No. Sorry. Not done yet.

I'm close, though. Watch this space. When the book is done, you will read it here.

original cover 2006

Meanwhile... there is news. Big news. The end is in sight, at long long last, and we're close enough so that my editors and publishers at Bantam Spectra have set an actual publication date.

revised cover 2007

A DANCE WITH DRAGONS will be in your favorite bookstore on

TUESDAY, JULY 12, 2011

new cover 2009

Yes, I know. You've all seen publication dates before: dates in 2007, 2008, 2009. None of those were ever hard dates, however. Most of them... well, call it wishful thinking, boundless optimism, cockeyed dreams, honest mistakes, whatever you like.

This date is different. This date is real.

Barring tsunamis, general strikes, world wars, or asteroid strikes, you will have the novel in your hands on July 12. I hope you like it.

((For what it's worth, the book's a monster. Think A STORM OF SWORDS))

final cover? 2011

The dragons are coming. Prepare to dance.

And hey... thanks for waiting.

Excellent news! :-)

The 2009 cover (silver with the sword on it) is still the final cover design for the UK edition of the book, according to Voyager's website.

Happy birthday to me!
My birthday is the 12th. I've been waiting patiently for this book for so long, it's great to know that you have recognized my patience and decided to make it a birthday present. Thank you!

Thank you for timely reply
Good things in life are worth waiting for-I let Twitter know what the scoop is. Phil and Live for Films is a good guy, he certainly pays attention.

Dang publishers, always blabbing this and that!

Take your time, actually.

I think this one's going to be the watershed.

Have a good day, to you and yours!

Glad there is a set date now. We have the series to keep us going until then which is great! I personally think that the last cover should be the final one! Can't wait until July!! xx

For those people who're currently working their way through The Crippled God and The Wise Man's Fear but want to immediately get on their epic A Song of Ice and Fire reread, I STRONGLY suggest you head to your local library and check out the audiobooks. The first three books are read by Roy Dotrice and they are /awesome/. Frankly, I will be disappointed with Tyrion in HBO's A Game of Thrones doesn't sound like Tyrion as voiced by Roy Dotrice. That's Tyrion for me forever! Anyway, they're completely unabridged and run 30 to 40 hours per book, which basically means that they make the perfect listening companion for a person with a drive in to work and a drive home every day, or a long ride on the subway or bus.

I may have to wait for the dragons but I'm already dancing over the news!

And thank you so much for being kind enough to share so much with us here.

What a great bit of news to start the day. I'll need to get started now on rereading books 1-4 and also being insufferable with all my friends to (re)read them as well! And with the tv series is coming as surely as winter this is the Year of GRRM if there ever was one! Congrats on your successes, you've earned them!

That's definitely a GREAT new. Though I am gonna have to wait a little bit longer for the spanish translation, but I guess this time I won't wait and I'll try to read it in English.

That's fantastic George. We were all looking forward to this anouncement.
Greetings from Spain.

The Words I have been waiting for (or at least, their precursor)

(until it's actually finished anyways!)

I think I am going to start my 5ish year wait for book 6 now... It's probably easier to keep the same level of nervous anticipation for the next decade rather than suffer the rollercoaster.

Thank you for the good news!
And it's the day before my birthday - what a present! Thank you, George!
Mar. 3rd, 2011 04:38 pm (UTC)
Yay! I love the new cover!
Mar. 3rd, 2011 04:38 pm (UTC)
Aw, I kinda like the "original 2006" cover which would match the other 3 mass market paperbacks so far. Oh well, the cover isn't what's important. I read the first two books in a flash and now I've been kinda slacking off on A Storm of Swords. Now that I at least know when the next book is coming, I can pace myself to finish the remaining books and then I'll be able to go get the next one!
Mar. 3rd, 2011 04:38 pm (UTC)
I will be moved and ready for a new book in July. :D Thanks, George.
