Stop the Spoilers!

Just a reminder... for me and Ty as much as for you folks...

With the HBO series scheduled to debut on April 17, a lot of new people may be finding their way here. People who have seen the show, but have never read the books.

With that in mind, I think we have to put a lid on all spoilers in the comments (and for that matter, in my own posts). Yes, I know that GAME OF THRONES was published fifteen years ago... but for those who have not read it, it will be brand new, and I want some of the twists and turns and deaths in the book to come as a surprise to new readers in 2011, just as they did for my original readership in 1996.

I have not been consistent about this in the past, I know, even the very recent past... but from this point on, Ty and I are going to try and be more vigilant. All comments that include even glancing references to deaths, maimings, and major plot twists will henceforth be removed without posting. I respectfully request your understanding and cooperation.

Here's hoping the show leads to tons of new readers who are just as shocked by the twists as I was the first time I read the books. c:

I hope that HBO kept that seen where the aliens come down and transform Gandalf into a giant fighting robot.

A giant fighting robot that can transport itself to an island and then off the island, then back on the island...

I'm almost done with the first book but have about 200 pages to go. I don't even look at the HBO site much, I'm afraid it will taint my own impressions as I read.

Darth Vader's his father?!?!?
I must admit, I'm envious of those who will come to your works from scratch, and get to go through the discovery phases, finding new things out. Sure, I still love re-reading the books, but that first time? Wow.

Re: Darth Vader's his father?!?!?
I'll never forget, after finishing "Game of Thrones" and insisting my wife read it (she likes Fantasy, but doesn't read much on her own and only reads a few of the books I BEG her to read) the WEEKS of agony I endured waiting for her to get through it so I could talk to somebody about it. None of my friends had read it at the time.

Good idea. My husband is rolling his eyes as I re-read your books because I keep gasping but then I won't tell him what I just read because he doesn't want me to spoil the series for him!

We went through the same thing with True Blood.

Very good idea. The brilliant twists and turns of the story should not be ruined for new readers.

Anyone who has not read your series by this late stage is an uncivilized brute, and should not be made welcome on this (not a) Blog!

Oh, MAN... you mean, I can't tell them that Rand finds out that he actually has an evil triplet and that Egwene is black ajah and that Min is actually a man?!

Feb. 8th, 2011 07:23 pm (UTC)
I'd pay major money to Brandon if he'd actually end the series this way. X-D

I wonder if it's going to be weird sharing ASOIF with people who haven't read the books, and only know it from the HBO perspective. One would hope that they will go out and read the books! :)
Feb. 8th, 2011 07:01 pm (UTC)
Copy that!

I hope it's not out of line to use these comments to suggest that we fans of a hyper nature might convene elsewhere? I just now went hunting for LJ communities where I could get the spoilerific stuff out of my system and found game_thrones - maybe there are other readers here who could point out their favorite ASOIAF discussion spots?

asoiaf.westeros.org has a board dedicated to the TV series (including a spoiler section and a non-spoiler one) and another for the books, which seems to work quite well.

That's not so much a spoiler as a necessary disclaimer. I would really not want someone to read these books on the expectation of a light and fluffy read!

Expanding the Family
George, this post kind of got me excited. It's great to know that new people will have the chance to enjoy your books. I feel kind of smug because I know I've known about them from the beginning. It's almost like when your favorite local band goes mainstream. Except you were already a big deal. Just a bigger deal now.

A relative of mine had been telling me for the longest time to start reading Game of Thrones. I finally broke down when I found out about the HBO Miniseries as books are generally better than TV & I wanted to have the look and feel of the characters in my head prior to watching them on my screen. To make a short story long I just finished book 4 last night - I Can Not Wait for book 5. The SB is over & we've got 7 months before the Jets are going to play a meaningful game......Please & respectfully understand what I'm saying. Thank you.

All I can say is good luck. I do hope for the sake of all new viewers and readers they don't find out.

And it's unfortunate that I occasionally see jerks on youtube and elsewhere who deliberately print in the comments one sentence of spoilers. Nothing else. Just "blank happens to blank". Jerks. Ah, trolls. We need a troll hunter.

I got really excited for a couple days, because I thought the show was really close to coming out. Then I remembered that there is another month between February and April. Then I got sad again.

I am unbelievably excited about seeing the show. My only real concern is The track record hbo has developed with some other big series. I am referring to their decision to cancel Rome and Deadwood. I felt both series had some potential that had yet to be tapped into when they were seemingly cut short. The second season of Rome felt a bit rushed to me when I found out that they were supposedly cut short due to the show's immensely huge budget. I could easily see Ice and Fire running down a similar road. I don't believe everything I hear, but I did read that the budget of the first episode of GoT surpassed that of Rome. Although I think I would be adequately satisfied if they at least got up to A Feast for Crows. But I am probably getting a little ahead of myself.
Feb. 8th, 2011 09:13 pm (UTC)
Must add Carnivale to the list as well. Thankfully we still have Knauff kicking around with Starz' excellent and gritty Spartacus series.

I felt the same way about Rome's second season. Also Carnivale's. That was a major betrayal of HBO to a loyal fan base. Granted, each episode cost a million or a mil plus to film, but it doesn't change the fact a wonderful show was killed before it hit its prime.

Ser, no spoilers from this one, you can count on that!

I am reminded of when the season 6a opener of sopranos was spoiled the day of by a troll on a forum similar to this venue. I am still getting over it.

Can't wait for the next Shae (gorgeous Sibel Kekilli) appearance in a teaser! Has she been interviewed anywhere on her upcoming role? She is so perfect for the part, IMO the best talent cast thus far.

Please ser don't hold out on us if you know of any Sibel AGOT footage.

Mood: Hopeful ;)
Feb. 9th, 2011 02:41 am (UTC)
The most recent Sibel Kekilli article I've seen is here, and the writer briefly mentions GOT but Kekilli doesn't say anything about it.

I love her too and I'm happy she was cast, but keep in mind that unless they've expanded her role a lot, Shae is hardly in the first book at all - one Tyrion chapter, that's it. If (when) a second season is greenlighted, we should be hearing more from her.
