New Cover for the UK

Spain
The good folks at Harper Collins Voyager, my publishers in the United Kingdom and Australia, have informed me that they've changed the cover for the forthcoming DANCE WITH DRAGONS hardcover.

They've decided to go with the same cover art as on the American edition, though the design and background colors will vary.

Here's the old UK cover:

And here's the new one:

I know the long delay with DANCE has frustrated many of you... but hey, it's certainly provided a lot of gainful employment for book designers and cover artists. I wonder if I deserve a line in the Guinness Book of World Records: the unpublished book with the most covers.

This one should stick, though.

July 12. Coming soon.

Yay! I preordered the UK version, but I'm not going to lie, while the old art was ok, I preferred the American cover. Glad to know it's been changed!

Good timing...
After I finish the four novels I have on the go, I will read aFfC for the second time, which should neatly coincide with the release of aDwD... Works for me.

One way or another, it's coming out and that's the good news. Again continue with the success & congratulations on an amazing year so far.

An improvement
Ha, ha! Yes, every cloud has a silver lining. I like this new cover better. I hope they choose it for the Spanish version too.

I love this new cover a lot more, I must admit. The old was gorgeous-- better than the covers of a lot of other books-- but there's something so fresh and nice about this one. ♥

I'll be on my honeymoon in Bora Bora on the 12th, but I figured out how to get the book the day it releases... I pre-ordered it on my Nook, now I'll just need to find someplace that has wi-fi!

By my count, ADWD has had 4 American and 2 British covers (including the final ones used), plus the SubPress Edition. So seven. Might be close to being a record, anyway :-)

I'm still hopelessly wishing they'd go back to the Stephen Youll covers. I hate mid-series style changes of any kind and I liked having real art on the cover.

Youll regret this!
I'm with you -- the change drives me nuts in its own right but to discard the GORGEOUS Stephen Youll covers for what are (let's face it) Generic Fantasy Book Covers is just sad.

Pre-ordered from amazon.ca with whatever cover turns up, it's what's between the covers that matters after all! Although I have (and adore!) my Kindle, certain books still need to be in tangible form for me. For example, I just read on Kindle Lisa Tuttle's "The Silver Bough" and after finishing it, immediately ordered the "hard copy" version too, 'cause I couldn't keep such a lovely book only in digital form. Your work, Mr. Martin, I've yet to get in Kindle form because I already have most, if not all, in tangible books and that certainly won't change with ADwD.

I know, I know, don't judge a book by its cover, but the new one doesn't really "go" as well with the rest of the books as the old version. It does look good, though, have to admit that much.

Gosh that revised cover is beautiful! I hope it's easier to get my hands on A Dance with Dragons (two of our major bookchains in Australia are having problems, and a lot of stores are closing down/not getting stock in). I had such terrible luck finding Game of Thrones. I had to travel to eight bookstores just to find a copy. :(

*exhale of exasperation*

I can't BELIEVE they went with that new cover... The Dance With Dragons cover should have a SWORD, damn it... A SWORD!!! This ruins the whole book. I'm sorry, George, but I'm afraid, if you go with that new cover, you'll have to rewrite the entire book from the beginning.

Very nice, but I think I prefer the previous one. Not that it makes difference to me... I have the kindle version pre-ordered.

I thought we weren't supposed to judge a book by it's cover.
And like infinite_hiatus said, it's still ADWD underneath everything.

My sister's been reading AGoT as promised, she was halfway through it by Sunday afternoon so hopefully she's done by now, and hopefully you've got yourself a new fan.

I have a bit of sympathy for the cover artist as he would have thought his art would have been used for the book for so long only to have it get replaced at the last minute.

A bit like Doorways.

*laughs* I wonder if Guinness would take that as a record... :)

I like the new(est) cover very much!

Books
With respect, while cover art is important, its not the be all and end all. They are all cool and I like them.

What I would like to know is: Since Dance is the second part of FfC and takes place simultaneously, when can we expect "The Winds of Winter"? I am asking this with the greatest respect for my favorite author, who does not like to be rushed. But this has been a very long wait. I am a bit worried that the vastly increased publicity, public appearances etc etc though the HBO series will take away even more writing time. Why not just finish the series, then go on every Convention, tour etc that comes along. I had cancer in 2009 and while I am recovered now (hopefully), one of the things that would have annoyed me most would been to croak before I can read the conclusion of the ASoIaF series. Here is hoping. We all wish you the best of health and creativity.

Nice cover
Not bad- looks pretty good!

I do have to go on the record that I terribly miss Stephen Youll's artwork that was on the first three (and unused for the 4th) books.

I understand the decision- they wanted more "non-fantasy readers" to give the series a chance. However, You'll art was the reason I picked up AGoT in the first place years ago.

ADwD
Wow, that's look nice.

Dear George, Ser, now that ADwD it's done and delivered, so to speak, I'd really like to know something about the troubles (e.g. the rewriting, the meereeneese knot) that brought to the delays of these last years and the future perspectives. It would great to have an analysis on the ASOIAF update page! "Done" is a sweet word, but I guess we're all curious about the artistic process.
