Wolves in the Night

Saw the remake of THE WOLFMAN tonight. Great visuals, and Rick Baker's makeup was spectacular, as always (I much prefer the traditional 'wolfman' look of the old Universal classics, which Baker updates here, to the hydraulic-snout werewolves of AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, THE HOWLING, THE WOLFEN, etc). Overall, though, I'd give the movie a C, maybe a C+. Anthony Hopkins kind of phones in it, and Benicio del Toro is no Lon Chaney, Jr.

Speaking of things that go bump in the night, a new producer has been attached to my own werewolf movie-in-development, "The Skin Trade," according to CNN:

Meanwhile, March creeps ever closer, and with it the HBO decision about whether or not to greenlight the GAME OF THRONES series. I am pretty much out of the loop on this, so there's nothing I can do to impact it either way... but as much as I have tried to adopt a "que sera, sera" attitude, I'm growing increasingly anxious. All sorts of rumors swirling around the internet, both good and bad. And of course Hollywood has broken my heart before. Ask me politely and I'll show you my DOORWAYS scars...

Last but not least, there's Meereen. Can I just drop a hydrogen bomb on the damn place?

Sigh. Well, tomorrow is another day. At least when I'm in Westeros, I forget all about what may or may not be happening at HBO.

I have my fingers crossed with regards to the HBO series. I mean they're still churning out Legend of the Seeker and I far prefer A Song of Ice and Fire to Wizard's First Rule!

I want my Game of Thrones TV series dammit!

I can't believe how much people like Legend of the Seeker. Every time I turn it on I find it so bad I'm embarrassed for it.

Hell yes Skin Trade! ♥

Yes please bomb Meereen. /shot But good luck.
Feb. 19th, 2010 07:51 am (UTC)
So you're saying it's done!
Title for post isn't "Not done yet," therefore one can only assume ADWD has been completed.

But in serious news yes, I agree, you need to introduce the Hydrogen bomb to ASOIAF...as there's just no destruction quite like mutually assured destruction.

You could drop a dragon on them :D
Feb. 19th, 2010 07:54 am (UTC)
I was thinking that too! Dany does seem to be a pretty popular character, so making her and her dragons that much more awesome would be, well, awesome.

On a more serious note, I'll keep hoping things work out with the HBO series. Everything you've said so far makes it sound like it could be done quite well.

I think you're confusing Benicio Del Toro the actor (Usual Suspects, Wolfman)with Guillermo Del Toro the director (Hellboy, Blade II, Pan's Labyrinth).
Feb. 19th, 2010 07:59 am (UTC)
Ooops. Guilty as charged.

Better edit that, before I get another hundred corrections.

You can destroy Meereen if you want. We'll just demand a good reason and plot around it, though. X3

And, I know I want Game of Thrones to get the green light from HBO. It's going to be the one show I watch regularly, in theory. Yay.

I agree for the most part with your thoughts on the the Wolfman. Even though I do prefer the "hydraulic snout" werewolves to the classic ones, I still can see that the makeup is superb. Overall a pretty bad film (Benicio... Why?).

I personally do not care much for the Legend of the Seeker (like the other poster says kind of). I read the first four books in that series and nearly died of boredom and rubbish on the fourth. As a rule I finish books that I buy, but that one was really just not good.

The Wolfman
I was generally diaappointed with the acting - although Hugo Weaving had a few excellent moments

"That comet looks awfully close", said Dany.....
Feb. 19th, 2010 02:20 pm (UTC)
Ahh you beat me to it. Yeah, just drop our friendly, neighborhood red comet and it'll have the same effect. Then instead of everyone arguing about what its sudden appearance meant, they can argue about why half a continent is gone!

I gather there's a whole bunch of people waiting for HBO to greenlight this series, and I'm going slightly mad from answering all those questionsa bout when?, who?, where? because people get this fancy idea that I know the answers since I'm following your LJ. But I get my fingers crossed.

Dear George,

Far away from you, in cold and snowy Wall Russia, many people are crossing their fingers for you, wishing you luck and sending our love. I wish we could have sent you a hydrogen bomb as well, but those things are quite hard to find nowadays here. =)
Feb. 19th, 2010 06:46 pm (UTC)
Well, everybody knows you have to go to Kazakhstan for those.
Feb. 19th, 2010 09:44 am (UTC)
*fingers crossed & breath held for the greenlight*!
Feb. 19th, 2010 09:49 am (UTC)
I don't know about hydrogen bombs, but you have dragons. I hear they can be pretty destructive.

PS. The world crosses its fingers with you on Game of Thrones.

Wolfman C?
Hi George,

I think you are being very generous giving Wolfman a C.

