... on the theory that, sooner or later, we have to stop talking about fanfic.

So, let's see. Casting is in full swing for the HBO series. No one has been cast yet. But I think we're getting close on a few roles.

I've been looking at many audition tapes. Varys. Littlefinger. Pyp. Grenn. Sam. Ser Gregor. Renly. Bronn. Septa Mordane. Jory. The Old Bear. Even Marillion. And probably some other characters that I've forgotten about, writing this off the top of my head.

Some very hard choices await us. For some parts, a wealth of great possibilities, and no way to go wrong. For others, two or three strong contenders, then it tails off sharply. For a few, we have yet to see anyone who excites us, so the search goes on.

I've been asked if I will once again be giving "hints" when parts are cast. Honest answer: I don't know. I had fun with that last time around, and I think you guys did too. (It astonished me how quickly you solved some of those puzzles). But now that we have an actual series, HBO may very well want all casting announcements to come through them. Or maybe they won't care. In any case, he who pays the piper calls the tune, so I'll dance to whatever they play.

Tell you what, though... to save you guys the trouble of trying to parse every syllable of my posts here for hints and hidden meanings that do not exist, I will use a simple signal. If I do add any posts with casting hints, I'll use my Froggy the Gremlin userpic. If Froggy is not up there, then there are no hints in the post, so don't sweat it. (This is pretty much what I did last time round, I'm just making it explicit).

I think we're going to get some great people.

Thanks for the updates! It's really great of you to share news with us.

I bet it's going to be quite difficult to cast Gregor and Littlefinger. Hopefully you'll get lucky with those roles and find the perfect person. It would be fun if you got an actual semi-famous or famous musician to play Marillion.

Not sure if you're allowed to speak about this, but what are your plans for portrayal of the songs in ASOIAF? You've obviously wrote out the lyrics but do you have an idea in mind for the melodies? It will be a real treat to hear the songs performed.

New Catelyn
I am a huge fan of your books and am so excited about the HBO series. I happened to see on IMDB that the role of Catelyn Stark is going to be played by a different actress than in the pilot. Could you possibly shed some light on this?

Thanks so much and I hope you come to the Philadelphia area soon so that I can meet you and get an autograph!

Re: New Catelyn
On a similar note, are they recasting the whole thing, or will they be keeping some of the actors from the pilot?

As long as we can be wildly hopeful, Sean Connery as Bariston Selmy. Not only would he be amazing, it would mean his career wouldn't go out on a crapfest like League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

I can't wait until they start casting Lord Tywin.

You must stop at nothing to get Kurtwood Smith for the role. Anyone else would be unacceptable.

I was thinking Patrick Stewart.

Red Foreman and his Red Gold?
Not sure Kurt could do a passable Brit accent, although I love him as the evil heavy.
Others have suggested Bill Nighy for the same reasons, and I think he'd do a great job.
Still, I picture Tywin as being a larger-than-life guy, though. Somebody who doesn't look like you can push him over with a stiff breeze. Not huge, just substantial and imposing.
Patrick Stewart has too much "Picard" baggage. I wouldn't buy him as rotten to the core and would keep expecting him to call Jaimie "Number One"!

Dany. Rolled a fattie, watched tudors season 4. i like tamzin merchant... she only really played frivilous and flirty (with a bunch of emotions jumbled in)and is about to get her head chopped but shes a good actor.

so. is she set in stone? i know some thought she wouldnt be pretty enough... but i think with those violet contacts in, a lil bit of hairdye and wardrobe magic our hearts will melt and tongues will wag... its much more important to have an actor rather than a megan fox-type that would just butcher a role which is gonna call for a tremendous acting skill...

so what about that recast rumor... for Game of Thrones, looking for "Dany"? it is, i hope, just a rumor? can u confirm that? sorry... i know shes ur daughter Mr. Martin, but u know we love her too...

damnit! as soon as i write the msg, wikipedia is claiming as of april 29, 2010 Dany is no longer a part of Game of Thrones and the role has been recast... by whooooooo????????????????????????????????????????????

please please please please don't say megan fox

You mentioned in one of the previous posts that you're friends with Ron Perlman. I dearly hope you get him into the casting some how. Even if he's just a cameo.

Hi Martin, I did not understand what is "froggy". Could you kindly show me? Thank you! :)

Pilot airing?
Do we know yet whether the pilot will air on HBO anytime before the series itself starts? Like this summer or fall, to build hype/buzz for the series? Or is that sort of tactic not done?

Re: Pilot airing?
Something like that was done with Glee... I don't think it's very common though.

Character Bios
While we are on the subject of characters and casting, for those who haven't seen these, go to www.imdb.com and search for Game of Thrones. When you click on the link of a character's name, it takes you to a page of information from IMDB's vast database. Included here near the top is a Bio of the character, but you have to click the "See more" option.
SPOILER ALERT! These seem to be compiled by the film production, not the book, and include references "(AGOT14)" which I take to be scene numbers from the pilot. So be aware that you may learn something about plans for those characters and the producers' impression of them!
These are only for the unaired Pilot, but I assume they are true for the series run.

So what accent will the characters have? Is it going to be Irish, or some weird fantasy conglomerate? Just curious.

I think one of the most overlooked aspects of A Song of Fire and Ice as it relates to the upcoming TV series and is subsequent casting is the age of the characters. I would really like to see the HBO series portray as accurately the age of the characters as they are known or supposed in the books. I don't just mean the children: Sansa, Arya, Bran, etc. I think the series would benefit from portraying characters such as Eddard Stark and Robert Baratheon as I believe them to be in the books, in their mid to late thirties. It further displays the fragility of the current political climate of The Seven Kingdoms when the king and many of the lords and knights are of an age that our society would still consider fairly young. Among many other characters and examples, Robb Stark cast as a true fifteen year old thrown into the position of King of The North not only is accurate from the books, but I think it is something that would strongly be noticed and resonate with viewers not familiar with the book series. It is empowering for young people to see characters that have responsibilities thrust upon them and take those challenges and succeed. A contrasting difference to how youth is portrayed in most mass media outlets currently.

Either Or
Wow. How about A Song of Ice and Fire? My first post ever on a blog and I put the right shoe on the left foot. I will assume most of you deciphered the correct series I was referencing.

I'll say it again... to anyone who will listen... Paul Giamatti would be excelent as Varys. Watch "John Adams," particularly the scenes with him not wearing his wig. Add some white powder on his face... perfect.

HBO series will be legendary
I'm looking forward to the tv series, books are phenomenal. Good luck to you sir...can't even imagine how you are able to handle everything that's on your plate.
