Gang Green

So the Jets went to Cincinnati to play the Bengals in the first round of the playoffs. This time no one was lying down, Cincinnati had all its starters and played hard.

What can I say? Only this

The kid quarterback came through, the running game kicked ass, and the Gang Green defense hung tough. They gave up way too many yards to Cedric Benson, but made Carson Palmer look like the rookie, not Sanchez. And Revis shut down Ochocinco once again, despite the refs helping out Ocho with several truly bogus calls against Darrell.

Next week will be much tougher. I'll just savor this one for a while.

The evening game... well, that was distressing. Philadelphia let down the Green Team badly. How can the Eagles play so well against my Giants whenever they meet, and stink up the place against the hated Cowboys three times in the same season???

Dallas looked unstoppable. But they are still evil. The sight of Jerry Jones laughing and grinning and slapping high-fives with W almost made me gag. The worst owner in sports and the worst president in my lifetime yukking it up.

Sigh. Well, there are still a lot of games to play...

Go Eagles!
Oh wait. Well how about go Eagles in 2010/11!! Good luck to your Jets but I doubt they will make past the next 2 games. I hope they put up a fight though. As long as Dallas and New England lose I will be happy. Good luck to your Jets.

Re: Go Eagles!
If anyone can improve the team it's Andy Reid. However, you better hope you can get a replacement for Westbrook or that he's 100% healthy for at least the second half of next season.

Only for you would I support the Jets in a game! Second game was pretty shocking: horrible embarrassment in a playoff game, and to the arrogant Cowboys as well *sigh*

Assume you saw the clip of Sanchez snarking at Pete Carroll :->

Jerry and W: Eviler and Eviler
lol, even I shuddered at that sight!

Oh but finally a playoff win. Now I don't have to hear that everytime someone talks about the Cowboys. sweet, sweet win.

Congrats to the Jets. They got some toung talent on offense. The future looks bright.

Wouldn't that be "Dumb" and "Dumberer?" Old W offering conflatuations on a great victoriousness for the country and the great state of Texas!

I as a Giants fan was happy to see Philly lose. I would rather see Dallas win another title than Philly its first. Of course, now that Philly is out the team I least want to win the Super Bowl is Dallas ...
Jan. 10th, 2010 06:05 am (UTC)
Since whenever I watch a game and cheer for a team, that team loses, I watched that game and cheered for the Bengals! My husband thought it was hilarious and said "You just want the Jets to win for George R.R. Martin." And I screamed "Go Bengals! You can still win it!"
Jan. 10th, 2010 06:07 am (UTC)
Definitely not a Dallas fan myself, but why is he the worst owner in sports? I think Steinbrenner holds that honor, as he has completely ruined baseball with his stupidly high free agent bidding.

I don't watch the NFL. Until Jerry Jones is dead.

And what about Carter? And Nixon? I might give W a tie for second worst in your lifetime.
Jan. 10th, 2010 09:18 pm (UTC)
Nixon got caught doing stuff that probably has happened inumerable times. Not that he should be excused; but for a Republican, Nixon was actually fairly moderate. He even supported the Negative Income Tax, against the party line. Carter would have made a first-class Secretary of State, but really wasn't cut out to handle the stress of being President. Neither were good, but don't approach the level of depraved ignorance of the Bush Administration. No other President since John Adams has passed laws undermining our Constitutional and civil rights. The Bush team ran the country like a mafia, with a level of corruption previously unseen. The m.o. of the Bush/Cheney/Rove playbook was cronyism, kickbacks, back-room deals, fabricating evidence when necessary and destroying the paper trail if caught. Burning a federal agents cover in retalliation for blowing the whistle. Forcing Colin Powell to lie to Congress and then making him the scapegoat for the Iraq WMD quagmire. Lying to the American people on nearly a daily basis. Manipulating everyone with weapons of mass distraction; through fearmongering and artificial "threat levels," in order to keep up public opinion on their wars of agression in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sacrificing our troops without clear objectives or a reasonable exit strategy. The original goal of capturing (or killing) Osama Bin Laden has become an afterthought. Bin Laden has become the Goldstein character from Orwell's "1984." He's only used for the American version of the "Two Minutes Hate." Meanwhile, at home, Bush was busy handing out millions to the rich in tax breaks while the economy started to decline. In response to the decline, the rich got more millions and socked it away, while the economic decline spiraled into the worst recession since the Great Depression. Racial profiling, wiretaps, torture, etc., etc., etc.
George W. Bush ranks right up there with Josef Stalin and Adolf Hitler on the list of worst world leaders in history.

