No. Sorry. Not done yet.

I'm close, though. Watch this space. When the book is done, you will read it here.

original cover 2006

Meanwhile... there is news. Big news. The end is in sight, at long long last, and we're close enough so that my editors and publishers at Bantam Spectra have set an actual publication date.

revised cover 2007

A DANCE WITH DRAGONS will be in your favorite bookstore on

TUESDAY, JULY 12, 2011

new cover 2009

Yes, I know. You've all seen publication dates before: dates in 2007, 2008, 2009. None of those were ever hard dates, however. Most of them... well, call it wishful thinking, boundless optimism, cockeyed dreams, honest mistakes, whatever you like.

This date is different. This date is real.

Barring tsunamis, general strikes, world wars, or asteroid strikes, you will have the novel in your hands on July 12. I hope you like it.

((For what it's worth, the book's a monster. Think A STORM OF SWORDS))

final cover? 2011

The dragons are coming. Prepare to dance.

And hey... thanks for waiting.

Congratulations on a job well done!

Great news! I can't wait to read it.

Mar. 3rd, 2011 06:28 pm (UTC)
July 12th means that Dance will be released on month after Duke Nukem Forever.

The predictions were right!

Good job! Can't wait!

Woot! Just finished Abercrombie's The Heroes. Currently reading Rothfuss' Wise Man's Fear. Then I get to re-read Storm of Swords just in time for A Dance with Dragons! This may be the best year of fantasy reading ever!! I do NOT envy those in position to judge the best fantasy novels of the year.

No words will suffice to express my joy. Only this:

Mar. 3rd, 2011 09:19 pm (UTC)
I almost messed my pants the first time I realized Meekus the Male Model there, of "Just because we have chiseled abs and stunning features, it doesn't mean that we too can't not die in a freak gasoline fight accident" eugoogly fame = True Blood's Eric Northman...

But, more importantly, OMG IT'S FINALLY COMING OUT! I Squeeeee'd out loud right here in the office when I read this. Congrats and I am SO looking forward to it; the fact it won't have the 2006 cover to match the rest of my collection is a small price I'll gladly pay to finally be able to read this thing. Thankyouthankyouthankyou!

Great news! Can't wait!

When is book 6 coming? (Just kidding, sorry! =D)

Dates for non-English editions
cannot be announced at this time. We don't know when the foreign publishers are scheduling the new book. For non-English publishers, they have to get a copy of the final edited manuscript, give it to their translator, and after the translation work is done, the publisher has to decide when to schedule their own native-language edition. That adds to the publishing time-line considerably for non-English editions.

All of those decisions are not in our hands. If you want the book in Spanish ( Gigamesh does an outstanding translation and production of the books), or German, or Catalan, etc., the best thing to do would be to sign up to that publisher's newsletter if they offer one, to keep in touch with the publisher and hear about their plans for publication of DANCE. Drop them an email if they don't have a newsletter and ask when they are scheduling their native-language edition.

At this time, there are no plans to do stand-alone book tours in Europe. George will be doing a couple of book store appearances while in Poland in June. But that's a month before the USA/UK editions will be released.

Plans for any tours in the USA or the UK are not scheduled at this time. I can assure you that he won't be on the road July 12th.

The one place to find George and get your DANCE signed that is firmly set in his schedule would be at this year's WorldCon: http://www.renovationsf.org/. You'll also get the bonus of hundreds of other authors, artists, editors who will attend and be doing panels, signings, and other events for 5 full days, including the Hugo Awards ceremony (and you'll be able to vote for the Hugos final ballot if you sign up now), Masquerade, Art Show, Dealers' room, parties at night, including at least one night for the Brotherhood Without Banners party that are always a high point at WorldCon, etc.

We also have no clue on any e-book editions release dates. Look to the publishers' sites, or on-line booksellers for information about e-book editions. Same for the audio edition, or a paperback release date for any publisher.

Re: Dates for non-English editions
The information I have from Voyager is that they plan to have the ADWD ebook on sale in the UK on the same day as the hardcover, but this isn't set in stone yet :-)

Hell yeah!
Mar. 3rd, 2011 07:30 pm (UTC)
I am curious though. How on earth is the book coming out in 4 months when it isn't finished yet? I'm guessing it's already edited, you doing that as you write it. I was always under the impression from reading other writers' blogs that it took about a year to publish once a book was submitted, and that that time frame could be crunched to 6 months or so if the publisher wanted to rush it.

Very excited for this book. I'm almost done reading Storm of Swords...can't wait to read Feast For Crows and then to have Dragons to enjoy over the summer. Thanks for creating a wonderful world to get immersed in.

Dearest Ser Martin:

I began reading these books in September of last year and am currently about 100 pages away from the end of A Feast for Crows. I appreciate your instinctively knowing this and, as such, setting the publication date for July, since you do not want me to wait as long as the rest of these poor bastards for the next one.

You obviously know how special I am.

I do not know how you know this, nor shall I question it, but I thank you nevertheless.

With breathless anticipation,
Mar. 3rd, 2011 06:56 pm (UTC)
Sir, best of luck on bringing it all to a close. We look forward to hearing you say "Lo, I, the George, have slain Kong! Feast upon his vittles!"

And of course, I think we're all looking forward to July.

Thank you! ^_^
