Talking About the Dance

Kong is dead. That is to say, A DANCE WITH DRAGONS is complete, and moving inexorably towards its July 12 publication date.

Yes, I know. Old news. I've announced that before. And since finally completing A DANCE WITH DRAGONS some weeks ago, and announcing it here, I have been working on... drum roll, please... A DANCE WITH DRAGONS!

That's the way it goes with books. You finish, and breathe a sigh of relief... and then you get back to work. There's always more to be done. Your editor reads it and gives you notes. You make revisions, corrections. A copyeditor goes over the text, finds errors, points out contradictions and inconsistencies, raises queries. You fix some, stet others. Friends and fans gulp down the book, and find mistakes your editors, copyeditors, and proofreaders all missed. You fix those too, as time allows. Then there's the appendix to prepare. And then the appendix needs to be edited, proofread, corrected... and on and on it goes...

But now even that is behind me. Copyediting, appendix, proofs, corrections, all that stuff. The book tour has been planned (a few details yet to be worked out), the marketing plans are in place... and I can finally say that Kong is not just merely dead, but really most sincerely dead.

Now that the dust is settling at last, I thought I'd take a deep breath and look back at what a long strange trip this has been. If the process interests you, read on. But beware -- past this point, there may be some SPOILERS lurking amidst my discussion. Read on at your own peril.

I am so excited and cannot wait!
I have pre-ordered DWD the day you announced a publication date for it, it may have been a while but I am sure it will more than please. I even have subscribed to HBO solely for GOT, siting the April 17th (my birthday) debut date as the best Birthday gift I could get. Thank you for sharing a bit of the writing process with us.

That unresolved question..
..that has been nagging me since GOT..so does Mord ever get to go to King´s Landing to get the full reward from Tyrion?
May. 20th, 2011 03:43 pm (UTC)
Yay! Congrats!

A question from my Aggie fiance, who is currently grievously injured and bedridden: why Texas A&M for the special collections? (And when will these files be opened to the general public?)
May. 20th, 2011 04:37 pm (UTC)
Texas A&M has one of the largest and best SF and fantasy collections in the country, and the physical facility where the papers and books are stored is outstanding.
May. 20th, 2011 03:49 pm (UTC)
Be glad it wasn't Ser Gregor Clegane!

Sometimes I feel like the only guy in the world whose favorite character is Davos Seaworth. I hope he doesn't get too short shrifted!

Or, uh, short-headed. *gulp*

Sandor "The Hound"
Please...I'm on my knees, believe me...PLEASE tell me Sandor is not dead!
Not mentioned in POVS, I'm wondering about that lovely bastard ;)

Re: Sandor "The Hound"
Yeah, I hope he just left his helmet and wandered off alone, but I got the feeling from Feast that he really was dead and buried. I was a bit upset that we weren't there to "see" his death.

Congratulations, well deserved.

And thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Congrats, good work, and good luck on the long road.

Most looking forward to the Jaime and Barristan POVs. And hope whoever the Dornish POV is might be in the company of Prince Doran, he's become one of my favourite characters.

Can't wait!

Texas A&M you say? ROADTRIP!!! ;)

Thanks for this. I really find it interesting and appreciate that you took the time to fill us in on this process. We've been with you in spirit every step of the way (except for a few assholes who don't deserve to read your books).

On another note, not sure if you saw that Jeffrey Catherine Jones passed away yesterday.

Very upsetting as she was relatively young still.

And to think you will be writing The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring with a similar process... I cannot imagine how you do it. Hopefully, the next 2 won't vex you as much or cause a split to a new volume (yikes)!

We do love your effort to bring forth what you deem as your best work. We thank you, sir!

we love you george!!
thank you for giving your time for us, the readers, to enjoy such an amazing piece of art!

I am so excited. I have made it known that all I want for my birthday is A Dance With Dragons, even though it comes out some two weeks AFTER my birthday lol. I can't wait!

Great book, I expect. Great writer, I know.
May. 20th, 2011 06:06 pm (UTC)
I don't care how long the wait was for this new book, I already know it was well worth it. I'm waiting for July on tenterhooks and am trying to get the fantasy fans I know to read your series in time for this new release.

Anyway, I want to say congratulations on killing the beast and a heartfelt thank you for bringing such a wonderful world into my life.
May. 20th, 2011 06:21 pm (UTC)
Thank you very much, Master! :)

Slightly off topic
I have to first say WOW... WOW!!! Thank you so much for such an insightful account of the process, I loved reading about it. I must admit that I have been horribly impatient about this book but also supportive of your taking the time you did to make sure it is the best it can be. I have already set up my pre-order with Amazon to get this the day it comes out, such a wonderful bonus Amazon has.
However, I have 2 questions for you and wasnt aware of any where else to ask them so, here goes...

1) Will there be any Southeastern locations on your book tour OR are there any Cons you are attending in the southeastern states?

2) Is there anywhere I can find hard back copies for the first 4 books? Amazon doesnt seem to have them all in HB. I am new to the series, a good friend recommended it to me about 2yrs ago and I cannot stop raving about it to friends, family, co-workers, random strangers on the street... anyone who will stand still long enough for me to ask, "Hey, have you ever heard of George RR Martin?" However, I only have the paperback editions and since Dance will be in hardback, I would like to match the others to it.

I really appreciate your time, all the hard work you put forth to entertain us... your books now have a special place in my "read once a year" shelf.. a very small group consisting of Tolkien, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Anne Rice, and now YOU.
May. 20th, 2011 06:39 pm (UTC)
Thank you.
As Neil said, "GRRM is not your bitch."

I'm sure you are more relieved than anyone to have finally finished this one. I can't wait to read it :)

Kong Is One Heavy Beast!
Just reading your lines about the amount of work and effort put into this whole process makes me shudder. Who in their right mind would want to go through this!? The answer in short is: a truly talented individual! Somebody who is passionate, has an incredible vision and originality and one damn knack for captivating people with his imagination...namely you!

I want to add my congratulations to all those the other posters have bestowed on you! Thank you for your work and dedication not only to the "A Song Of Ice And Fire" saga but to your fans and admirers. HBO's "Game Of Thrones" has proven to be an extraordinary visual companion to the books, a project manned by people who have seemingly and utterly been inspired by this amazing creation of yours!

I can't think of a more precious gift than sharing one's imagination and creativity with others! You are generous indeed sir!

You probably have already heard this ad nauseam, and my postings do tend to be (to my own shame) syrupy and seemingly created by a cheerleading gallery, but I wish you good luck and continued success and all the best ahead!

My advice on that little new monkey on your shoulder...slay it sir, slay it without delay, lest another Kong is in the making! LOL...Be well always!

Thanks so much for sharing so much insight into the process! Can't wait to read it!
