I think the idea that "only boys like Fantasy" comes from the ideas that SciFi and Fantasy are the same thing, and back in the 40s when SciFi was in its "golden age," it was pretty much written by men, for men. I've been researching my great-grand uncle Richard Shaver's stories for my own work, and ye gods! The sexism is awful!
But the times they are a-changin', and while I still see more male authors of Hard Science Fiction, there are a lot of female writers and readers. Anyone who truly thinks Fantasy does not appeal to women needs to remember it's 2011, not 1941.
