Riders Wanted

Ever since HBO first took out an option on A GAME OF THRONES -- even before we got an actual production order -- I've been getting emails from readers who desperately wanted to be a part of the production. "I'll do anything!" some of you have written. ((Really, don't say stuff like that. Really. Don't.))

Well, now's your chance. The call has gone out for extras. Details here:

Of course, you need to be in Northern Ireland, or get yourself to Northern Ireland. They're shooting this mostly in Belfast and environs.

And it would help to know horses. As you can see, their biggest need right now is for experienced male riders. (I imagine they could use some female riders too, though maybe not as many. And if not, hey, that's why they invented false beards.)

But I'm in Santa Fe, so I'm not the guy to write to about this. Inquire as above.

And good luck. Maybe I'll be meeting some of Belfast, a month from now.

Gaaaah! How much do I wish I still had my horse and lived in Northern Ireland and was could dress up convincingly as a guy.

I am pretty close to Northern Ireland, a 5-hour bus ride away, but last time I rode a horse was 14 years ago, and I am female anyway and they need male riders :(

Good luck to the male horse riders from Northern Ireland though. :D

You know the guy in Monty Python and the Holy Grail who appears briefly in the "We're knights of the Round Table" song, in prison hanging from a wall and trying to clap along? He was a fan who showed up on set and said "I'll do anything." So they had him do that.

Be careful what you ask for.

Dear George Martin !
I'm Russian, so excuse my English.
You are my favorite writer. Several times I read "Tuf Voyaging" and now I read the "A Song of Ice and Fire". I am happy that I can not express how I like it and I wish you health, luck and the realization of all of your ideas.

I'll see you in Belfast :)

Though, you know, not on a horse.

OH MAN! If I wasn't expecting a little one and my hubby's job wasn't insane you bet I'd hop on a plane and get my butt there! And I live in Southern California! Good luck and wishes of fun to those who can make it there :D

"'I'll do anything!' some of you have written. ((Really, don't say stuff like that. Really. Don't.))"

Heh, that's funny. I've seen people do that in Hollywood - gorgeous young actresses begging my boss to take them on as his client...I agree, it's not a good thing. Fortunately for them, my boss at the time was actually one of those rare honorable people out there you hear so little about. The kind who doesn't take advantage of the misguided and tries to give them good advice. Really, not kidding. Saw it on too many occasions.

their biggest need right now is for experienced male riders.

As the one who wrote all those scenes involving the marshaling of bannermen, this is clearly your fault.

Ah, if only :)

I just popped this onto my Facebook, I went to Trinity College Dublin, so I know a few Irish riders, will do my best to spread the word.

Let us know if they ever do any filming in New Mexico! (You never know, it could happen) >.>
Sep. 30th, 2009 07:10 pm (UTC)
And northern regions of Russia also. :)

No Irish people here?!!? What's going on?!
I am a woman, very petite and very.. polish:) So I cant be a part of this:(((
But if I could, I would fly to Belfast and ride a horse with great pleasure..:))

Oh. OH OH. Yes. I will apply :) Gives me an excuse to have a bit of a holiday, too!

Hah! I grew up riding horses, have been to Ireland several times to visit family, can grow a decent beard and at 6’1” would probably fit in. I just can’t take off from work with such short notice.

Thank you for sharing this though. I am already planning on buying the pilot when it comes out on DVD.

Lifelong horseman. Check.
16-60. Check.
Male. ((double-checking, but pretty sure)). Check.
Can ditch school for 3 weeks to go to Northern Ireland to shoot a movie... Dammit.
Sep. 30th, 2009 07:21 pm (UTC)
If only a few years ago...
I dont think I can get away from school and family now but I'd have loved this a few years ago!
Sep. 30th, 2009 07:41 pm (UTC)
Now if they only filmed in Texas... my husband already has quite the medieval look going on, what with his hair longer than mine and his serious, grizzled face (when he doesn't shave). Blast!

Conversation that just happened at my house
Me: Honey!?
Her from another room: Yeah?
Me: You know that trip you always wanted to take to Ireland? Why don't we go.
Her: But you said before we can't really afford it!
me: Yeah, but I changed my mind, and I found some really nice flights to Belfast in November.
her: November? WHy the hell would I want to go in November.
Me: Oh, You know, its less touristy then, things are probably cheaper...
Her: let me think on it!

Re: Conversation that just happened at my house

Mine was slightly similar
Me: Honey? Remember when you went to Egypt for a grad school class and I stayed home to work?
Honey: Yes.
Me: Well, since I've been laid off, I have time and they need riders in NI.
Honey: For what?
Me: The GoT HBO pilot
Honey: And leave me with the kids? Right...

I know how to ride horses and how to take care of them (I am studying Vet Medicine) but I am a female T__T
Sep. 30th, 2009 07:50 pm (UTC)
"I'll do anything!" some of you have written. ((Really, don't say stuff like that. Really. Don't.))

Given the number of horses (and probably other livestock as well) involved in this project, this is sound advice.

Female riders, don't be discouraged! Many of the Riders of Rohan in Peter Jackson's LOTR were female - they couldn't find enough men to fill the saddles.
Sep. 30th, 2009 09:23 pm (UTC)
The women don't even need fake beards, just helmets with faceplates and well-padded armor! I so wish I could go *sigh*.

Total side-note: I just finished listening to the series (again) on audiobook and I just want to say I love you. The more times I read this series the more I fall in love with it.
Sep. 30th, 2009 09:31 pm (UTC)
Oh man! Now I HAVE to go to Ireland. I may not be a guy, but I'm sure with makeup and extra hair I can fake it, especially because no one's going to be looking at me.
Sep. 30th, 2009 09:45 pm (UTC)

Not in Ireland, and not a man.

But I am a confident and experienced rider...

Hmm... *looks up flights from Toronto*
Sep. 30th, 2009 10:43 pm (UTC)
Man I wish I was in Ireland.... *sigh*
Sep. 30th, 2009 10:47 pm (UTC)
Ah!!!!!! I live in Belfast and i'm a mad fan of these books, but i don't own a horse. Not sure if i could ride one either. I could play a dead guy pretty well....
