HBO Options A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE

Yes, it's true.

Yes, this is the Big News that I have been hinting at.

No, the Big News was not the pizza crawl, or the delivery of the new WILD CARDS book, though of course I'm excited about those as well.

VARIETY broke the story this morning. Instead of rehashing what they said, let me just point all of you toward:

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117957532.html?categoryid=14&cs=1

I've already gotten close to a hundred emails this morning, just off the VARIETY article. I expect that number will have swollen to several hundred before the day is out. I appreciate all the good wishes and congratulations, but I am NOT going to be able to respond to all of you individually.

I will be making my own announcement on my news page, of course, and that may answer some of your questions, but I haven't actually written it yet, so please be patient.

I appreciate all the casting suggestions too, but guys, you're getting way way WAY ahead of yourselves. Developing a television series is a long and time-consuming process, and we're just getting started here. We only closed the deal a couple of days ago.

I will do my best to keep everyone informed as the project progresses, but this is not something you will be telling TIVO to record next week.

This might be a great time to subscribe to HBO, however. Regardless of what happens with A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, HBO still has the best shows on television, shows like DEADWOOD, THE WIRE, and THE SOPRANOS that stand head and shoulders above anything on the networks. The second season of ROME just started last Sunday, and it's fabulous; the look of it, the writing, the directing, the acting, all of it is first rate. That's why I have been saying for years that HBO was the perfect place for A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE.

Is there going to be any chance of it coming over to England?

That is not the question to ask. The correct question is "can we make sure the channel that buys the rights understands not to cut it to damn ribbons and broadcast it in a kids slot".

Sorry. Will calm down now. If it's a success, we'll get it. It'll be a success. We'll get it.

I think I just died a little. That is the best news I have ever heard. Now how do you keep them from ruining it like Fantastic Four?

You keep Tim Story far away from it.

Along with Jon Peters, Michael Bay, and, oh, about 152,000 other idiots.

I saw that this afternoon, and I couldn't believe what my eyes were saying: HBO, and A Song of Ice and Fire? Oh, gosh. It's been a long time since I was so excited about a show [not entirely true though: I was very excited with the two episodes show of the Hogfather, but that's it: it was only for two episodes, even if it was GREAT].
HBO is known for the quality of its series. So I have great hopes for a Son of Ice and Fire. I'm pretty sure though that they may have a hard time with some scenes [Arya killing at 9, Dany getting married at 12, etc]. We'll see how they pull that out :)
I can't suscribe to HBO, but I'll be looking towards the serie when it'll come to France [I'm sure it will: it has to; or else, I'll have to pay loads to see the serie in DVD lol].

I'm happy to wait a little while longer for a television adaptation. Firstly it gives me time to brush up on my acting skills ;) Secondly waiting is better than expecting nothing coming at all. Congrats on the big deal!!

I know the names are too big budget, but a bunch of us over at the Song of Ice and Fire board have been casting the movie/miniseries for awhile now. I made a site to show the ideas we have and I figured it couldn't hurt to link it here. Just in case you wanted to use one of them. :P

And again, this is awesome news!

That list is fun - lists like that are always kind of silly, but there are a few I'd love to see. The one for Melisandre though... that is freaking hilarious, with the "Complete Moisture Plus" caption.

Hell YEAH! Between this and the Preacher show in development based on the Garth Ennis series, HBO is THE network to beat for the next few years. I can't imagine a better way for this series to be adapted! Wonderful wonderful news!!
