The Meereenese Knot...

... may be fraying, just a little.

But don't quote me on that.

New book
I think at the end of the series, when its all said and done you should release a special

"A Song of Ice and Fire: The Saga of the Knot" to detail all the revisions and stuff. It would easily be the greatest quest story ever.

Re: New book
I like the idea of something like How I Dealt With the Knot, after all is done. Maybe a post on Not a Blog or the website.

Y'know, maybe the dragons didn't burn the knot. If the rope involved was made out of twisted gut, it might have been like jerky - they might have eaten it! Om nom nom nom! Sorry, feeling a little whimsical. Eagerly anticipating the new book when it comes out.

Great and Argh!
Glad to hear it is coming unraveled, but now I'm banging my head trying to remember some kids joke about "a frayed knot" that is just teasing my memory, argh. I hate it when stuff like that happens...

Re: Great and Argh!
Three strings walk into a bar. Bartender says "We don't serve STRINGS here!" They leave, and one of them walks around the corner, twists himself and ties himself and fluffs his hair and turns and walks back into the bar. The bartender says "What'll it ...heeeeey....aren't you a string???" The string replies....

Wait for it...

"Nope, I'm afrAYED KNOT."

We all need to chip in and buy George the literary equivalent of a Valyrian sword so he can hack through that knot Alexander-style.

I started rereading your four previous Ice and Fire books. Maybe the problem is that Daenerys is too removed from the other characters and she can't interact with them. Maybe you could bring back a horribly disfigured Viserys the Beggar King and have her fight with him and have that end with Daenerys winning and then coming to Westeros. Maybe you can have some spies that from Westeros that are in the same city as Daenerys and they could interact too.

So wait -- is the objective to untie the knot or to break the rope in half?

Or am I just taking the metaphor too far?

3 Strings walk into a bar...
...the first string goes up to the bartender and says "I'll have a dry martini."
.
"We don't serve strings in here, you're gonna have to leave."
.
The second string flips around a bit before he approaches the bartender, then says "Give me a beer in a clean glass."
.
Says the bartender: "I said we don't serve strings, especially ones that are already all looped up."
.
The third string starts wildly twisting and fliping and then rolling around on the ground, back and forth, to and fro. Then he goes up to bartender and says "Whisky, neat."
.
The bartender eyes him up for a second and questions him "you're not a string, are you?"
.
"Frayed knot."
.
.
Thank you, I'll be here all week. Try the sole.

WOOT! . . . or at least that's what I would say if you sounded more uplifting. But hey, at least you can see a light at the end of all this, and really isn't that what really matters?

Really looking forward to another epic installment. I wish you luck good sir.

Untying the knot
I know you don't like unsolicited advice. . . but have you considered how many problems you might avoid by introducing some new "factors" into your story?

For instance, I recall you saying something about making timelines fit together more easily when dealing with several characters.

Ever thought about how much time they spend WALKING?

My humble suggestion would be to deus-ex-machina some Guild Navigators from the "Dune" universe to introduce space-folding technology. Your readers won't mind. Heck, we'd basically accept anything, just to have this book in your sweaty, greedy hands.

So. . . I might start with introducing the "spice."

Just a thought. :)

Re: Untying the knot
Believe me, the number of times I have wanted to introduce a magical portal, and/or have my characters click their heels together and say, "There's no place like King's Landing," is beyond count. So far I have manfully resisted these temptations.

I completely disagree. I would mind. The story up to now appears "authentic" to the reader. Not too many magic swords, fancy spells, even the dragons are introduced very subtly. I have the feeling that if you suddenly start to make use of shortcuts like magic portals (in video gaming language this would be called: hacks!) at this point of the story the whole series loses a credibility which has been carefully build up over many thousands of pages.
Your suggestion appears to me like a selfish effort to convince George to just finish his story "somehow" so we'll get this book sooner. Understandable from a certain point of view but still unacceptable.
(Probably just a harmless suggestion but nevertheless that's how I feel about it)

Ummm...
This may be a little off topic, and weird, but...
I was re-re-re-reading A Storm of Swords, and I got to Tyroin's wedding night and after his brides description i have to wonder (because it sounds like) Tyroin is circumcised. Is he? And is it a common practice in Westeros?

What you should do is quietly finish the book, check the blizzard webpage every day until the release date for Starcraft 2 is confirmed, then announce your release date and make a good portion of the nerd worlds heads explode.

Knot jokes
You see it is a bit of string that has been in a fight and become tangled and frayed.
So it is now a FRAYED KNOT.

Give me strength!
