Jetlagged in Scotland

  • Oct. 24th, 2009 at 2:30 AM
scotland
We're here in Edinburgh, safe and sound but jetlagged. A grueling trip, three flights, Albuquerque to Houston, Houston to Newark, Newark to Edinburgh. I can't sleep on airplanes, so as usual I arrived exhausted, and collapsed as soon as we hit the hotel. Sleep until midnight, then woke, ate a room service meal, and will soon go back to sleep in hopes to waking tomorrow and getting into sync with the time here.

Glad to see so much enthusiasm about the cast.

Gnight again.

Ooof, long flight(s). I once flew L.A. to Venice, via Amsterdam for a friend's wedding...not fun, not fun at all. At least I had "Clash of Kings" to read on the way and back (it was the first time I read it, actually).

Now if they only can get Peter O'Toole to play Lord Walder Frey, heh!

If your busy schedule permits, visit the British Museum, that is if you haven't before. Or as I like to call it the big building of British war trophies. You won't regret it. As an American archaeologist I found it very humbling.

George'll be in London on the 11th, though. He's doing a lot of travelling in the U.K. this next couple of weeks. :)

*ahem*
The man is in Scotland, not England. :)

I do strongly urge a visit to... oh, there are too many to choose from but if I could choose only one it would be St. Giles' Cathedral where the great Montrose's mutilated body was interred and he has a magnificent monument.

Enthusiasm about the cast? Done. Enjoy your time elsewhere, sir. No pressure, but we love your characters more than movie characters. Been with ya since the late 80s with Beauty an th' B. I was 5 at the time... but I was there.

Well, I've been reading your not-a-blog for longer than I can remember, and decided upon reading this post to finally sign up to livejournal so I could reply to it:
Thanks George.
Thanks for your life consuming literature...My baby steps into fantasy I owe to Lloyd Alexander, but my passion and addiction to the genre, I blame utterly on opening A Game of Thrones at 15.
Now I'd rather refresh the comments page over on Winter-is-Coming to discuss name pronunciations with my fellow addicts than touch my grad school research.

Enjoy the set, watching your mind come to life in front of you, and please pass on to those actors that we are over the wall excited to see them bring A Song of Ice and Fire to HBO's unsuspecting viewers.

ps. Will you give Richard Madden my number? ;)

I can't sleep on flights either. So imagine my flight from Philadelphia to San Francisco to Seoul, South Korea. 17 hours of flying, plus probably about 7 hours of waiting other travel time before I could sleep. 24 hours of being awake! ahhh!!! I feel your pain. And the jet lag just makes it weird for a long time too. Everyone is enthusiastic about the cast and the pilot. How couldn't we be?!

I have never been jetlagged and always put it down to not sleeping on planes and going to bed at a normal time for the timezone regardless of how much I have been awake.

I've been away from home for a bit, but I'll be back there this evening. Prod me via email if you want a local guide.

Re: WHAT?
Well, not exactly in Edinburgh, more like at the airport, and only to sleep.

Just now, we're up near Falkirk in a much nicer hotel.

feeling jet-lagged as well
well, just tired. stayed up thru most of last night reading the conclusion to Feast for Crows. Now have re-read the four books twice since FfC came out in hardcover. Hoping I don't have time to read thru the four again before the 5th book shows up.....but again, waiting patiently. I did get a chuckle out of reading GRRM's optimistic "Meanwhile, Back on the Wall" comments at the end of book 4... :-)

Excited
I'm excited since today is the first day of filming for GoT. I look forward to the many nights of hanging out waiting for the show to start, last time I did that was with BSG and to think GoT is going to be about 4 times as good :). Keep them squared away with your IP George! I'm looking forward to this series more then anything that I can remember.

Scotland
Welcome. Hope it doesn't rain too much. I've never actually been on a plane before so I can't possibly know what it's like to be jetlagged but I can imagine it'd be tough - especially on a long flight.

I think that Scotland is one of the perfect locations for Winterfell and some of the castles up North might be ideal for the Eyrie. If you are near Falkirk, make sure to see Wallace Monument and Stirling Castle. I see both almost everyday on my way to university.

No one cleared this with me... ;)

Are you doing any events? I mean you know while you're in the Capital city of Scotland, you want to maybe sign a few books for the loyal fanbase before you bugger off to Ireland?

Great cast - have fun in Dublin
As a brit I recognise lots of the cast and you've got some really good actors in on this - can't wait to see it. Having watched lots of the Stargate Atlantis episodes Jason Momoa is a brilliant choice for Khal Drogo.

I'm sad I can't make it to either the signings in Dublin or London but being based up in the north its too expensive as I'm not working right now - thinking about planning to go the con in Ireland in 2010

I can see why they chose to film in Ireland - hope you have a relaxing time while you're there

Traveling
If you have a layover in Houston on your way back could you think about doing a meet and greet at one of the local bookstores? All of your appearances seem to be overseas or at Convention well away from Texas. I know you didn't like the last President we sent, but hey we love to read too! Besides we have great sports stadiums and you owe Houston Fans one for that humiliating loss the Texans took in Week 1.

That's entertainment
It's good to see you safe and well. Flying is a pain (I can never sleep on planes).
Whilst you are in Edinburgh a trip to the castle and up Arthur's Seat I think will provide a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Mind you, Edinburgh is such a beautiful city walking around and looking at the Georgian architecture is enough to satisfy I've found.
Hope the trip is a good one! Keep up the excellent work. Looking forward to the series!
