... on the theory that, sooner or later, we have to stop talking about fanfic.
So, let's see. Casting is in full swing for the HBO series. No one has been cast yet. But I think we're getting close on a few roles.
I've been looking at many audition tapes. Varys. Littlefinger. Pyp. Grenn. Sam. Ser Gregor. Renly. Bronn. Septa Mordane. Jory. The Old Bear. Even Marillion. And probably some other characters that I've forgotten about, writing this off the top of my head.
Some very hard choices await us. For some parts, a wealth of great possibilities, and no way to go wrong. For others, two or three strong contenders, then it tails off sharply. For a few, we have yet to see anyone who excites us, so the search goes on.
I've been asked if I will once again be giving "hints" when parts are cast. Honest answer: I don't know. I had fun with that last time around, and I think you guys did too. (It astonished me how quickly you solved some of those puzzles). But now that we have an actual series, HBO may very well want all casting announcements to come through them. Or maybe they won't care. In any case, he who pays the piper calls the tune, so I'll dance to whatever they play.
Tell you what, though... to save you guys the trouble of trying to parse every syllable of my posts here for hints and hidden meanings that do not exist, I will use a simple signal. If I do add any posts with casting hints, I'll use my Froggy the Gremlin userpic. If Froggy is not up there, then there are no hints in the post, so don't sweat it. (This is pretty much what I did last time round, I'm just making it explicit).
I think we're going to get some great people.

I bet it's going to be quite difficult to cast Gregor and Littlefinger. Hopefully you'll get lucky with those roles and find the perfect person. It would be fun if you got an actual semi-famous or famous musician to play Marillion.
Not sure if you're allowed to speak about this, but what are your plans for portrayal of the songs in ASOIAF? You've obviously wrote out the lyrics but do you have an idea in mind for the melodies? It will be a real treat to hear the songs performed.
Thanks so much and I hope you come to the Philadelphia area soon so that I can meet you and get an autograph!
You must stop at nothing to get Kurtwood Smith for the role. Anyone else would be unacceptable.
Others have suggested Bill Nighy for the same reasons, and I think he'd do a great job.
Still, I picture Tywin as being a larger-than-life guy, though. Somebody who doesn't look like you can push him over with a stiff breeze. Not huge, just substantial and imposing.
Patrick Stewart has too much "Picard" baggage. I wouldn't buy him as rotten to the core and would keep expecting him to call Jaimie "Number One"!
so. is she set in stone? i know some thought she wouldnt be pretty enough... but i think with those violet contacts in, a lil bit of hairdye and wardrobe magic our hearts will melt and tongues will wag... its much more important to have an actor rather than a megan fox-type that would just butcher a role which is gonna call for a tremendous acting skill...
so what about that recast rumor... for Game of Thrones, looking for "Dany"? it is, i hope, just a rumor? can u confirm that? sorry... i know shes ur daughter Mr. Martin, but u know we love her too...
please please please please don't say megan fox
SPOILER ALERT! These seem to be compiled by the film production, not the book, and include references "(AGOT14)" which I take to be scene numbers from the pilot. So be aware that you may learn something about plans for those characters and the producers' impression of them!
These are only for the unaired Pilot, but I assume they are true for the series run.
