Goodbye and Good Luck, David

David Tyree has been released by the Giants.

It was no surprise. He had a bad camp, and the Giants are heavily stocked with young receivers... but even so, it is sad to see him go. Tyree was always a lion on special teams, and whenever he did get into a game as a wide receiver, he exceeded expectations. He was never as gifted as Plaxico or Randy Moss or TO or the like, but he had more heart than any of them.

And of course he will live forever in the hearts of every Giants fan.

Some other team will pick him up, no doubt. I wish him luck, wherever he ends up.

Wow,I remember that.

Tyree isn't just remembered fondly by Giants fans, but by anyone who rooted hard against the Patriots trying to complete that perfect season. The '72 Dolphins may love him best of all.

And here we go, another football season looming. Ser Martin has two beloved football teams, both with more than a little hope for some wins this season.

Some of us, the unfortunate ones, have the Rams.

At least next draft's quarterback crop looks good.

Unfortunately, the Deadskins will probably suck harder than whoever this year... only to botch up the Draft next year.

Give Spags a few years, he'll turn it around. He's a terrific coach. The Giants will miss him this year.

...and he has the whole league using Magic Spray on their helmets. Let's hope that the team chemistry is good. Tom and Jerry are character oriented guys so the team may not suffer for losing that.

Tyree will land a job elsewhere, hopefully to a team not on the Gints schedule.

I am the last of the giants, my peolpe are gone from the earth...

*salute* Fare thee well, Velcro Helmet Warrior.

Is a 'camp' some obscure term of anatomy in the context of whichever sport this is?

Camp = practice.

Giants = football.
Sep. 8th, 2009 03:27 am (UTC)
Put them together and he had a bad camp and was beat out for a Wide Receiver position by younger guys who just played better. There is a set limit of 53 players on a team. Most teams only have 4 or 5 wide receivers. While his catch 2 years ago was amazing, the giants need someone with more than upside than just one catch.

For a moment I thought this was about casting Hodor!

(I'm Australian, forgive me!)

OSU Beavers find smashing success in early season
The seemingly tranquil and idyllic pastures and mountains of Oregon have been cleaved asunder by early season college football upsets.

Yes, i'm more of a college Ball guy myself, and it is with utter dismay that i report that University of Oregon Duck quarterback whats his face has been banned for whole season for unsporstmanlike conduct.

Oh, it's a sad day in the kingdom of Eugene, Oregon...especially when their team performed so boorishly and ineptly that people are seriously reconsidering their continued presence in the PAC-10.

However, the Entire State of Oregon has found new, refreshed hopes in Oregon State University Beavers' 34-7 respectful, sporstmanlike game versus Portland States University's Vikings.

The Beavers perhaps have some hope this season after repeatedly getting the toughest PAC-10 schedules known to man in hopes of reaching the Rose Bowl.

It is not an issue that there is no final decided college Bowl Game Showdown-The BCS seems a chaotic cash grab to this fan/author, but if any one team should make it through to the BCS Rose Bowl Finals-it will surely be the sporstmanlike and gracious winners Oregon State Beavers...

Let's Go Beavers!

May he never have to pay for another beer in New York!

Come to Denver, Tyree! I think your heart is just enough to cancel out 'Baby T.O.' Brandon Marshall's constant squabbling.

I'm guessing he'll go to New England and have a fantastic, pro-bowl quality year (And I think I'm only slightly exaggerating)
Sep. 6th, 2009 09:22 pm (UTC)
The gods of football need to have mercy on the Bucs and give him to us...where he can languish in a 4-12 season as we "rebuild."

Sep. 6th, 2009 10:19 pm (UTC)
I'm not sure he even will end up on another team. The injuries he has sustained in his career usually spells game over for receivers in the NFL. I think the only reason he lasted on their team as long as he did was because he was a local hero. It was a small favor afforded to him for that amazing moment (along with his other contributions)

It is indeed a sad day. I remember watching that catch, over and over, and being amazed every time. Just an incredible play.

This might be odd, but is there any way we could have a side character named Tyree? He could be famous for his ornate helmet.
Sep. 6th, 2009 11:20 pm (UTC)
Even a Pats fan (me) can recognize his place in Giants history. Best of luck to him.

