No Place Like Home

We got back home last night, after a pleasant weekend at LepreCon. The convention was very small, only half the size of Bubonicon, but the Phoenix fen were a friendly bunch and we had a great time.

I should never go away, though. The amount of stuff that builds up when I leave, even for a short trip like this one, is truly daunting. Hundreds of emails, huge stacks of snail mail (bills, contracts, junk, with a few real letters salted in)... and, for this trip at least, must be a hundred or more new audition tapes for parts both small (Rast, Mord, Jhogo) and large (Lord Tywin, Ser Barristan, Lysa Arryn) in the HBO series. I was keeping up with the auditions pretty well. Now I'm way, way behind...

Well, nothing to do but get into it. I have another convention trip coming up soon, and lots to do before we go.

I'm sorry you have so much to do! Good luck with all your work!

back in it
Glad you're back to the routine. Keep writing, George!

So when are they going to option Meathouse Man for a movie? Although an awesomely fresh idea in the zombie world, I think it would make a great "b" style movie. But I mean that in a good way. It's hardly cheesy, but it could be a beloved classic of the gore/edgy genre.

Borrow a snow blower?
Yeah, like taking a 'vacation' when you have to bust your ass for days before you leave to hand every thing off to your backup (if you're lucky enough to have one) or defer it until you get back, then days digging your way out of the pile once you return. Your conventions are similar to my vacations in that I often end up working on mine as well!

hope you get it all back under control (using that term loosely). Don't forget about Kong ;)

You know, it probably says something about me that I read that as LeperCon.
May. 19th, 2010 10:38 pm (UTC)
I did too! LOL

I want to thank you for taking time out to come to AZ. It was wonderful to listen to you speak on the panels and getting to meet you in person. Thank You!!!

Shoo "stuff"... Go away and leave Mr. Martin alone to do that... you know. That writing thing he does. ;-)

i sincerely hope that alan dale is in the running for tywin. his gravelly voice (along with his GRAVITAS!) is exactly what i picture for the lion of lannister.

the fact that he's older isn't much of a problem IMO because a) he looks younger than his age and b) many in the series are being aged up anyways.
May. 20th, 2010 05:47 am (UTC)
Oh man!
I hadn't thought of that, but YES.

The one I've seen bandied about on some sites that I would LOVE is Terence Stamp as Ser Barristan.

I understand - I travel fairly frequently - most of the time for pleasure and I have a job that is draining - when I get overwhelmed I remind myself how lucky I am and that I get to do more in ONE DAY then some people get to do in a year ( I try to sell this as a positive - sometimes it works other times I feel even more sorry for myself!!)

good luck and i must say I am looking forward to the day when I see that there is new material in the fire and ice update section

Dear Mr. Martin,

I'm a 26 boy from Málaga on the South of Spain. Firstly, I wish to encourage you for all the work you are copying with and then, though you look really good in your avatars, I would like to say you to eat bunchs of soy food and salad in order to keep you healthy and unwind yourself. Also I would like to say that some of us cannot wait to see the series finished but we are really dying to have the next book in our hands... Talking about hands, I for instance, have no more nails to bite...

Keep up the good job!

Audition Tapes
You mentioned "keeping up with the auditions" -- do you have a role (or a say) selecting the actors or just curious who's auditioning for what?
May. 19th, 2010 11:51 pm (UTC)
Re: Audition Tapes
I have a voice, yes... but final decision rests with David & Dan, subject to the approval of HBO.
May. 19th, 2010 11:21 pm (UTC)
Sorry I missed it! (Stupid life, interfering with my fun.)
May. 19th, 2010 11:35 pm (UTC)
For what it's worth, I am hoping one of the auditioners for Tywin will be Bill Nighy ..... possibly Ed Harris.
May. 20th, 2010 05:05 am (UTC)
Yes, Ed Harris, as depicted by one of your readers who submitted a picture of Ed Harris as Tywin.

It's been a while!
Phew!! I was starting to worry! You hadn't posted anything since May 11th, when you're usually so regular in your posts. I'm glad nothing happened to you and I wish you the best of luck dealing with all the stuff you have going on. Honestly, I don't know how you make the time. I only wish you can do all that while maintaining your good health. We wouldn't want your children (as you refer to them) to be left without a final destiny :)

Keep up the good work, Mr. Martin!

I hope you had a wonderful time while you were here in AZ. It was a bucket list moment getting to meet you and chat. Kid duties caused me and my wife to miss your Guest of Honor presentation and the BWB party. Hope that was more fun than the men in tights! It wasn't until later that evening that I realized I should have just brought the kids to the hotel and tied them up in the room. Oh well, there will be other conventions . . .

