Coming to LA

Looks like I will be coming out to LA in early January, to talk about the HBO show at the TCA.

That one is for television critics only, I'm afraid... but I'm looking to set up a couple of public events while I am in town. Watch this space. We will probably do a signing, most likely somewhere in the San Fernando Valley. And our friend Lodengarl, founder and prince of the Brotherhood Without Banners, is going to come down from the Bay Area to organize a BWB event the same day. Details when we have 'em... but angelenos, mark down January 9 on your calendars.

(Might have an exciting announcement that day as well. Maybe two. But don't quote me on that).

Please don't be messing with us again. That would be so uncool I don't even know if there's a way to describe it in human terms.

Re: Please
Completely agree.

I'd love it if you came to Vroman's in Pasadena. It's my local bookstore and the largest independent bookstore in Southern California. I can't wait for the new series (and the new book) ;)
Dec. 20th, 2010 05:56 pm (UTC)
I have to second the desire to see you at Vroman's, if not this trip, than another one sometime. Vroman's is a truly wonderful bookstore. I always feel good about spending my money there!

Congrats on season 1 !!
I only wish you could make it to the Northwest as well. Can't wait to see the characters walk into existence via HBO. As to your announcement, no pressure from this fan, encouragement perhaps, hope certainly. Do what must be done, for it needs doing ;-)

Re: Congrats on season 1 !!
Seconded! Please do come to the Northwest if possible, in the future! That would be fantastic! Portland would love to have you, and I'm sure you have a avid (slash, you know, rabid) fan-base here. Plus Portland is nice and laid back and has great coffee and Powells.

In regard to your earlier post, thank you very much for updating us- it's very kind of you to do so.

!!! I am in the Valley!!! Best. News. Ever!
Dec. 17th, 2010 02:42 am (UTC)
I'll be at the BWB gathering for sure. Lodey, if you read this, drop me a line and I'll help with planning if you need it.
Dec. 17th, 2010 03:23 am (UTC)
does the announcement involve the show or books?
Dec. 17th, 2010 04:01 am (UTC)
I am so excited I am screaming like a 10 year old girl!

I WONDER what those two possible announcements might be...

Please let the exciting announcement be that the book is done... (crossing fingers and saying a little prayer to the book gods of the universe).
Dec. 17th, 2010 04:20 am (UTC)
announcement... well, there's only one announcement that matters, so how can there be two? :-) something about dancing...I hope
Dec. 17th, 2010 05:22 am (UTC)
Oh please, oh please
Let it be ADWD publishing date, what a way to start off a New Year that would be!

By the way Mr. Martin can you recommend any good steampunk novels? I am considering eBooking "Boneshaker", have heard some good things about it. Just finished Joe Abercrombie's First Law trilogy (loved it) - and needing a change of pace.

Merry Christmas!

LA BwB Gathering - Come Join the Fandom Fun
Please refer to the thread on the A Song of Ice and Fire message board: http://asoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/topic/46733-la-bwb-time-to-gather-with-george/ for updates and plans.

We are organizing a Sunday, Jan 9th BwB evening event in the San Fernando Valley. Head over to the above thread, put in your RSVP, give suggestions, and help make this a great event - conversation, food, drink, relaxation and contemplation will be in order.

The BwB has always been an open fan club for those that want to have a good time, meet new people, and enjoy fandom the way it was meant to be enjoyed. Looking forward to a great turnout in LA!

Re: LA BwB Gathering - Come Join the Fandom Fun
Lodey- I passed this on to Erik and Tav... I think I found a venue. I met this guy whose wife had a baby at my hospital. He's a recently retired NFL coach (Patriots!) who opened a New Haven style pizza place in Burbank. Don't we know someone who likes pizza and football?

I checked it out with my family tonight and the pizza is really good. http://www.caminitipizza.com

What do you think?

The Finish Line
I hope "A Game of Thrones" runs at least seven seasons. HBO really dropped the ball when they let Deadwood, Rome and Carnivale end without proper finales. I still can't believe David Milich dropped Deadwood so he could do John From Cincinatti.

It sure looks like groundbreaking stuff. I'm a big fan of Lena Headey's work on Connor Chronicles and Sean Bean is the biggest actor in England.

But you must feel like its kind of a race now to get the other books done. I look forward to seeing what you have to say when the show is in its last year. It's possible that the series could get to the conclusion before the last two books are out. I know it's still far off but I can't stop wondering what's gonna happen.

As long as the show is the best show it can be and the books are given careful revision, it doesn't really matter which one makes it to the finish line first. I'd rather have to wait another ten years for book seven than have it be disappointing because it wasn't given enough time for revision.

I guess the race is on...

Oh no!d
Of course you are coming to LA when I am deployed! Drat! Perhaps you will return to the area some time this summer!
Dec. 17th, 2010 10:36 am (UTC)
You're Done!
I'm 20 years old, and I've been following you blog for almost 7 years, literally a third of my life. I never ever have felt the need to comment on anything, but I had to today. I think I know your posts well enough now that this is it. You're done! You must be looking it over and deciding to announce it on the 9th, but I'm willing to bet you're done now. I don't know why I'm so certain, but I just have never been more excited. Can't wait until it hits the stores! Send me the manuscript maybe! : ) lol. Awesome work!

Just as filming wraps in Belfast we have had the heaviest snowfall in Norn Iron for 25 years.

I hope a few enterprising HBO cameramen went to the Mournes to shoot some footage...

Merry Christmas George.

Re: Can't wait to see you!
George will sing?
Dec. 18th, 2010 12:27 am (UTC)
Re: Can't wait to see you!
George only sings when very drunk, and then only old TV theme songs... or as much of them as he remembers.

The show is looking unbelievably awesome. Of course everyone is hoping that the exciting announcement can be only one thing. I am hoping it is that one thing as well but I don't think anyone noticed the "But don't quote me on that" or have chosen to completely ignore it. Should be interesting. :)

2 announcements...
One is no doubt that you have rescheduled your aborted visit to Pepe's Pizza from a few years back..... the other??? If the other is what we are all thinking I may have to celebrate with a Pepe's large fresh clam pizza all for myself. Then I will re read....again.

L.A. Trip
Hey, George,

Any chance a few of us internet fans can get early tickets to the L.A. signing kind of like you did for the students down in San Diego?

Re: L.A. Trip
The bookstore makes those determinations.

"[w]hen A DANCE WITH DRAGONS is finished, I will post that news here. The moment I finish the book, I will log on and make the announcement. You guys will be the third ones to know, right after Parris and my publishers."

Calm down, folks. The announcement he makes at some press conference that he simply teases us with is not the announcement that Dance is complete. He's already promised us that we're going to hear about that completion before anyone else, so whatever these announcements are, they're not the big one.

I trust that George is as good as his words, and I am content to abide. The Sistine Chapel took a hell of a lot longer to paint.

When in January? I was planning to go home to Nashville in January to see my family (because getting Christmas off as a Disneyland cast member takes like..10-20 years seniority), so I'd like to schedule around you!
