Coming to LA II

Plans for my January visit to LA continue to come together.

The signing has now been set. I will be autographing books at VROMAN'S, an independent bookstore in Pasadena, on Sunday, January 9, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

(The event is not yet listed on their website, but I assume it will be up soon. My thanks to them for putting this together on such short notice. Usually signings like this are set up months in advance)

Given the limited time window we have for this event, I may not be speaking or answering questions, as I usually do at bookstore appearances. It all depends on how many people turn up. If the crowd is large, I may need to start scribbling right away to make certain that everyone gets a book signed. I don't like anyone to go away disappointed... but my schedule is such that I will probably need to be out of there at 7:00 pm, hell or high water.

Looking forward to meeting some of you there. (However briefly)

Dec. 22nd, 2010 09:34 pm (UTC)
Yay, I will be there :)
Dec. 22nd, 2010 09:42 pm (UTC)
Hopefully you can make it to Northern California eventually.
Dec. 25th, 2010 08:53 am (UTC)
yes! George, there are many of us up here who would love to see you...

I work at a small independent bookstore/cafe in Sonoma County, and if GRRM was going to speak and/or sign books with fifty miles of us, several of my coworkers and I would probably die of excitement before we made it to the place :)
Dec. 22nd, 2010 09:52 pm (UTC)
Wish I could be there!
Dec. 22nd, 2010 10:32 pm (UTC)
That's like.. a mile from me, so I'll definitely stop by. Looking forward to it.
Dec. 22nd, 2010 11:45 pm (UTC)
Of Course I'll just miss it.
I'm going home (SoCal) for Christmas, and will be back in Dallas in January.

Vromans is a great little bookstore in Pasadena, used to be my hood. I recommend parking in the back, off of Oak Knoll (crosses Colorado Blvd between Vroman's and Target). If a lot of people are showing up, park in the Target lot directly east of Vroman's parking (also off Oak Knoll - http://bit.ly/g2jRLl), then find the Vromans entrance in the back.
Dec. 22nd, 2010 11:46 pm (UTC)
Maybe I'm an oddball, but I'd rather hear you talk / read than get a book signed. If there's only enough time for one or the other, cut the signing, not the reading!
Dec. 23rd, 2010 12:08 am (UTC)
Anne Rice just had a signing there a few days ago. Sounds like a cool bookstore. Wish I lived in the area. (Except for the fact that I hate LA.)
Dec. 23rd, 2010 01:36 am (UTC)
My friend was at that book signing!

I will definitely be there George! So excited!! First ever book signing.

Does it have to be a new book? My copy of A Game of Thrones is a little dented but should still look good. Should I take all 4 of them? Agh can't wait!
Dec. 23rd, 2010 02:53 am (UTC)
You can bring as many books as you like, but if the crowd is large I may not be able to sign all of them. All depends on how long the line is.

I don't know Vroman's policies as regards bringing in old books. Most stores allow it. It is usually considered good form to buy at least one new book from the store hosting the event, however. These things require a lot of time and trouble. If you have all the Ice & Fire books, you could always pick up one of my many other titles -- a Wild Cards book, SONGS OF LOVE AND DEATH, SONGS OF THE DYING EARTH, FEVRE DREAM, whatever.
Dec. 23rd, 2010 03:01 am (UTC)
Good suggestion, thanks! I will see you there. :)
Dec. 23rd, 2010 04:41 pm (UTC)
other books
Hey George,

I haven't read any of the books you suggested (you have written them as well? you machine!). If they are as good as ASOIAF I will definitely buy them in store!

See you there!

Re: other books
I've read everything he's written, except Wildcard and a couple short stories I haven't been able to find. There are a shocking number of masterpieces in the bunch, some even better (IMO) than ASoIaF.

Dreamsongs (his collection) is a great place to start if you're beginning your trek through his back catalog.

Los Angeles is beautiful. Only those who don't know her would speak ill of such a wondrous place.

Also, it seems unlikely that anyone person could hate all 498.3 square miles of a city. Or is it the 4,752 square miles of Los Angeles county that encompass the seat of your hate?

In any case, Pasadena is its own city within the County of Los Angeles, if it's the enormous city you hate, you should be safe there.