Yeah, Right
The Cowboys dominated the Eagles. up 24-7 at the half. Please. If you want to be accurate, the Cowboys won AND the Eagles lost.

The Cowboys are trying to find the Ring and bring it back to their master in Mordor.

I, for one, hope that Vikings are what will stop them.

Happy for your Jets, but sorry, I've been pulling against the Eagles all year and if woulda been pulling for *anyone* against them. I'm a very happy camper right now.

No offense, but Mr. Vick has paid for his crimes. Yes, what he did was despicable, but it's over now. You don't have to like him, but why not give him a chance to redeem himself?

I am torn, Sir Martin. I admire you and your blog greatly, yet the blog of the writer Robin Hobb haunts my thoughts whenever I read yours. However to reconcile the two? All the best for 2010!

Worst owner?!?! hah!
I had to create an account here just for this post. JJ the worst owner in sports? I admittedly am and always will be a Cowboy, but this is the most ridiculously biased statement I have heard from you! I don't claim JJ to be the end all be all, but many teams in any sport would be lucky to have him. He cares greatly about the sport and team(too much sometimes), and does everything in his power to compete. New York has an owner named Steinbrenner and you throw stones at JJ? I won't rant, but there are many owners a million time worse than JJ. Would you rather have one Al Davis?

I have all the respect in the world for you George, but face it, the Giants just weren't good this year. Great start, but a very mediocre season when said and done. My 'Boys finally seem to be "peaking" at the right time this year and it is honestly a little bittersweet to me. I can never wish them to do badly, but I'm not crazy about Wade either. I could talk football with you forever so I am going to cut myself off here for now.

Love your books just not your football affiliations. Keep up the good work and good lock on The Knot!

Re: Worst owner?!?! hah!
Obviously Jerry Jones is not literally the worst owner in sport. I don't think that George was making that statement as a fact. I liken it to how he calls Bill Belichick "Evil Little Bill."

I think of Jerry Jones as a cross between Eddie DiBartolo and Al Davis. Hmmm, maybe he is the current worst owner in the NFL.

Revis's lament
"Okay, I've got (Bengals receiver X) well covered. It's past 5 yards, so I'm going to give him a little cushion, but less than 4-5 yards. I don't want to get an illegal contact penalty."

(Bengals receiver proceeds to run directly into Revis, creating contact but makes a poor attempt on the actual ball in play)

REFEREE: Illegal contact.

Only second time seeing Revis play this season and very impressive. But, seriously, WTF was up with those two calls? One was so blatantly offensive pass interference that it almost defied reason. I was watching as a Colts fan, so I suppose more biased than a casual observer... but, come on, man.

I agree, you're not just a rabid Jets fan; those calls seemed weak. I figure it was just a Harrison Bergeron penalty levelled against Revis partly for dismantling Ochocinco's hype machine; nothing new for Revis to shut down a top WR. But in such embarrasing fashion, on such a big stage, at home, against such a flamboyant personality... all the more impressive.

Blessed is the mind too ignorant to question. The righteousness of the Cowboys is now the shining force of the universe, and wretched specimens like the Eagles are not worthy to stain the annals of football history with their heresies.

"The worst owner in sports and the worst president in my lifetime yukking it up."

How did Dallas get so lucky?

Impressed with Sanchez the last two weeks. Hopefully the Ravens will win today and if AZ beats Green Bay it will almost make up for Dallas winning.

