News on the HBO Series

Morocco
There has been all sorts of news on the HBO series during the month that I was attending worldcon and travelling in Australia.

I am probably the last person in the world to upload these... but for any of you who don't watch TRUE BLOOD, and have somehow missed these elsewhere... here's the new GAME OF THRONES trailer that HBO premiered before the TRUE BLOOD season finale, and a short "behind the scenes" feature as well.

THE RAVEN

IN PRODUCTION

Parris and I saw these on her laptop in Sydney, in the middle of the Australian night, the night they aired, but it was not until we returned home that we were able to see them on a full-size screen. I hope you enjoyed them as much as we did.

The clips will be old news for most of you, I know. So here's a few tidbits about the series that might be new to you.

We have a couple new castings to announce. The part of Rickon Stark will be played by ART PARKINSON, a Belfast native son. Rickon will be older than he is in the books, but still the yougest Stark. And MIA SOTIRIOU has been cast as the maegi Mirri Maz Duur. Also, a small change for Elyes Gabel. He will now he playing Rakharo rather than Jhogo. It was felt that Jhogo and Drogo sounded too much alike when spoken aloud, and might cause confusion.

Lots more going on besides, but I'm way out of the loop at the moment. So much to catch up on after a month on the road.

Speaking of aging...
...there's a question that's been sort of bothering me since I re-read A Game of Thrones : obviously HBO is going to need to age Daenerys a bit (I don't even they would dare have a 13-years-old girl playing, hum, "monster and maiden" with Jason Momoa), but how much ? Obviously Emilia Clarke can hardly pass for a tween, but if they make Dany an adult (for Westerosi value of adult, aka "over 17" for the nobility) I think we would lose a part of what makes this character interesting.

Of course, it would also be a lot easier, and not only for Dany - Robb's part in A Clash of Kings would be hard for a 15-years old. But still, making them all twentysomethings rather than teens would be a big departure from the book. How do you feel about it ?

Re: Speaking of aging...
In the original pilot script, Daenerys is said to be 15 years old (as opposed to 13 in the book). We don't know how old Emilia Clarke is, but based on her recent appearance in DOCTORS (a UK soap) I don't think she's much more than 20 at the outside, probably younger (and certainly younger than Tamzin Merchant who was originally cast in the role at 23, although she looks very young for her age).

Both Robb and Jon, 14 at the start of AGoT, are now 17 in the script, but played by 23-year-olds (maybe 24 by now). Hardly unusual for Hollywood, especially given that people have to grow up fast and don't look their best in Westeros.

Due to my lack of HBO, I had not seen the trailer, actually. But I love it very much!

Thanks for posting, I saw the True Blood finale but on my DVR and it wasn't recorded, so I for one hadn't seen it yet.

I got a bit of the chills watching the preview, I am so, so looking forward to it!

Looks more wonderful than I'd have thought - and I love the books. I'm glad even you think they got it right. With very few exceptions, I dislike books turned into movies, series, etc. This certainly looks like it will be a major exception to that idea. As Phippsie would say, "Good on you, George!".

There's a second behind-the-scenes featurette as well, on set and production design:

I don't think I've ever been this excited to watch television.
Anticipation can be very frustrating sometimes...
