serious" beauty...with a bit of sadness sometimes. Cersei on the other hand is real "men-eater". Dunno...
Sep. 3rd, 2009 05:55 pm (UTC)
Thinking it over, here we have too much beauty to spend on Catelyn. Now I'm noticing it much better, Lena will easily outmatch every other female contender in the field.
Sep. 3rd, 2009 01:36 pm (UTC)
she is going to be an amazing cersei absolutely amazing. I Loved her in 300 and I love how fiesty she is. That is going to be FANTASTIC!!! okay Im going to stop gushing.
Sep. 3rd, 2009 02:36 pm (UTC)
Once her hair is dyed, DEFINITELY!
Sep. 3rd, 2009 03:01 pm (UTC)
A little off topic but how is her name meant to be pronounced?

KER- see
SIR -see
SIR- say

Sep. 3rd, 2009 04:06 pm (UTC)
I love her! Though, in 300, she wasn't quite as adept at using sex to her advantage - but character comparisons mean nothing.

I just had a disturbing though...Mr. Martin...Ser Martin, if you will, did HBO ask you to delay completion and publishing of DWD to coincide with the release of the pilot?

I understand if you can neither confirm nor deny, but such a situation would make me a very, very sad panda.

Re: Uh-oh....
It would be very hard (the Ferengi would say 'unprofitable') to miss that opportunity IMO. I was thinking about the same myself.
