You Guys Are Scary Good, the Sequel

Spain
And it did not take you very damn long to figure out the second role as well.

The part of Shae, the camp follower that Bronn the sellsword finds before the battle of the Green Fork and delivers to Tyrion Lannister, will be played by the amazing SIBEL KEKILLI.

Shae needs no introduction to any Ice & Fire reader, I would imagine. If you've forgotten her, you obviously weren't paying attention, so get off the internet at once and go and reread the books. There may be a pop quiz.

Sibel Kekilli is a German actress of Turkish descent, who crashed onto the film scene in a big way in 2004 in an award-winning film called HEAD-ON, after being discovered by the casting director while shopping in a mall in Cologne. She's won both the Bambi Prize (the deer) and the Lola Award (cherry cola, L-O-L-A Lola, and if you missed that clue, you obviously haven't been listening to enough Kinks). The Lola is the "German Oscar," and Sibel has actually won it twice. She's also won the Tribeca Award and the Golden Orange Prize.

I want to say a few words about her audition, which I thought was extraordinary. A lot of beautiful young women read for Shae. The scene they were reading was the first meeting between Shae and Tyrion, in his tent on the Green Fork the night before the battle. Shae is a camp follower, a prostitute, and she is, of course, coming on to Tyrion in a big way. There is a LOT of sexual heat in the scene, as written and as played. And all of our Shaes were sexy as hell. Watching them one after another would fog up anyone's glasses.

But there's another dimension to Shae as well. She's not as practiced and hardened at this as a more seasoned pro. There's still a girl next door quality to her, a sense of vulnerability, playfulness, and, yes, innocence. And it's that quality Tyrion responds to, that quality that brings him back to Shae, and drives all that follows. He knows what she is, consciously, but down deep he wants to believe that he has found another Tysha.

All of our Shaes were hot as hell. But only a handful of them captured that other quality, maybe three out of twenty, and Sibel was the standout. It's easy to see why she has won all those awards. Watching those auditions, any red-blooded male would want to take every one of our Shae candidates to bed. But Sibel made you fall in love with her as well.

She's going to be amazing. And I can't believe you figured out who she was so fast!

Man, the boys will be hard to control over at winter-is-coming now.

I'm pretty impressed, I was looking at some of her pictures, and there is just something about her that draws you in. She's very different looking, magnetic.

Wow, the audition story sold me, I bet she'll be amazing! Shae's an important character for me. Well, to the story too of course, but I'd love for her to be portrayed accurately.

Wow. I am completely flipping out over how awesome this is... Her acting in Head-On is one of THE BEST performances I have seen from a leading actress, ever. She has a fantastic ability to go amazingly deep and intense in a role while maintaining a sense of playfulness... I would imagine perfect for Shae.

Although I would probably imagine that she'd be perfect for anyone. I really, really love Sibel Kekillli. Can't wait for her scenes with Dinklage...

Certainly a surprise that she was a pornstar prior to her serious acting career, but it's not unheard of (though damn rare) for true talent to arise from that genre. I'm thinking that modesty won't be much of an issue when the sex scenes come along...

Her film credentials are impressive. And it's probably only fair to say that people looking for images of her may not want to do it at a workplace.

But ... I couldn't help but notice that this seems to be her first English language role (well, there's something in production that may technically be first). With such a talented actress, only playing roles in German or Turkish productions might mean that her English isn't very strong.

So I kind of wonder, did her audition feature an appropriate U.K. accent? It popped into my head that maybe Shae's origins might be adjusted to accomodate her if she does speak with a notable accent (she could readily be shifted to having been born in the Free Cities or something).

On the other hand, maybe she just hadn't found a break into the U.K./American market before, and speaks with perfect fluency. But I'm kind of curious which it is.

It's been a while, but I remember interpreting Shae as a bit of an exotic anyway?

She's just a lowborn Westerosi in the books. Nothing special about her origins, otherwise it'd have been noted. Mind you, because they're nothing special, it's easy enough to just change it.

Oops. Let me wipe this egg off my face. I thought I might have been remembering it wrong, hence the question mark. After I thought it over, I decided that I was just remembering a description of her eyes and mistaking that for origins. Never hurts to re-read the series anyway. Time for a refresher. :-)

Greetings from Germany, Mr Martin!

Sibel Kekilli playing Shae - what an awesome choice!
She is on of the best German actors of her generation. Her performances in "Gegen die Wand" ("Head-On") and "Die Fremde" ("When we leave") are outstanding.
The tabloids over here scandalised her pornographic work (and were reprimanded for their coverage), but today not even the conservative press really cares anymore - she's just too good an actor... ;)
And her political stance is commendable, too.

Congratualtions, Mr Martin! You and HBO's casting team have done (and are doing) a great job.

Now, when do we get some Tywin Lannister clues? ;)

Well, this is a pleasant surprise (although Shae is supposed to be 12 years younger than her). I still didn't have seen 'Gegen die Wand' ('Head-on'), but I've recently seen her in the TV production 'Gier' (a two-parter about the mechanics of greed where rich and not-so-rich people entrust all of their money to a treacherous broker; she plays an young actress who is hired by the broker to 'entertain' his clients - it is fun too watch her there).

But her performance in 'Die Fremde' is really great. She plays the lead role, the elder daughter of a Turkish pair which immigrated to Germany, and married her off back into Turkey (she really can also play pretty asexual stuff). When she leaves her husband and returns to Germany things starts to escalate, as her whole family is under pressure by the Turkish community to settle this improper situation - leading, of course, to an escalation in the end.

And her own biography concerning the sex business (in its broader sense) has a certain resemblance in the tragedy of Shae. I mean the fact that the 'Bild Zeitung' revealing her involvement in porn movies (which, of course, were afterwards pretty successful), lead to her family breaking off contact with her.

In any case, this Shae is going to be really good, not just to look upon, but as an actress. And you really need a good actress to play Shae.

Peter Dinklage is about to start REALLY loving his job, no? She looks great, perfect smile for Shae.

Gegen die Wand, Fatih Akim
wow, thats news! I'm from german and when reading "an award-winning film called HEAD-ON" something ringed familiar. Then I googled Sibel and found out its "Gegen die Wand", one of the most amazing german movies in decades by german-turkish cult-regisseur Fatih Akim! This is really good news, Fatih Akim and Gegen die Wand are really some high references for any movie-interested german.

is truly impressive. She seems like she can be quite flexible in the roles she takes on.

Sibel Kekilli and Contraversy
In what weird alternate universe is it contraversial to say that violence against women is bad?

Re: Sibel Kekilli and Contraversy
From her wikipedia entry: In December 2006, at an anti-domestic violence event of the Turkish newspaper Hürriyet in Berlin, she stated "I have experienced myself that physical and psychological violence is seen as normal in Muslim families. Unfortunately violence belongs to the culture in Islam." This caused the Turkish consul general to leave the room.

There is a link there to the original German article on the wikipedia page.
