No. Sorry. Not done yet.

I'm close, though. Watch this space. When the book is done, you will read it here.

original cover 2006

Meanwhile... there is news. Big news. The end is in sight, at long long last, and we're close enough so that my editors and publishers at Bantam Spectra have set an actual publication date.

revised cover 2007

A DANCE WITH DRAGONS will be in your favorite bookstore on

TUESDAY, JULY 12, 2011

new cover 2009

Yes, I know. You've all seen publication dates before: dates in 2007, 2008, 2009. None of those were ever hard dates, however. Most of them... well, call it wishful thinking, boundless optimism, cockeyed dreams, honest mistakes, whatever you like.

This date is different. This date is real.

Barring tsunamis, general strikes, world wars, or asteroid strikes, you will have the novel in your hands on July 12. I hope you like it.

((For what it's worth, the book's a monster. Think A STORM OF SWORDS))

final cover? 2011

The dragons are coming. Prepare to dance.

And hey... thanks for waiting.

The Wait....
Hi George, congratulations of your completion of A Dance with Dragons. I know you get tons of feedback on here, but if you happen to brush by mine, I wanted to say thank you. I have not been reading since 1996, but started several years ago and have been excited to read this book for years. I was on Amazon a while ago and became appalled by the negative comments regarding the extended publication dates for your book. A similar reception was given to Patrick Rothfuss, who just released his book 2 days ago. Anyhow, I feel lucky to have authors like you and Pat, providing me with wonderful narratives that I can look forward to, pick up at midnight, and stay up reading them for days. I cherish those books and always try to find more. However, the search is not always easy, and A Song of Ice and Fire is unparalleled for me. I am glad it is finished, but more importantly, I am grateful for your writing abilities and your wonderful cast of unforgettable characters. Like you suggested, the time in between has allowed me to find so many wonderful authors and read your series a few more times through. The wait makes it all that much better. I can't wait to read it and I am happy for you. Take care

I hope you feel good about it, after all the fans bitching and editors/publishers breathing down your neck, I'm sure. I hope it's something you can look back fondly on, someday.

Amazing news. Congratulations Mr. Martin. I wonder if I should start reading Feast or start the series from the beginning (on audio and read Feast in print). Or perhaps I should wait until this book is REALLY released? It has been so many many years. I didn't read the last book as I wanted to wait for this one to be finished first, and because the last audiobook was ruined by a poor reader! Please, please do a remake of AFfC and I'm really hoping and praying that A Dance With Dragons is read by the one and only ROY DOTRICE!!!
P.S. I will happily pay 4 or even 5 credits at audible for a remake of book 4!!!

Thank you!
I just started reading last November on a complete whim (bookstore here on campus was offering up ASoIaF as a good book for "People With Post-Potter Depressive Disorder"--I kid you not; I love Potter, but I also quickly grew to adore Westeros and your storytelling, and of course they are really very different from each other) and couldn't bear to finish A FEAST FOR CROWS, knowing that ADwD might never come out--I only forced myself to finish the last chapter of AFfC and put Westeros down a few weeks ago. And now in four months we'll get to read ADwD!

Time for a reread of the series--once my friend finishes borrowing my copy of AGoT, that is. :)

Thank you again for such great books; I grew up on YA fantasy (I'm a young'un at 19) like Tamora Pierce and Philip Pullman and somehow never realized there was a whole realm of adult fantasy out there too until I stumbled across AGoT those 4 or 5 months ago now. ASoIaF has been a sheer delight to read and has really reignited my joy for reading fiction that a few years of reading Marx and Durkheim and Foucault all the time for school just can't fulfill. :) Many happy returns to you and Parris, in all your endeavors, and thank you again.

We should be thanking YOU! The fact that you can be focusing on your writing despite all internet bitching over the years, all of your obligations to conventions and now the show, and that you still continue to be so kind, gracious, informative and personal with your fans on LiveJournal? That's amazing. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!
