A Casting We Will Go

ireland
Auditions continue in Dublin, Belfast, and London for a whole bunch of parts, both major and minor, on HBO's GAME OF THRONES.

Sometimes it is a very hard job.

I've just reviewed the tapes of twelve young women reading for the part of Shae.

Excuse me. I need to go take a cold shower now.

Sadly, it turns out that HBO paid them to make those tapes for you.

Shae has a strange place in my heart. I can see why you'd need the cold shower.

Hrm, Shae's not introduced until quite late -- near the end of the season, in fact -- so the casting seems to have gone well beyond the first few episodes at this point. Cool!

What scene(s) were used for Shae, I wonder? I'm guessing the immortal line, "My mother named me Shae. Men call me . . . often," is in there...

Well, filming starts this month, doesn't it? I'm not sure how long it will run but doesn't it traditionally go about one week per episode? So, they'll need her sometime next month. And if they are going to film some things out of order due to location issues and other logistics they may need her sooner than that.

How much is the mini-series supposed to cover, in terms of the books?

The plan for Season 1 is to cover the entirety of A GAME OF THRONES (from "We should star back," to the air coming alive with the sounds of dragons), then for Season 2 to cover all of A CLASH OF KINGS. What happens after that, as A STORM OF SWORDS is way too big to be adapted as 10 or maybe even 12 episodes, is unclear. I think George said the rough plan is for one season per book, but that plan is not set in stone for the later books/seasons.

Reminds me of a story Ralph Bakshi told about casting for one of his films with Frank Frazetta...ironically enough "Fire and Ice".

But I looked on your website for a place to email this, but didn't see anything...

anyway, at Balticon this year the guy who wrote the song "George RR Martin is not your Bitch" sang his song live on a panel, and it is great to hear everyone sing along and cheer with it. It is at about the middle of this podcast (the live recording) http://isbw.murlafferty.com/2010/06/isbw-146-explicit-live-from-balticon-with-john-anealio-gail-carriger-and-matt-wallace/