Now if the G-men would dump Hixon, the rest of the league could breathe a little easier! >;-} NY looks good!
Sep. 7th, 2009 01:16 am (UTC)
Yep, the word is my Chiefs are looking at him, mostly because of his acumen for special teams. (We've stunk it up on ST the last two years.)
Sep. 7th, 2009 05:03 am (UTC)
That whole play, not just the Tyree miracle catch, is probably the best play ever in the Superbowl. The "immaculate reception" has nothing on this play! I think everyone on earth (except Eli Manning) thought he would be sacked for a huge loss, and the Pats were going to worm their way to a perfect season despite being outplayed the entire game. I'm not normally a Giants fan, but I tend to root for the underdog if one of my teams isn't there. The Giants will be fine though. Hixon is stepping up, and Hakim Nicks has superstar potential. If Steve Smith remembers how to catch the football, they'll have a pretty good passing attack along with their TE Boss.

we'll take him. we're missing a first round pick. Check this our George....cracks me up. Hitler on Crabtree's holdout.

If you like that catch...
...you would *love* Australian rules football.
Sep. 7th, 2009 12:07 pm (UTC)
That was an amazing play. I hope Tyree gets a good job somewhere else (but preferably not the Cowboys).
Sep. 7th, 2009 12:11 pm (UTC)

May I introduce you to the wonderful aerial acrobatics of Australian Rules Football, where it is not uncommon to see a player, protected by nothing but a jersey, pair of shorts, socks and boots soar to incredible heights to catch the ball, called a 'mark' in AFL parlance. If the video does not appear here, type in 'best afl marks' to youtube and savour. Well worth it, I assure you.

Excelsior, David!
Sep. 7th, 2009 02:06 pm (UTC)
it would be great if George would write a new contemporary fantasy novel or novella.
maybe with the title"the folks of ice and football league"
Sep. 7th, 2009 04:00 pm (UTC)
You're right he will be picked up by another team, and soon I bet. That catch (over Rodney Harrison,) was truly a thing of beauty.

I'm pissed off at Shawne Merriman's dumb a$$ for getting arrested late Saturday night for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend. When are these guys gonna get it? Stop hanging out all night at nightclubs, getting smashed, and getting arrested. This is the last thing we need one week before the start of the season. I just hope this doesn't drag on and distract Shawne too much.
Sep. 8th, 2009 02:31 pm (UTC)
I don't think Merriman's gonna be having much of a season after that arrest. Sigh.
Sep. 7th, 2009 04:11 pm (UTC)
I'm hoping he ends up on the Rams, so he can play for Steve Spagnuolo.
Sep. 7th, 2009 05:43 pm (UTC)
I'd take him in a heartbeat. Who do we have now? Nobody.

The Greatest Show on Turf is dead.
Sep. 7th, 2009 07:26 pm (UTC)
Sad day indeed! That was one of the prettiest catches I've ever seen. Here... have a kleenex.
Sep. 8th, 2009 04:59 pm (UTC)
Eli & Tyree
Eli is remembered as the hero of that drive. But he threw 3 should-have-been interceptions that the Pats just dropped. imho, Tyree saved the day and should be remembered as the hero. If he didn't make this better-than-Swan catch, we'd all be speaking with New England accents.

Sep. 8th, 2009 10:50 pm (UTC)
As a life long Cowboys fan, I am going to warn you about Chris Canty. He is a good player, but will continuously frustrate Giants fans by flashing brilliance and then disappearing for 2 games. You guys way overpaid for him.
Sep. 8th, 2009 11:08 pm (UTC)
love your books can't wait for the rest
Mr. Martin I really enjoy your ice and fire series. I'll be rereading them every few years now for the rest of my life, thank you very much !!I was wondering about your thoughts on a couple of other series of books from 2 different authors (1) The Reality Dysfunction by Peter Hamilton (Almost as good as you , IMO) awesome sci-fi series and (2) Aztec series by Gary Jennings historical fiction , both very good reads. If you ever have time give them a try, you wont be dissapointed. Keep up the amazing story telling !!

Like a one hit wonder
Instead of song - Tyree is like a one hit wonder of the NFL. That incredible play will be remembered for years to come.

David Tyree
Hopefully he will come to my Baltimore Ravens. We need all the help at receiver that we can get.
