My Second Life

I can barely keep up with my first life, if truth be told... but all the same, I'll be having a second life come Thursday.

Yes, I'm making a virtual appearance in Bantam's virtual bookstore on Second Life. For those of you who don't know it, Second Life is... well, sort of like World of Warcraft without the axes, swords, and monsters. Our world, kinda sorta, virtually. Anyway, I'll be there this Thursday evening, in avatar form, doing a reading from A DANCE WITH DRAGONS and doing a Q&A afterwards. Proceedings will start at 9:00pm eastern and run about an hour. This will be a first for me, so it will be fun to see how it goes. Ah, 'tis a brave new world, surely.

If you'd like to be part of the festivities, get thee to www.secondlife.com. You can sign up there, download the software, and design your own avatar. (I've never done a reading with monsters in the audience before, at least not the sort you could tell my looking at 'em).

The virtual bookstore can only hold about sixty avatars, but the overflow will be able to see and hear the reading from satellite sites, and send questions via IM.

I've never done this before either, so that's about all I can tell you about how things will work... but if you live out in the bookdocks where I'm never likely to visit on a book tour, this virtual appearance could be the next best thing. See you there!

I trust you've been warned about the flying virtual, uh, body parts that sometimes are unleashed upon such occasions?

ha. one of our in-world stunts crashed the servers, and half the avs came back naked, wearing odd hats. LOL (I was spared that indignity, but I got stuck in the crotch of my editor-in-chief's avatar. And lo, a new term was born: boss-crotching.)

Such appendages as you've never seen, sir. Or so I'm told. Good luck, though! Hope it goes off with out much disruption.

I've known about this for a while, and I've been looking forward to it. I didn't realize you'd be reading from Dance, though! This should be quite a treat, especially since I do in fact live off in the middle of nowhere, where you're unlikely to visit.

Anyway, SL does have some minor issues that can bog down a live event like this, but am hoping it'll go smoothly! Now I just need to be sure to get in early to get a seat.

World of Warcraft? I'm curious and I know you won't respond to this, but do you play?

Come close to WV someday. =)

Speaking of boondocks, (not really, but an effective segway all the same) you should come to Ann Arbor again! I missed you then, but allegedly you recognized a picture of me dressed up as Jon Snow.

A virtual reading though... You should hold a virtual reading/re-enactment in World of Warcraft, because seeing a 'A Song of Ice and Fire' battle re-enacted would be pretty awesome.

By the way, if while you're there the virtual Bantam's sound system starts playing "The Rains of Catamere"... GET OUT.

Good luck with the reading (and dealing with your avatar), George. Make sure you can IM with an organizer in-world for the inevitable server dump (they can teleport you back instead of you mistakenly flying off to Fursuit Isle). I'll give it a go to join -- got work obligations and I'm unsure how late that will run. In any case, have fun!! :)

Just went to the virtual bookstore. It says you will be reading from Dreamsongs, not ADWD.

This had better not be some mummer's farce!

I'm too middle class to understand this technical mumbo-jumbo.
Second Life scares and confuses me almost as much as tax returns.

Aahahaha! I actually just roared with laughter reading that!

Does anyone know if there will be a recording? It's a good time for we Australians, but I have to work! Damn!

Sounds entirely too much like the metaverse in Snow Crash, which someone mentioned to me was the basis for Second Life. Don't know if that is true or not thought.

It's a heck of a lot like the metaverse, although there are probably more furries in SL than Stephenson planned for.

Nice avatar, by the way.

DEPRESSED...
Hello, my comment has nothin to do with fiction movies but rather just a revelation of the way i feel after reading one of the chapters of the third volume of "A Song of Ice and Fire". I know i know, am still in third volume but i was late in acknowledging the talent of GRRM. I must say that am very very depressed. :( after reading the sad chapter in the third volume as u all well know, the incident with the Frey, am not gonna reveal more but DAMN GRRM why did you have to take that decision. You totally took my illusion of coming back home eveyrday from work to read for a couple of hours. Heck, everybody at work knows what am goin through, they laugh at me. I´ve been down the whole day...... Why did you do that????? :( waaaaa. WANT THEM BACK...

this is so cool! It's probably the only book reading I'll ever hear unless you decide to come to Boston. :X me and my friends are making second life accounts just to hear! You should do a world of warcraft one next! kidding. I'm sure you're much too busy for that life sucking game.

Boston?
Unless I decide to come to Boston?

I've been coming to Boston every year for the past six or seven years. Check my Appearances page. Boskone has been one of my favorite cons... at least until they changed hotels.

Re: Boston?
Have you ever thought of paying your fans in Spain a visit :D......
Please consider this and i will be the happiest fan ever hehe, though i would have to comment a couple of things about details from "A song of Ice and Fire". You keep shocking me with new incidents and making me more depresed. Take Care O Great GRRM.... hehe