Hoping things are different next week in Minnesota for the smug goofballs... Jerry and George. There's a pair that deserve each other.
Jan. 10th, 2010 03:30 pm (UTC)
Man, the Jets look pretty damn good...I'm impressed, and Revis is a stud. Everytime the ball was snapped he was all over Ochostinko-never allowing him any seperation at all, and you're right about that pass interfernce call, if anything I thought it was offensive pi.

There's something about Jerry!
That makes you want to tell him to shut up.
Jan. 10th, 2010 03:38 pm (UTC)
Jerry is indeed the worst ever, but don't worry. They will not make it past my Saints. If the almighty Favre can't take care of it, they will visit the Dome, where there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Jan. 10th, 2010 03:48 pm (UTC)
Bengals threw it away
I'm not a big fan of the AFC but as it was the last regular season game of the season and I had it on my Sky+ (the UK's version of Tivo) I watched the Bengals at Jets in week 17 and thought that although the Bengals were arguably a better team throughout the season their performance, or lack of it, in the regular season game meant they were never going to win the game against the Jets in the playoffs. I don't agree with letting a team win in week 17 because you don't need to win. I would have fancied the bengals over the Texans but after the display in week 17 the Jets were nailed on to win the Wildcard game. Sorry to say that they will be going no further however. Also my Vikings have a hard game in the Divisional round. Trust Romo to find his playoff feet when the Vikings finally have a push for the playoffs. Packers at Vikings for the NFC title anyone. Even Brett Favre couldn't have dreamed that at the begining of the season. Lets see.
Jan. 10th, 2010 04:42 pm (UTC)
Down with Dallas
I'm in agreement with you on the Cowboys. The fact the W is so buddy buddy with Jerry Jones makes me despise them even more (with the exception of Marion Barber who, in conjunction with Laurence Maroney, created one of the greatest Gopher running games of all time.) The good news about Dallas is that they have to face my Vikings next weekend. If our offensive line can hold off their blitz and give Favre some time, I think the Vikes have a chance to clean up Philly's mess. ...and of course Jared Allen sacking Romo a few times wouldn't hurt either.
Jan. 10th, 2010 09:50 pm (UTC)
Re: Down with Dallas
The Dallas/Minnesota game will be won by who has the best running game. If Adrian Peterson has a big day, the Vikes win. If Barber or Jones get hot, the Cowboys will win. I think too many people are counting out Arizona, who are playing at home. I'm picking the Cardinals in a close game over the pack.

Also...last I checked, the Pats were getting run over by the Ravens 33-14.

How can the Eagles play so well against my Giants whenever they meet, and stink up the place against the hated Cowboys three times in the same season???

As a Philadelphian, I hang my head in shame and grief. I dress myself in torn sackcloth and ashes. There is no joy - we will never be warm in winter again, nor cool in summer. The skies will never be blue, no birds shall sing. There is no joy.

There is no joy. Evil has won.
Jan. 10th, 2010 06:15 pm (UTC)
Technically, evil won when your team hired Michael Vick.

Jets Game
It was great to see the Jets FINISH the Bengals.
Shonn Greene did a great DANCE around their defense.
Chad Ochocinco left home WITHout his game.
The Begnals defense feet were DRAGON the entire game.
Jan. 10th, 2010 05:54 pm (UTC)
Worse owner?
Do you really believe that Jones is worth than Al Davis in Oakland? I may not approve of all that Jones has done but seeing Al Davis in Oakland year after year destroying a franchise is a travesty.

Glad you Jets did well though. They even had Fireman Ed on Shotime's INSIDE THE NFL the other day. Myself, being a Pats fan, am anxiously awaiting my own kick off. Hopefully we'll see a Jets-Pats rematch and have a good game.
Jan. 10th, 2010 05:59 pm (UTC)
Cowboys held the Evil Iggles to 40:03 time of possession and 93yards rushing. Those are combined numbers for the two games - last week and last night.

Bring on the Vikings! We're going to make Favre wish he had retired 2 years ago!
