Calendar Update

Sorry, there will be no 2010 Ice & Fire calendar. After our deal with DBPro was terminated, there was simply not enough time to find a new publisher, negotiate a contract, hire an artist, and get twelve paintings done so the calendar could be released on schedule. A calendar really needs to be released by Halloween at the latest... some 2010 calendars are already in the stores now, in early September... so....

However, I do expect to have some exciting news about the 2011 calendar Real Soon Now. And that one WILL be released on schedule.

I hope you get Michael Komarck to do the 2011 artwork. his work is amazing, imho

Komarck is wonderful, but he did the 2009 calendar.

The idea is to feature a different artist every year.

Komarck will continue to do his stunning covers for Wild Cards, however.

I'm torn. Given the quality of the work he did for this year's calendar, I'd like to see Komarck hired to do the art for all things Ice & Fire...but somewhere out there is an amazing new artist we'll never get to see if he or she doesn't get to do a calendar or cover.

(Seriously, though, if you want some free work from a student artist for anything at all, let me know - it'd just be awesome to work on your characters (even if they aren't for Ice and Fire) for you.)

isn't about half the theme of this Blog complaining about people who complain about dance being late?

Dance is gonna come out eventually and it's gonna be great. and then we're all gonna go buy it and spend all night reading it and most of us will have it done within a week or two. and we'll all talk about it and how great it was. then we'll wait a week and we'll all start getting sad because the next book's not ready and probably wont be for another few years.

We all are fans of George's writing and yes for many of us our first taste was A Game of Thrones. now we have a blog to follow. and i promise you you'll spend more time looking at this and enjoying George's posts (bitching about people like you either complaining or snidely making such comments about the book taking a while) between Dance and the next book than you will actually reading Dance.

Will there be Prints of the artwork available in the 09 calendar or is there a site/link they can be viewed at?
I haven't seen the calendar and judging by the September image and the Cover image i'd really like to see the rest of the artwork.
Also, (George if you're reading this) is it possible to switch the DWD sample chapter to the tyrion one, I haven't read that yet.
Keep up the amazing work! You're series is the best i've ever read.

Though if you don't mind my asking, I believe that I recall having seen calendars that were only one sheet, much like a poster, in which all 12 months were printed at the bottom. Might something like that be at all possible, as it would only involve one image rather than 12? Or maybe even just a poster? The idea may not be feasible, but I hope that there is no harm in suggesting it. :)

Well, we'll just have to flip the 2008 calendar back to the beginning and just act surprised each month when we see the pics. I don't use calendars for the date anyway, just the artwork.

Why not just release a book of artwork with a title like "The Art of Westeros" or "Artwork of a Song of Ice and Fire. That way you can include your favorite book covers, have more than just twelve images, and don't have to worry about releasing it within a certain calender year. Just a thought.

Nice thought. Already been done.The Art of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire can be found on Amazon. It is an amazing book!

P.S. Mr. Martin you are reading this and laughing at my ignorance. I still would do just about anything to get a shot at auditioning for Hodor. That is unless you know another 7'1" GRRM admirer out there.

There was no 2008 calendar. The 2009 calendar was the first -- and so far only -- one we've done.

I believe it still may be possible to order one from DBPro. But as you know, there have been major delivery problems. Some people get their items quickly, with no problems. Others tell me they are still waiting a year or more after paying their money. So... how lucky are you feeling?

Well, judging by the artwork I've seen it'd be worth the wait, and buying one calendar makes more sense than paying for individual prints, so i guess if DB is still distributing them I'll order it up! Thanks!

I hope that if you DO do a calendar, you still go with the artists and not photos from the show.

My mother always had (and still does!) a Tolkien calendar for every year, and I was quite excited to have my own version of this. Sadly I missed out on 2009, but the potential for 2011 makes me happy.

Well, you do have some fantastic fan artwork that has been sent your way. Is it possible that you could have a fan artwork calender, as a collection of artist. If you could find a publisher it would take no time to get all the artwork together for a calender.:)

I am not sorry to hear that there won't be another DB calendar. My 2009 calendar still has not arrived even though I ordered (and paid!) rather early. None of my numerous inquiries by phone and email has been answered. To hear that I am probably not the only one still waiting does not make the situation any better.

I sincerely hope for a more professional publisher next time. And although I would have personal preferences regarding the artist, for example, I would frankly be happy about any calender that will be properly delivered at all.

That's great to hear that you're doing more calendars. I had many problems with DB but the quality of the calendar was undeniable. For '10 calendar I would personally prefer more painted art instead of photoshoots, say from the HBO series. Thanks for looking after your fans, George!
