Monkeys On My Back

ape
Now that Kong has fallen, all the smaller monkeys who were hiding in his fur have come out and began to howl and chatter and beat me about the head and shoulders.

I got one off my back yesterday (though not one that most of you will care much about): my bloody taxes. At least, I got them to my accountant, so he can file my returns by the June 15 deadline. I had to take an extension back in April, since I was deep in the throes of wrestling Kong and did not have the time to deal with all those little bits of paper. I try not to bitch about taxes too much, mind you. As a good liberal, I don't actually mind paying taxes. (And I pay a LOT of taxes). I know taxes are the price of a civilized society. That being said, I hate DOING taxes. It has gotten easier in recent years, with Ty doing a lot of the prep work and my accountant doing the final prep and filing the return... but somehow it still always seems to come down to me at three in the morning, zonked on coffee and staring at a faded receipt for $8.17 and trying to figure out what it is, where it's from, and whether it's deductible.

Anyway, that's done. For one more year, at least.

Which is not to say that my back is without monkeys.

Here's the stuff I am dealing with right now:
-- reviewing pitch proposals and putting together the overplot for the new Wild Cards mosaic novel, LOWBALL,
-- writing the first draft of my script for episode nine of season two of the HBO series GAME OF THRONES, "Blackwater," and damn, but this one is a bitch of an adaptation, the original author made the damn battle way too big and too expensive,
-- working on a Nicholas van Rijn story for the Poul Anderson tribute anthology Gardner Dozois and Greg Bear are editing (an especially noisy monkey, since the deadline was today and the story is a long way from being done),
-- getting back into THE WORLD OF ICE AND FIRE, the long-promised concordance I am doing with Elio and Linda, which is almost three years late at this point, and needs to be finished and delivered by year's end,
-- roughing out the next Dunk and Egg novella, the next story in the queue after I finished the "Blackwater" script and the Poul Anderson story,
-- planning for a long summer of travel: the visit to Poland and Slovenia, the book tour, San Diego comicon, worldcon in Reno, Bubonicon, and maybe another trip overseas in the fall for the HBO show, depending,
-- working on a complete redesign of my website, much needed and long potsponed,
-- supervising and reviewing and approving materials for the games, the cards, the video games, the comic books, the replica swords, the miniatures, etc, etc.

I am exhausted just typing about it.

And behind all that, of course, lurks Son of Kong: the WINDS OF WINTER.

Why am I writing this damned post??? I need to get to WORK!

You should really collect all of the Dunk and Egg stories into one book. I want to read them, but then I'd have to track down three different anthologies to do so.

Of course those anthologies are filled with interesting pieces by other authors... but I'm a poor college boy strapped for cash. I can only buy so many books while still managing to fill my car with gas.

You crack me up, sir.
Kong's body is not even cold yet and you're already off to another expedition! Cool. Question for the whole of GRRM's fandom (and maybe even the man himself). Is there a name for the world that contains the continents of Westeros, Essos, and Sothoryos? The globe, planet or whatever? I've always been curious and can't find this info anywhere!

No stress. Stress is bad for you. Remember to breathe (it's another lovely day in my part of the state, how about yours?), pick a monkey and go with it. Throw the rest a banana to keep 'em calm til you can give 'em your attention. You are, after all, only a single human animal and can only do somuch at once. :D

Advice
George, I know it's your baby and you want to protect the quality of your vision, but it really sounds like you need an assistant to pawn off some of your decisions on so you can focus on the big picture stuff and not the nitty gritty in the weeds stuff.

Re: Advice
I have an assistant. Actually, I have two assistants, if you count Parris. Though maybe I need three, or four, or...

I wonder how many assistants Neil Gaiman has?

Dude is too damn busy. Although I would be disappointed, I wouldn't blame you if instead of finishing Ice and Fire you changed your name and vanished to Tahiti.

I'm tired just reading that to-do list. :p

I certainly hope you have a lot of supportive and loving people around you to crack jokes and help you along and remind you of the joy in life. And I certainly wish you and your accountant luck.

Please take good care of yourself, Mr. Martin. That is the most important thing.

(Never mind this sassy bunch of geeks. No matter how much we look forward to new projects, I don't think any rational person would want you to run yourself down trying to battle all of those monkeys at once)

That said, it does sound like a very exciting year!

Is HBO planning on calling Season 2 "Game of Thrones" or keep in line with your books and call it "Clash of Kings?"
Or is that something you're not really involved with?

You should really have a sit down with that author and give him a piece of your mind. :)

I recently reread A Clash for Kings in preparation for the upcoming release of A Dance with Dragons. As I was reading the Battle of the Blackwater I occasionally wondered about how hard it was going to be to adapt to the screen and didn't envy the scriptwriter their job. Good luck with that.

Another Dunk & Egg novella?! Wonderful news! I wonder if you can't give us a hint about its setting... are our favorite Hedge Knight and his Squire finally going to see the Wall?! :D I can't wait to read it!

Episode 9?
So season 2 will be 10 episodes long as well?

I was hoping they'd stretch it out to 12 or 14, as Clash is more intricate than Thrones.

Re: Episode 9?
Might I suggest ten 1.5 hour long episodes. :p

Don't worry... it surely seems VERY impressive on the first view when put down into such a list... but remember... there's nothing on the list you wouldn't have already managed several times all over. Just cut it into tiny pieces and the monkey stew is as good as cooked.

See? NO (reason to) PANIC.

Its not just you.
If it helps you feel any better. I seriously doubt my taxes are as complex as your own, yet we're still working it out with my accountant.

Mr. Martin's gettin' bizzayy!!
Wow. That's one helluva list. It seems like there's something there for all types of fans in there. For my part, I'm happiest to see that another Dunk & Egg story is in the offing. I love those two.

Enjoy the travel, and good luck with all of the forthcoming tasks.

I seem to recall that you penned the script for the upcoming episode 8, but didn't see anything recently. Is that right?

find some time for a little R&R
Hopefully you also take some time to relax, sip a fine Arbor red, take a nap in a hammock, etc. etc. etc. And for god's sake lay something other than taxes! :P

Cheers!

RE: Website. Surely you could hire someone to do that for you...? Or do you mean having to work with the person to get the website just so?

And dang, that's quite a list.

swords
Are there talks of doing replicas of the swords from the show? I love the replicas that have been done so far, but some of them are already sold out. I also love the look of the screen ones just as much! Any chance of maybe some replicas by United Cutlery or anything like that? :)
Best of luck shoving all the monkeys into the barrel!

Re: swords
Where did you hear that the replicas are sold out? I don't believe that this is the case. So far as I know, all the swords produced by Valyrian Steel remain available.

No, no plans to replicate the swords from the show. At least not in steel. HBO may license inexpensive plastic replicas to be sold in toy shops, but that's their call.

Europe Trip
Poland and Slovenia? I sure wish you could stop through Budapest. I move there this summer. As nice as Poland and Slovenia are, Budapest is much prettier! I don't arrive until the beginning of August, though. If you add dates to your European tour, I hope you'll let us know.

Dance
Mr. Martin, I know you're a very busy man, but I was wondering if Dance of Dragons would have multiple cover options? One as the more classic style with the colored cover, or the more fancied up version as the new edition releases? I have the old cover style and was hoping it would...but i doubt multiple cover options would be probable, just the new style. Thanks.

Dunk & Egg
Make them come back to life, please. I want Egg to win back his Throne in A Dream of Spring. While delivering bloodshed. Lots of bloodshed. Then at the end, I want him to make a toast. Then after he's eaten that, he can say: "To the God damn Fevre Dream!"

This stuff writes itself. I really don't know why it takes you authors so long.