I watched it last week, I was pretty excited after what I thought was a good trailer, but 10 mins into the movie after about 4 or 5 pointless things to make you jump I started to wonder if I had made a mistake. After that it just went down hill.

Hopkins was OK but the material was just lame, I haven't seen the classic - but it can't be the same story surely?

Overall I tell anyone to stay well away from this movie - it's too serious to be a B movie and too crappy to be a serious movie. If anyone wants a werewolf movie go and watch “American werewolf in London” or “The Howling” or for a good laugh “Dog Soldiers”.

If you nuke Meereen does that mean that all the characters that are not there get to live? Then I'm all for it :P

"que sera, sera"

nice to read some spanish words from you!

Hope the HBO gives the greenlight to this project, I'm so excited about it!

but today I've read this http://winter-is-coming.net/2010/02/rumor-hbo-reaction-to-screening-not-positive/

I wish this post becomes untrue :( It would be a crap!
Feb. 19th, 2010 10:47 am (UTC)
Did you see Waldrop's and Person's joint review of Wolfman at Locus Online? Similar assessment to your own.

Never been very fond of horror films featuring werewolves myself. Except, of course, for this classic The Monster Squad moment. ;)
Feb. 19th, 2010 11:19 am (UTC)
HBO will not miss this opportunity to create a new hit series. Have faith.
Feb. 19th, 2010 11:59 am (UTC)
Oh yeah, we need definitely more explosions at Westeros. Meteroids, Volcanos or something. Meereen=Pompeii, Problem solved. ;D
Feb. 19th, 2010 12:24 pm (UTC)
I didn't see Werewolf, and I'm not too sure about being thrilled to go see it,a cutally. The making up DOES look awesome, but make up doesn't make a movie, as far as I'm concerned...

And, I hope HBO will give the OK... we can only wait, at that time, duh? XD I read Doorways, and I really loved it. At the same time, I was torned, because if Doorways would have make it, then you wouldn't be writing ASOIAF ;) ASOIAF though has a huge fanbase that Dooarways didn't, so let's keep our fingers crossed :)

Good luck with Meereen and have fun in Westeros :)

H-Bomb for Meereen
It worked for Stephen King in The Stand. Hell, a lot of people think that is his best book.
Feb. 19th, 2010 01:09 pm (UTC)
I don't think Westeros would have H-bombs... however in a D&D Campaign, there was a player (nice person, but the character was a total waste of time and space, and irritating to boot) who really annoyed the DM. Simply put, the DM had a dragon fly overhead one day, and the cow the dragon was planning on eating later slipped from the dragon's talons. Flying Bovine DM Vengeance. It's turned into something of a running joke. Maybe a flock of Dragons could get clumsy over Mereen?
Feb. 20th, 2010 08:38 pm (UTC)
all they need is a Stealth Catapult and some Wildfire ; )

Of Hydrogen Bombs in Fantas y Settings
I remember when I was 14 I used to wonder how different the War of the Ring would have been if only Gondor had but a single F-15 with a tactical nuke or two strapped under the wing. One 30 minute flight to Barad-Dur and it would be all over...

...ah, the mind of a 14 year-old.

hbo series
I read in a few places that there is a good chance of it being picked up due to your fan base. Is there anything we can do to help lobby HBO? In the end it is about ratings. I am an HBO subscriber and I have thought about dropping HBO for Showtime since right now showtime has better original programming. Also, Didn't you write the screenplay for the pilot? A few other things. I am surprised that you had to find out through CNN who the producers are of Skin Trade. I figured they would tell you. They really blow off the authors once you sell them the rights don't they? anyway you can get through the scars and tell us what DOORWAYS was?
Feb. 19th, 2010 07:52 pm (UTC)
Re: hbo series
DOORWAYS was a science fiction show George created, the pilot of which was filmed but not picked up. Some details about it can be read here, from a person who watched it at the Toronto Worldcon when GRRM was Guest of Honor.

I don't think there's anything much fans can do right now, other than perhaps start subscribing to HBO now and find some way you're doing it to support their pursuing Game of Thrones. Subscribers is what matters most to them, end of the day.

I received Dreamsongs as a Christmas present, so I had the opportunity to read The Skin Trade last month for the first time. It was such a treat, and definitely one of my favorite stories. Most of the stories really blew me away, and brought back that sense of wonder. I've started reading my sixth book since reading Dreamsongs, yet your stories are the ones that keep popping up in my head. Needless to say, I'm pretty excited to see the news about The Skin Trade. That will be a werewolf movie I'll definitely not miss.

I would give Wolfman a B for the visuals, the music and that scene with the psychologist and room full of doctors that made me chuckle.
