Talking About the Dance

Spain
Kong is dead. That is to say, A DANCE WITH DRAGONS is complete, and moving inexorably towards its July 12 publication date.

Yes, I know. Old news. I've announced that before. And since finally completing A DANCE WITH DRAGONS some weeks ago, and announcing it here, I have been working on... drum roll, please... A DANCE WITH DRAGONS!

That's the way it goes with books. You finish, and breathe a sigh of relief... and then you get back to work. There's always more to be done. Your editor reads it and gives you notes. You make revisions, corrections. A copyeditor goes over the text, finds errors, points out contradictions and inconsistencies, raises queries. You fix some, stet others. Friends and fans gulp down the book, and find mistakes your editors, copyeditors, and proofreaders all missed. You fix those too, as time allows. Then there's the appendix to prepare. And then the appendix needs to be edited, proofread, corrected... and on and on it goes...

But now even that is behind me. Copyediting, appendix, proofs, corrections, all that stuff. The book tour has been planned (a few details yet to be worked out), the marketing plans are in place... and I can finally say that Kong is not just merely dead, but really most sincerely dead.

Now that the dust is settling at last, I thought I'd take a deep breath and look back at what a long strange trip this has been. If the process interests you, read on. But beware -- past this point, there may be some SPOILERS lurking amidst my discussion. Read on at your own peril.

The genius of hard work
To me, the most revealing insight of your post is that you're not a genius. At least not as shown in TV and movies, that someone sits down in front of a piano without ever having played one and voila! He immediately outclasses all the other dedicated, hard-working, pathetic piano players.

That just doesn't happen in real life.

I attended a public high school in Spain but learned English by reading English language websites virtually every day since I was 13. Average has been about well over an hour per day so it's been thousands of hours answering posts, arguing, debating, watching presentations and now watching Game of Thrones. If someone asks me a method for learning English in three weeks, sorry, I don't know how to do that!

It works the same way por professional chess players. It turns out that, even for some young talents, they had spent many years practising before they really started hitting the stride. And even after becoming world-class players, if they try to play another game, they're mediocre. Why? Their mental move database is restricted to chess.

And your work in ASOIAF is so amazing because you have focused on one story for the last 20 years, and put a monumental effort of writing, unwriting, rearranging, etc. to ensure that it was absolutely amazing. It would have been easy to release ADWD in 2008 and explain readers that characters time-travel thanks to a magician. You did not do that. In the end, nobody will care whether ADWD was published in 2008 or 2011. Lord of the Rings coul've been written in 1970, or in 1920, or hundreds of years ago. People don't know and don't care.

If I'm sincere the first three books are the best novels I've read in my life. The fourth, well, I'm being sincere, it was not at the same level. Good, but not ASOIAF good. And I already preordered ADWD so let's find out what kind of book it is!

Thank you and congrats

Wow
Thanks for sharing your plight. To me, it sounds most daunting. I think I would rather solve math problems. Anyway, most of us know that you are constantly working on your tale. Whether you are physically writing it down or working things out in your head. Thanks for all the great words. I love your books!

Made an account to say!
George your books are amazing! Any fans that have given you a hard time surely should take a step back and remember the amazing world you have created. Take as long as you need with the rest of the series whether it be 10-20 years I'll still read and still love.

So, 35 to Tyrion, Dany and Jon. Let's say 10 to 8 for our old friend. more of the other character will get either 1 or 2 chapters, maybe more. That leaves Bran with what? his old count from the first two books, 7 chapters or probably even less? I gotta say, I was hoping for more. Though for all I know the new guy is Coldhands so..

Congratulations! You are awesome and I will keep saying that no matter how much time it would take you to give us the next book. Right now I see new people pick up the books after they watched the tv show, and I am a little bit envious that they have so much stuff coming their way. BUT there will be holiday on my street too :)

The next largest chunk o' chapters belongs to an old POV character who has been missing for a couple of books, but now returns to us... rather the worse for wear.

Please.. please please please...
Take a vacation. You. Have. Earned. It. Baby Monkey can wait.

And while he waits, he can ride on a pig: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_sfnQDr1-o -- Be warned, cuteness overload and a song that will get stuck in your head. After you've rested, Baby Monkey can come back!

Fascinating, fascinating stuff. As a struggling writer myself I always like to see how my favorite writers handle their craft. Thanks for the inside word; it's really cool to read.

Dunk and Egg
George,

Just finished re-reading the three Dunk and Egg novellas. Love 'em.

Do you have any plans for a 4th in between Kong and Winds? Been hoping Dunk and Tanselle Too Tall catch up at some point even though he missed her in Dorne.

Thanks.

Readers cannot understand how much work actually goes into a book and, even with good explanations like this, they still don't get it. All they want to know is when. As a writer who reads a lot, I can understand their anxiety, but the works takes as long as it takes.

2015 HBO The Winds of Winter
July 2011 Dance with Dragons book is released.
2011 HBO Game of Thrones
2015 HBO The Winds of Winter
So can we assume that book will be out before 2015?

Then comes the hard parts...
2016, 2017, books six and seven have to publish; assuming HBO is still running the series.

Can it be done?

Congratulation!
Congratulations, Sir Martin! Going through the creative/artistic process is a long and harsh road. To do it right, there are no short cuts. Many thanks for taking on that journey! It is greatly appreciated and will surely bring joy to the fans that you have already and the many more fans joining our ranks in the generations to come.
