Coming to Chicago

Now it can be told. I'll be headed back to Chicago (my old stomping grounds, in my younger days) next month, April 16-18, as a guest of Avatar Press at C2E2, the Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo. For more details check out

and the rest of the C2E2 website.

Avatar is bringing me in to help promote the debut of their adaptation of my historical horror novel FEVRE DREAM, due out that month. They're doing the novel as a ten-issue miniseries, scripted by Daniel Abraham, with art by Rafa Lopez. I'll be doing the usual round of panels and readings, and also spending a lot of time at the Avatar booth in the dealer's room, signing copies of the first issue of FEVRE DREAM and whatever else you might want me to sign.

See you there, I hope!

Very cool. I doubt we'll make it out to the con, but I'm excited to check out the Fevre Dream adaptation.

Ok, I know this isn't a comment about this post, but thanks for letting us fans know about the suvudu cage matches. I haven't laughed that hard in a while and it really brightened my day.

Cage Matches
Jaime is tearing the little witch apart...

Re: Cage Matches
Yeah, it goes better than I hoped.

I liked Fevre Dream. Personally, I'm not into comics, but it's a story I can see working well in that form and gaining new readers.

That sounds awesome. Too bad I won't be able to make it . . . grrr!
Mar. 10th, 2010 11:15 pm (UTC)
Wow! Congratulations. Seems like this a big year for you on the little screen!
Loads of luck. I'll be sure to catch this when this comes out. May there be many more.

Not a tv mini series
FYI, this is a graphic novel adaptation of Fevre Dream. Not tv or film.

Awesome, George! I hope to see you there, too!
Mar. 11th, 2010 12:12 am (UTC)
very cool!

I wasn't going to go to C2E2, but now I may have to.

Go U Northwestern!
Any chance you'll be stopping by our old alma mater? Drinks at Nevin's perhaps?
Mar. 11th, 2010 12:42 am (UTC)
Just read Fevre Dream as part of a SciFi book club I'm in. One of the big discussion points is that we all independently imagined Abner as looking like you in this profile pic, only wartier.

Great book!

Con stuff
So is the reading session going to be a mix of your works, just DANCE, or just FEVRE?

A yet unrevealed Dance chapter would be super sweet...I'm sure that hasn't been brought up to you by anyone yet. Actually a Dying of the Light or Meat Man nugget would be way cool.

Either way- looking forward to the visit.

I've never been to a convention before, but my friend and I are now strongly considering going. Will there be a chance to get a book signed without getting a VIP pass?
Mar. 14th, 2010 01:31 am (UTC)
Saw this on the Avatar ticket page:

"Also included is access to special Avatar VIP-only autograph lines for Garth Ennis, George R.R. Martin, and Max Brooks. Only VIP holders will get into these priority signings, the best way to get autographs from these creators!"

So it sounds like VIPs get first crack at autographs, then everyone else.

I live an hour's train ride from Chicago. You are my all time favorite author in the universe, ever. I mean that sincerely. However, on the evening in question, I will be enjoying the following activities: cleaning up after my children, disciplining said children, taking dogs out to crap, and waiting up til 1 AM for my over worked under paid husband. I'm just afraid I'm booked solid. Unless of course they invent a way for me to LEGALLY strap my kids down and force them to be quiet for several hours. But, alas, that has not happened yet. I'm afraid you'll have to await my presence for many moons to come, Mr. Martin. Until then I'll be cuddling up with A Song of Ice and Fire to refresh my memory whilst awaiting the Dance... *tear*

Can't wait for C2E2, George. This will be my first Con, and I intend to make meeting you a priority. I've digested just about all of your work that's in print, and some that's not. See you in Chicago!
Mar. 11th, 2010 04:17 am (UTC)
Any chance you'll be doing any other signings in the area while you are visiting?
Mar. 11th, 2010 04:55 am (UTC)
Garth Ennis?

This is very tempting, George...
Mar. 11th, 2010 08:30 am (UTC)
I'll have to see if I can make it, it would be cool.
Mar. 11th, 2010 02:00 pm (UTC)
Awesome! Chicago isn't that far from Kentucky! I may just have to make a weekend trip part of my plans.
Mar. 11th, 2010 11:34 pm (UTC)
Great! Could you pick me up on your way through Southern Illinois? I'll bring gas money.

Mar. 11th, 2010 02:47 pm (UTC)
Chicago Pizza

As a fellow pizza lover, I remember you once mentioning how you don't like deep dish pizza. However, since you have left your old stomping grounds, there have been several thin crust pizza places that have opened that sever up a good pie. If you get a chance, you should check them out.
Mar. 11th, 2010 02:52 pm (UTC)
Was already going. Now it's even better.
Mar. 11th, 2010 03:13 pm (UTC)
I'm in northern Michigan, but Chicago is only bout 5 hours away.

I'm gonna TRY TRY TRY to talk my wife into going!!!! We'll bring you and Parris a nice bottle of wine from one of our vineyards in Leelanau County (on the Leelanau Peninsula in Traverse City, Northern Michigan). Maybe a Late Harvest Riesling (our personal favorite).

I'll bring some books. At least the ones that I haven't maulled from reading over and over and over.

Have you ever gone to Buddy Guy's Legends? I heard its pretty cool if you like the blues. We may go there too.

Looking forward to meeting you and shaking your hand!

Neil Gaman
Whoah! I see Neil Gaman will be there, too. Will that dude be there who wrote "George RR Martin Is Not Your Bitch?" :o)

I want to see his presentation, too. But I dunno if I can swing the cash for that. Phew. It'll be a hard sell to the wife about the $125 for the Friday gig. We'll have to see!
Mar. 11th, 2010 05:03 pm (UTC)
I LOVE Fevre Dream! Much prefer your vampires to the adolescent variety so popular these days....Can't wait for the first issue! Wish I lived nearer Chicago...or that you might come to NY. Surely, you have a few fans here, sir!
Mar. 11th, 2010 07:32 pm (UTC)
I'm coming!
I live in Chicago, and the Loch Ness monster, squads of Nazi Frogmen and Nymeria's pack of wolves combined couldn't stop me from being there!
Mar. 11th, 2010 08:38 pm (UTC)
Avatar rawk. They have some of the best writters in comics working for them. Their artists ain't too shabby either. I got to meet some of them at the Avatar booth @ Comicon some years ago. They were cool cats, George you'll fit right in. Have fun at the convention man!

Ticket prices
I live in Chicago and would love to go to this, but if I'm understanding correctly, you not only have to purchase a pass to get into C2e2, but also have to purchase a ticket to Avatar's event?

That makes it, at minimum, $100 for two people ($25/ea. for single-day admission to the con; $25/ea. for the Avatar event). And that only gets you admission, not any goodies. A bit too hard to swallow in this economy. :(
Mar. 14th, 2010 07:24 pm (UTC)
Re: Ticket prices
We've been trying to figure this out. It appears to be a ticketed event, but the only ticket information I see on the Avatar website are the gold/platinum VIP tickets. The other tickets on the Avatar website are for C2E2 admission per day or for the weekend.

Where did you get the info about the $25 Avatar event tickets?
