Nightmare Before Christmas

Spain
Hello again.

Sorry for the long silence. It was not by choice.

I've just lived through the Christmas from hell. Most of it was spent in a bed in St. Vincent's Hospital in Santa Fe. Parris took me in to the hospital emergency room on the morning of Christmas Eve, and they admitted me almost immediately after diagnosis. It seems I had a raging e-coli infection of my urinary tract. Urosepsis, they called it. So I spent Xmas and the days after in a hospital bed, hooked up to catheters and IV tubes, getting some heavy duty doses of antibiotics and some of the other wondrous products of modern medicine.

The good news: the antibiotics worked, and knocked out the infection. I was released a few hours before the end of 2010, and have been recuperating at home ever since. I'm still taking oral antibiotics and various other pills, and will be for a while, but the worst is past... and boy, am I glad to be be out of the hospital.

I was weak as a kitten when first released, and I still tire easily... but I'm stronger every day. Strong enough so that, yes, I still intend to make the trip to LA for the TCA. And yes, I will still be doing the signing at Vroman's... though it remains to be seen how taxing that will be for me. If you're attending, I would ask you to go easy on me and only bring a book or two for signing, and not everything I have ever written. I have to watch my strength.

The bad news: well, obviously, there's nothing like a week in a hospital bed to kick a hole in your plans and good intentions. I did hope to have some exciting announcements to make at TCA, but that won't be happening now. But hey, all the great stuff HBO will be rolling out about the GAME OF THRONES series should provide excitement enough.

I don't want to trivilize what I've just gone through. I'm a generally healthy guy, and this was the most serious bout of illness I have suffered in decades, and the first time I have seen the inside of a hospital (emergency room visits aside) since 1973. But I am on the mend now, and I expect to be back to my old self by the end of the month at the latest, and back to work well before that.

Until then, though, I probably won't be posting much here.

Thanks to all of you -- friends, fans, readers -- for your understanding and good wishes.

Ouch
In all sincerity, I am truly sorry you had to spend your holidays, thusly. I suppose it happens to us all at one time or another. But it is good you are home with your family and friends.
However, just a thought, maybe instead of traveling to LA and everywhere else, you could, I dunno, finish up Dance. Jus sayin'...

I Wish You a Swift Recovery
I couldn't believe what I was reading, and I couldn't believe that it took me and extra day or two to see this post. I'm so, so glad you're all right amigo.

You know...some crazy, wise man once told me that you can never repay those who believed in you your whole life...only pay it forward and be good to those who believe in you now. I've not met someone who is better at that than you, George, and I do hope you're able to cash in on some good karma and secure a swift and smooth recovery.

My thoughts and prayers to you and Parris during this jump-start to 2011. As always, if there's anything that I can do, please let me know.

Get well soon!
Hope your health and strength return swiftly. Looking forward to reading A Dance with Dragons sometime within the not too distant future - but not until you've finished it and made it the best it can be. All the best.

Get well soon! And a heartfelt "Thank you!" to Parris! :)
Looking back at older posts regarding flu or similar sickbed-stories from you, I feel that we all should thank Parris for bringing you to hospital. Somehow I can't believe that you would have gone willingly on your own! ;)
While of course it's hard to find something positive in such experiences, at least hopefully the docs checked you through thoroughly while you where there - even a impressively healthy person like you (1973 - I was minus eight years back then! ;) ) should get that done now and then.

Take your time, get a rest and never forget: Those, who were willing to wait for years without grumbling, will fully understand and wait another month (or two... ).
And those who grumbled before, can't be helped, anyway! ;)

Best regards,
Martin

Get well soon!
Please take care and I hope you feel 100% again soon. As much as I want to read the Dance, I want you to be healthy and happy so much more!
Your books have brought me great enjoyment over many re-reads, thank you so much.

Feel better and take it easy as you can this month.

This should be a very exciting year for you. While you were well-known to say the least before, I expect this year may place your name on the lips of viewers all over the world on Monday mornings.

Happ(ier)y Holidays to you and Parris. Now that I am back working in the city instead of White Plains, I hope to get a book signed from you if ya ever come around these parts. Definitely the old copy of GoT paperback that started this all for me a decade or so ago and maybe ADwD newly purchased hardcover as well ;). Barring such luck, I'll settle for a new paperback with HBO ad ;)

Speaking of HBO, did you any one else hear about the mid Nov focus group in NY. Was told those of us selected were to get first spots but no news yet.

Best wishes,
Dan

take care and get well
There are a lot of nasty bugs out there at the moment so don't get a relapse by trying to do too much too soon

(written from sickbed after doing exactly that....)

Even with the infection and hospital stay, you still had a better new years than Tom Coughlin. As a Raiders fan, I have nothing but delicious haterade for everyone who doesn't wear black and silver, but I can sympathize on the coaching woes. Feel better in regards to both the infection and the Giants' heartbreaking (yet inevitable) late season collapse.