I purchased the Heinlein books you recommended. Starting with "Have Spacesuit" and working my way up to the "Moon is a Harsh Mistress." Gonna start on those as soon as I finish Sam Sykes' "Tome of the Undergates." Cheers!

Thank you for coming out to LepreCon. You were one of the deciding factors I used for attending this year, and I hope you had as much fun as the rest of us were having.

Good luck in plowing through everything. You have my sympathies there.
May. 20th, 2010 02:25 am (UTC)
I'm DYING to see who ends up as Tywin. It's got to be someone who can speak volumes with nothing more than a cold stare.
May. 20th, 2010 02:29 am (UTC)

What are your thoughts on the recent tourism boycott of AZ?

I am personally conflicted like hell; some of my close friends (artists and performers struggling to open a theatre) live and work there in Phoenix, but at the same time I believe in the boycott's cause and think that there is a real power in numbers.

Right or wrong, I'm mainly curious of what your stand on the situation is. There is a real human face on any given side; political action is always easier said than done :/

Re: AZ
As an AZ native I find this bill distressing, especially since it is not indicitive of the feeling of the entire population. 60% of Arizonans support it, but they are your typical yahoos that just don't bother to think beyond what they are told and don't realize the full implications of this law. The 40% of us who do know better are being hurt by the apathetic 60% because they have the majority. Do we need immigration reform? Yes. Is this the answer? Absolutely not!
May. 20th, 2010 03:47 am (UTC)
It was great spending a little time getting to know you and Parris, George - and the panel we did with Sam was a lot of fun. Hope to see you again soon!

May. 20th, 2010 04:02 am (UTC)
Perhaps, you can't say anything on the matter but I was curious what the current situation is with Ms. Tamzin. Is there still a chance that she may be our Dany after all?
May. 20th, 2010 01:30 pm (UTC)
I get the impression that, as a producer on the show, George might not be able to officially comment directly on the situation with Tamzin Merchant leaving the project. The last official word we had from HBO (via the Watcher blog at the Chicago Tribune) was that she was gone and would not be participating in the TV series, and the role of Daenerys would be recast and her scenes in Morocco reshot with the new actress (who has not been chosen or announced yet):

That to me sounds pretty definitive that Ms. Merchant will not be involved in the production as Daenerys.

Are the auditions still open? Or has the call gone out and long been answered?
May. 20th, 2010 12:19 pm (UTC)
Somewhere in your piled-up email is one from us letting you know that we can do the road trip and we're arriving at ABQ on Tuesday late afternoon :-> Getting a Budget car there so we can add you to the contract in Santa Fe.
May. 21st, 2010 04:03 pm (UTC)
Wow, imagine hitting the con trail with GRRM! And a road trip to boot -- must be a ton of fun! I can only imagine what it'd be like to be on such a fan-tastic trip, haha. Do you guys play some sort of license plate game where you make up new Wild Cards characters? :)

I hope you enjoy the con and can relax a bit, Mr. Martin. How do you feel about KC BBQ? Hopefully you'll be able to squeeze in a few BBQ platters while you're out there.

June is fast approaching
Sorry to hear work has piled up in your absence. With June fast approaching, and filming of the HBO series due to commence, will you be taking more time out to visit the filming sets, and risking more work pile-up or will you be taking more of a back seat and following it from afar?
May. 20th, 2010 06:48 pm (UTC)
Re: June is fast approaching
Much as I would like to spend a lot of time watching the HBO series being filmed, it is simply not possible. I have way too much work to do here at home.

(And truth be told, a writer on a film set is often as useful as nipples on a breastplate. By the time the cameras start to roll, the project rests in the hands of the actors, directors, and showrunners. I am none of those things on GAME OF THRONES)

I may decide to visit the shoot when my own episode -- episode eight -- is being filmed. But even that depends on when and where and what I'm doing at the time. I will likely also drop by Belfast for a day or two after Octocon in Dublin come October, since I'll be in Ireland anyway. (If we're shooting in Belfast at that time, and not on some distant location). But only for a day or three.

Also, FWIW, I am now informed that the start of principle photography has been pushed back to late July.

I have missed the billboard, sir, and I'm glad to see you're back and all is well! Definitely good to see you have your priorities straight - although I know that mere knowledge of what's important doesn't make it go away. If only there were more hours in the day to where you could work on your list there AND have some time to relax! Here's hoping that your next con is a bit less stressful! :)

My son gave me back my copy of SUICIDE KINGS this week and said it was great, and like me, he's looking forward to FORT FREAK. (His mother, though, is not as enthusiastic...ah, but that's a conversation for another time!)
