For me "Cat of the Canals" was the best piece of writing in the series so far. With a bit of tweaking it could almost be a self-contained short story - or at least the first half of one (leaving off on a cliffhanger as it does). I sometimes pull it out just to read all on its own. I only do that with a few other single chapters from a few other novels: the opening chapter of "A Farewell to Arms" and the "Lee Shore" chapter of "Moby Dick" spring to mind.
