Focus and Cyanide Preview RTS Game

Regular readers of this Not A Blog and my website will recall that the French studio Cyanide licensed the rights to do a pair of videogames based on A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE -- a Role Playing Game (RPG)and a Real Time Strategy (RTS) game.

They've been busy ever since, both in France and Montreal. And now, in partnership with Focus Home Entertainment, Cyanide has unveiled some of the art from the RTS, which will be called A GAME OF THRONES: GENESIS.

So herewith a look at the Wall and Castle Black, as they will appear in the RTS. Enjoy!

"A GAME OF THRONES: GENESIS plunges you into the heart of the battles and intrigues between the Families that shaped the Kingdom of Westeros," the press release from Cyanide and Focus promises. "However, victory does not necessarily result from brute force. The innovative game mechanics provide players with numerous paths to success: will you opt for a military, economic or diplomatic approach? Trickery, treachery and deceit are widespread and you will constantly have to watch your back if you want to avoid a bitter defeat! Peacefully or forcefully annex surrounding territories, besiege enemy castles, send spies to infiltrate behind enemy lines, assassinate trouble-making officers or capture them to ask for a ransom... When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground!"

That second painting of the Wall is particularly gorgeous. Glad they have some top notch artists involved in helping to shape the look!

Wow, it looks spectacular.
Will the game be released all over the world?

This is awesome! I can't wait to play them. Now all we need is a sandbox-style game (a la GTA or RDR) set in Westeros, and we'll be SET. ;)

oh these games look fabulous, I wonder what the meaning of using the word 'genesis' here is.

The Castle Black picture isn't quite how I imagined it, but that picture of The Wall is probably *better* than I imagined it. It's difficult to imagine the kind of scale of such a thing as that.

This is the first game I'll have to get the day it comes out. I can just hear the hours clicking by as I get wonderfully lost in it.

Game of Game of Thrones
For some reason this reminds me of the sliding down The Oliphants trunk scene in LOTR's.
A scene that was obviously put in, like so many others, just so the video game would have some light relief. I hope we won't get any of that sort of nonsense with GOT and its related video games. I have not played the video game of LOTR's but I bet that the trunk scene is in there.

Re: Game of Game of Thrones
Actually... No. It's not. Not even close.
Looking forward to this, however.

Wow they look GREAT. Especially the second one!
Jul. 24th, 2010 09:32 am (UTC)
Wow, that looks beautiful. I'd definitely be interested in picking up the RTS.

That is some nice artwork, I can't wait to see some more of this!

looks pretty good. I hope the game will be amazing, kinda anonymous company to take such thrilling work of a writer. But who knows, make it will make them a big name :)

Artwork is great, and the games look interesting. Let's just hope Cyanide/Focus do a better job of the game than they did with their Bloodbowl licence (the actual gameplay is great, but that's down to being based on Games Workshop's boardgame; the online implementation, tech support and their apparent interest in their own game much less so - they're still showing June's league special on the Bloodbowl login page). Will certainly check them out, though - something to do while awaiting the HBO series and the next volume.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with you 100% ... I am sad to say I will not be purchasing these games unless there are some sort of stellar reviews. The only thing Cyanide did right with blood bowl was (mostly) faithfully recreate the already written rules. Everything original they put out, except perhaps the art, was uninspired at best. The user interface, networking and QA was infuriating. Worse, they didn't even seem to recognize this, and instead of fixing bugs and making the game playable and enjoyable, just added more races. I hesitate to say this, as Ice and Fire is one of my favorite pieces of fiction, and I hate to wish ill on the well-deserved royalties of GRRM, but if any company does not deserve this IP, it's Cyanide. I do hope the games perform well, but that's only because I imagine the legal battle surrounding taking away the licensing deal would be horrific for all involved.

After I had already payed $30 for the blood bowl game, I was clued in to a free, java-based client which didn't have the graphical bells and whistles but had a much stronger community, and a much more playable game. I've long since given up on the cyanide game I payed money for, yet still play the free version.

really, really excited!
Is release date known?
Jul. 24th, 2010 12:55 pm (UTC)
Guh. The Wall. THE WALL. I want that picture pasted on everything around me.

Any idea what gaming system these will be for? I already know I don't own it, but hey, if I'm already getting HBO for the sake of one show...

Cyanide do PC games primarily, though Bloodbowl is also available on X-Box.

Amazing, especially the first one. Can't wait for more!

What platform is this going to be on?
Jul. 24th, 2010 03:02 pm (UTC)
Wow. This is going to be just gorgeous. It's amazing how far game graphics have come.
Does anyone have any idea when it will be released?
Jul. 24th, 2010 03:40 pm (UTC)
Oh hell yes! I'm excited, even though I've not played many Cyanide titles. If it didn't go to the Total War folks at Creative Assembly, I'm glad at least it's being done in the RTS format. :) Thanks for the shots.
Jul. 24th, 2010 03:41 pm (UTC)
I normally don't like RTS' (most of them occur at a frantic pace, and I'm sure the computer is cheating), but I will have to make an exception and pick this one up.

Games Question
Would you happen to know if one or both of the games are going to be multiplayer and playable online?
Jul. 24th, 2010 03:55 pm (UTC)
Those look great. I honestly hadn't been thinking about this, but now I'm pretty excited to play.

Wall of Ice
Yes, the wallscape in particular is stunning, although it is fairly easy to imagine Jon Snow or Tyrion trudging along the imaginative streets of the second piece of artwork.

Upon viewing a photo of the quarry in NI, where Castle Black is being constructed, couldn't help but wonder if the steep cliff wall was the primary reason for selecting that particular site.
Jul. 24th, 2010 04:04 pm (UTC)
Sounds like Civilization meets Westeros. Brilliant! :-D
Jul. 24th, 2010 04:13 pm (UTC)
Yeah, they are both really great looking. Maybe it's just me, but does the wall seem a little short in the second one?
