Giants D

Various sources are reporting the Pepper Johnson might be a candidate for the defensive coordinator opening on the Giants, created when Bill Sheridan was released.

That would be a risk, maybe -- Pepper doesn't have the experience of most of the other candidates -- but it's one I'd be glad to take. I have fond memories of Pepper from his days in the Giants defense of the late 80s and early 90s. He was always a fiery competition, a real leader, and the Giants defense desperately needs some fire right now. The last thing we want is another Xs and Os guy like Sheridan. Pepper has never been a coordinator... but neither had Steve Spagnuolo until Coughlin hired him, and Spags was great.

Other reported contenders include Dick Jauron, Romeo Crennel, Percy Fewell, Bob Sutton, and George Edwards. Some of them might be okay... but if it was me, I'd go for Pepper.

Defensive Coordinator
Tyrion would make a great defensive coordinator. The opposing team may take a few casualties though...

Great name anyway :)
I know it isn't always indicative of success... and I know almost nothing about any of the possibles for defensive coordinator.

But c'mon, Pepper Johnson is a GREAT name.

Seriously, doesn't that just sound like someone you want in charge of your defense? Much better than Kit Snigzoggle, or whatever, you need power in your NFL names.

And remember...

If we play perfect offense, we may win.
If we play perfect defense, we will never lose.

Jim Zorn hadn't been a coordinator either...
Though yes, there is a big difference between def. coordibator and head coach. Where has Pepper coached and for whom? Spags learned from the GREAT Jim Johnson so he really was primed and ready for the coordinator's job.

Percy Fewell seems to be a hot commodity. They are talking about him in Chicago. Also I hear Romeo may be going to KC To re-join Scott Pioli.

Pepper has been coaching for Evil Little Bill and the Patriots. Linebackers coach, I believe.

Re: Jim Zorn hadn't been a coordinator either...
He was the assistant linebackers coach for a few years and then became the defensive line coach, which is the position he holds today.

Re: Jim Zorn hadn't been a coordinator either...
Being a Patriot fan, I would say I have loved having Pepper Johnson on the Patriots staff and would be sorry to see him go. In addition to being a linebacker's coach he has also been our Defensive Line coach at least for the past two years.

Its one of those things where sometimes you say really good players don't make good coaches, but I think that really only applies to those just naturally gifted athletes. Johnson was a blue collar type player. He worked hard at everything and for everything he ever got as a player.

Re: Jim Zorn hadn't been a coordinator either...
Hmmm, well yeah that's a pretty good resume learning from Belichick. And of course Pepper would command the utmost respect from the players, something that I hear was lacking in the defesnve part of the locker room for the D-coordinator.

Any houghts on the Shannahan hiring? No doubt he can coach them up. I'm just interested in whether Big Boy Daniel Snyder will actually let him coach and select all the players.

Re: Jim Zorn hadn't been a coordinator either...
Right you are. He's been with Bill for a very long time. As a player he went with him to Cleveland from the Giants. He later re-joined him with the Jets and has been a coach for Bill since 2000. He's worked with the Pat's linebackers and D-line.

Working with "Evil Little Bill" means he has a video camera and isn't afraid to use it.

Off-topic, but...
Judging Jim Zorn by what happened in Washington isn't exactly fair, for anyone in any position. See also Norv Turner; Marty Schottenheimer.

Spagnuolo had been a defensive coordinator for three different teams before the Giants hired him - just not in the NFL. (UConn, U of Maine and Frankfort in NFL Europe.)

Don't sleep on Perry Fewell who did a lot with very little for the Bills.

Patriots Inside Linebacker coach 2001-2004, Defensive Line coach 2004-present. I'll take him if Tyrion's not available...

Pepper is an awesome coach, George, but not a competent strategist.

Has he been responsible for the Pat's gameday stategy? Each of the groups he's coached seems to have performed well. But, there is the one mark against hiring him. We don't know what his schemes will be nor if his play calling is any good.

Pepper probably would be a good coordinator; he was a smart player, and that often translates.

Mike Waufel, the D-line couch for the Giants, just got canned too ...

fair to bill sheridan...
There were only 2 starters from the 2007 superbowl who started in the last 2 games. Turnover and tons of injuries. Umenyora is not the same guy. He seems to be done as a premier player and probably done as a giant. There entire secondary was decimated by injuries all year. When you have 3rd stringers starting your not going to stop people.

That being said Sheridan needs to go. Jerry Reese made great moves his first 2 years, but he brought in some stiffs this year (CC Brown and Rocky Bernard). Lets hope he improves. This years draft does not appear to be very good other than Nicks either. We will see if Sintim and Barden do anything next year. They barely played this year.

This is going to be a VERY interesting off season with no salary cap. This really means tons of guys with big signing bonuses will be cut, since this won't hurt the cap.

Looks like Fewell is the guy
Reports are that the G-Men are going to hire percy Fewell as their DC. I think it's a good hire. He's been a hot commodity around the lague. The Bears were said to be very interested in him but I don't think any good coach in his right mind will go coach the Bears D. Lovie only wants to run his rigid Tampa 2 and Lovie is probably going to be fired next year unless the Bears make a miraculous turnaround.
