Back to My First Life

Spain
Well, I made my appearance on Sheep Island a few hours ago, cleverly disguised as Tyrion the Imp for a reading and Q&A session at Bantam's virtual bookstore. Only this version of Tyrion could fly! Ah, if only the Tyrion in the books could fly, what mischief he will... ah... could... ah, never mind.

Anyway, it was great fun. My thanks to Ken and Dan and Betsy and all the other good folks at Bantam, Second Life, and Electric Sheep who made it possible and kept it running smoothly, and of course to all the fans and readers who donned their finest avatars and popped in for a listen. I hope you enjoyed yourself as much as I did. I hope you all bought a virtual copy of DREAMSONGS too, since that's what we were supposed to be promoting.

And a special thanks to David Benioff and Dan Weiss, who made a surprise guest star appearance to answer questions about the HBO production of A GAME OF THRONES. It was great to have them there, even if they didn't have time to fix their avatars up like the Clegane Brothers, as they wanted.

Even Second Lives must come to an end, however, so now I am back to my original life.

My next appearance will be similarly cutting edge. On Saturday, I will be meeting fans and signing books at Book Expo America in New York City, starting at 11am. I look forward to seeing some of you there, and defacing your books. Unfortunately, Parris has chained me to my desk, so I won't actually be able to leave Santa Fe... but I'll be there signing at the BEA all the same, thank you very much.

The dragon does have three heads, and we do need two more heads...Tyrion is a good bet as one of them.

Hooray for Tyrion, my first ASOIAF love!

I take it that the discussion of the HBO production means all is still going in a positive direction on that front? Ah, who am I kidding? Even if the TV series sucks, I'm still going to buy it on DVD. I just want it to get made.

I hope the desk chaining leads to much writing progress. Maybe I should try that....

I honestly doubt an HBO series of this magnitude would suck.

BTW, can't wait for some more news and the actual series itself. Should be great.

I´m out of the country with limited internet access, so I couldn´t participate. Can anyone fill me in on any news the HBO guys revealed?

Thanks for doing this reading, and especially for answering my question! This was by far the coolest event I've been to so far in Second Life, and it was great to hear you live and to see you in the virtual (well, make that Tyrion's virtual) flesh.

I have an mp3 file of the event that I ripped from the audio stream. Could I put it up on the web for people who didn't get to attend? I personally have a couple friends who really wanted to attend but couldn't figure out Second Life in time, and there must be hundreds of others reading your blog that it also didn't work out for. Who owns the rights to the reading?

Thanks again! (If anyone reading this wants the audio - size is only 26mb for the full hour - you can email me in the meantime at carnadine [at] gmail [dot] com and I'll send it over.)

I'd personally be very interested in the MP3, but I expect the showing is copyrighted to someone or other. I know they will eventually put up a podcast of the event, but looking at past events that they've put up, they seem to edit them down really heavily.

George, if you've any say in it, it'd be great if they made the full Q&A available (the reading too, if possible).

I was watching with the others from SLiterary! The audio wasn't working so I couldn't hear, but it was still exciting to be there, and to see you as Tyrion!

Oh GRRM! The Tyrion hint is rather mean!

And I'm sad I missed this. Maybe next time =)

It was an awesome event! The curveball of Parris, David Benioff and Dan Weiss being there was like the whipped cream and cherry on top.

Sweet, Sharaith! I will be emailing you shortly ;)

Glad that you had a positive first experience in SL, George. I'm bummed that I was exiled to sLiterary for a simulcast -- I would've loved to have seen a better res of your av.

And thanks for doing the reading in SL. :)

I was so disappointed not to get to hear your reading! I joined Second Life, and did a search for Bantam, but when I clicked the Teleport button to take me there, it said it couldn't. And it just said "invalid location" on the map.

Do you know if anyone recorded it for pocasting?

Book Expo!
Okay, so I'm going to Book Expo, but I can't find any info on a GRRM virtual appearance on the event site or elsewhere. Can anyone explain how an electronic signing like this works? Or possibly point me to a page that has info on the event? Like, would there be any point in bringing my own battered and much-loved copy of A Game of Thrones along to the expo? Thank you very much!

Is there a transcript of the proceedings floating around the net anywhere, per chance? The folks running Second Life haven't figured out a way to make it work with screen reading technology yet, and all your blind/visually impaired readers want to see all the juicy answers you gave!

Thank you -- I win a bet! (As soon as I heard about the contest, I thought "Tyrion". Of course he'll be Tyrion.) Now all I have to do is collect on that beer...

my avatar
Well, Tyrion was chosen by popular vote over Robert and Ned.

Sort of a pity that Ned didn't win, since the Second Life people had designed the Ned avatar with a removable head. I would have taken it off during the reading, and let the body wander around the bookshop while the head read.

Might have been a bit distracting, though.

My computer decided not to work that day. I even had the Second Life all regsitered and stuff. *shrug*

Also. This TV series is going to mess with my imagination. They better have a good casting supervisor, because if Jaimie is short, Jon Snow has blonde hair, and Tyrion looks just like Gimli, I'll be seriously bothered.