I'm so glad the icon of you with the baby tiger is back.
Dec. 23rd, 2010 03:21 am (UTC)
When are you coming to beautiful Columbus, Ohio? I'll bring you cupcakes!
Dec. 23rd, 2010 03:42 am (UTC)
Vroman's is a terrific bookstore, I think you'll be pleased. I have noticed that the GRRM books always have the "employee recommends" cards beneath them- which is endearing, don't you think?

AND they carry Peadar's book. Also endearing.
Dec. 23rd, 2010 04:00 am (UTC)
CANNOT wait :D I'll probably be there with a half dozen girlfriends. Looking forward just getting to see you in person if it ends up being too crowded to get something signed.

Any chance of maybe a new Ice and Fire sample for Christmas??? I'm in Seattle, so I hope to call the store the day after your signing and see if they have any extras that they would consider shipping. I haven't picked up the Vance tribute book yet.

Cheers to you and yours!
Dec. 23rd, 2010 06:57 pm (UTC)
can I bring my copy of A Dance with Dragons to the signing ?
Dec. 23rd, 2010 07:43 pm (UTC)
I'll come to any readings that you have close to me!
Dec. 24th, 2010 12:53 am (UTC)
Can't wait! See you and other fans there.

Any plans for a Los Angeles pizza crawl?

Dec. 24th, 2010 10:00 pm (UTC)
Man. If I was in the area, it would be the perfect opportunity to buy a third copy of A Game of Thrones. (I've bought it twice already, yes... and I keep giving it away! Others need to read the series, after all.)
Dec. 25th, 2010 06:56 am (UTC)
Every time I see LA I get all excited until I remember that LA also means Los Angeles.

I don't hold much hope of you stopping by Louisiana any time soon, so hopefully we'll just happen to be going to the same convention one of these days.

Merry Christmas George!!!

Merry Christmas to my Favorite Author!
Hope you and your family are having a Merry Christmas! Rest that pen, A Dance of Dragons can be finished in 2011, just in time for someone to get it for me as a Christmas present!

Come back to Canada. Just once more because I couldn't get to your last visit unfortunately, so you should find an excuse to come back for a book signing to Toronto or something!
Dec. 28th, 2010 04:54 am (UTC)
Are you on suicide watch George? no blog on the giants loss or even the jets...are you busy killing off more of Our favorite ASOIF charachters? :) I've got a graph showing the correlation between Giants losses and Stark die-offs.... hang in there...:)

So thrilled that you are able to work Vroman's into your schedule. It's an excellent bookstore with an amazing history. Notably, Vroman's donated and delivered books to Japanese Americans in internment camps during WWII. Though their truck was fired upon, they continued to return with books.

Since you're on a very tight schedule -- I recommend to your fans El Portal, a Mexican restaurant just across the way down Arcade Alley. Good food, amazing tequila selection and margaritas.
Jan. 4th, 2011 06:42 am (UTC)
I second the recommendation on El Portal
Their Cochinita Pibil is...yummy.

Graphic audio
Sorry this is off topic but didn't know where else to put it

I stumbled across this http://www.graphicaudio.net/ or actually a CD version of one of there dramatizations on amazon. I downloaded the book that I had already read and its better than a movie of the book because everything is exactly the YOU picture it and it has everything a movie does (except the visual aspect of course)

this post is just one of your rabid fans (of all your work not just ASOIAF) who would love to listen to your amazingly wonderful stories done in this format.
Dec. 29th, 2010 11:48 pm (UTC)
Would be nice to see you come sign in my home state of West Virginia, we never have anyone major come around these parts.

So Excited!
I'm so excited! My heart started to beat fast when I read the title of this post. :) I'm bringing all of my hard copy ASOIAF books(one of them I have in an e-book format) and now I'll finally have the opportunity to pick up Wild Cards. :) Looking forward to it!

Will you be willing to sign my nook? I have A Feast for Crows in an e-book format on it.... :)
Jan. 5th, 2011 01:33 pm (UTC)
See you Sunday!
So jazzed right now! Just checked my schedule and I'm off work Sunday, so the bf and I will be making the drive to Pasadena to see you! (And I'm even giving up his Grandma's famous tacos...my biggest weakness aside from your books!)
