Talking About the Dance

Kong is dead. That is to say, A DANCE WITH DRAGONS is complete, and moving inexorably towards its July 12 publication date.

Yes, I know. Old news. I've announced that before. And since finally completing A DANCE WITH DRAGONS some weeks ago, and announcing it here, I have been working on... drum roll, please... A DANCE WITH DRAGONS!

That's the way it goes with books. You finish, and breathe a sigh of relief... and then you get back to work. There's always more to be done. Your editor reads it and gives you notes. You make revisions, corrections. A copyeditor goes over the text, finds errors, points out contradictions and inconsistencies, raises queries. You fix some, stet others. Friends and fans gulp down the book, and find mistakes your editors, copyeditors, and proofreaders all missed. You fix those too, as time allows. Then there's the appendix to prepare. And then the appendix needs to be edited, proofread, corrected... and on and on it goes...

But now even that is behind me. Copyediting, appendix, proofs, corrections, all that stuff. The book tour has been planned (a few details yet to be worked out), the marketing plans are in place... and I can finally say that Kong is not just merely dead, but really most sincerely dead.

Now that the dust is settling at last, I thought I'd take a deep breath and look back at what a long strange trip this has been. If the process interests you, read on. But beware -- past this point, there may be some SPOILERS lurking amidst my discussion. Read on at your own peril.

Does anyone know if there are any special editions of this book that are going to be released (like leather bound, etc.)?

Just completed the first four books.
And apparently I must live under a rock. Because I had never heard of the story before the HBO series came out. I have not watched a single episode to date, but I loved the books. Thank you very much for the story, it was a fun, engrossing read.....

I love this post. I've been hoping for something like this for years, getting the ins and outs of the process and little details about ADWD. Anyone else a James Ellroy fan? LA Confidential, the third installment in his dark LAPD crime quartet, was impossibly long to publish but wound so tightly with plot Ellroy felt he couldn't cut too much. So he essentially sliced the language, removing articles and unnecessary verbs, writing in a style with sentences so rapid and tight they're a cross between a telegram and a razor-tipped bullet.

Anyway, reading your last post reminded me of Ellroy, and how Westeros would feel if DANCE was written in that style. "Jon Snow--the wall, iced out. Suitcase of golden dragons, silver .45 swordbreaker in pantaloons, scotch in fist. Knock on the door--too fuckin early. Stannis again. Goddamned if he'd annex the wall's castles. Pissant southern knights. Enough. Time to face the fucking music."

Dance with Dragons and Book Tour
Congratulations on finishing the book! Guess this is what Aegon must have felt like after the Conquest!
Looking very much forward to reading "Dance" (understatement of the year) - now have to figure out logistics on "Reading while Driving" for the Montreal-Boston trek on July 12th.
You're the Best!

first post
What a great view into the last five years. Doesn't seem like so long when he puts it out there like that.
