Keep your day job. Use it as inspiration and a wellspring of resources. If your writing is good and the story line hits a chord and you get lucky with the timing and the appetite of the audience then you too can be a financially successful fantasy novelist.

Let your writing be your mistress until she proves to be more reliable than your wife (job). You will still need to invest resources into her needs(Clarion courses, etc.). Otherwise she will leave you in time.

That's my take, but I don't have the passion of a true artist. Or the intellect of someone who can graduate with a law degree.
