In Poznan

A long day of travel yesterday, but we're in Poznan now, on the third stop of my Polish tour. Big booksigning tonight. Tunrout may rival Warsaw.

Ty is almost himself again, though seriously sleep deprived. He slept all the way from Nidzica to Poznan. My own sleep cycle remains screwy. I am wide awake right now, at six in the morning, but I tend to fade badly in late afternoon/ early evening. I will need to break that cycle today, or I'll sleep through my booksigning.

It felt strange not to watch GAME OF THRONES last night. Reports of the season finale seem good, however, so I am encouraged.

My biggest problem continues to be all the tech that I brought with me to keep me connected with the world. Supposedly everything was fixed and set with my cell phone and its Polish sim... but no, it would still not connect back to Santa Fe. I made a call with the hotel land line instead, but failed to reach Parris. Left a message instead. I HOPE it was on my home machine, but you never know. And my laptop functions well enough for accessing the internet, but cannot find the server that allows it to connect to my home machine and georgerrmartin.com -- which means I have NO access to any email, and haven't had for days. This is stressing me considerably. What with everything going on in my life and career right now, it is really not good for me to be so cut off. I was repeatedly told that getting off AOL would make things better for me, email wise, but so far this seems not to be the case. AOL can at least be accessed from anywhere in the world. So I just hope no one from Random House, HarperCollins, HBO, or any of my other associates is trying to get hold of me for some urgent matter... if you are, alas, nothing is getting through. All I can say, well, Ty is Working On It.

You might consider seeing if you have have email forwarded as a copy to a secondary address - such as a google mail address, which seems to have good connections most places as well?

It might alleviate some of the stress of not being able to connect to your home network.

Otherwise, I do hope you're enjoying the rest of your trip. Sad that technology isn't holding up it's end of the existential agreement in keeping you connected and up to date!

I think it should be better when you reach Slovenia. I don't know why exactly you're experiencing those problems, but I have no problems reaching America on my cell phone. If nothing else, I'm sure you can find someone to help you call home. And have you tried using Skype?

Re: Skype
I don't think the problem is Poland. The problem is my own tech... most particularly, my email servers. Which are actually based out in Nova Scotia, I believe, and which I have repeatedly asked my webmaster to get me off of... this is not the first time they have failed me when I really needed them. I need to find some ultra reliable, always dependable servers to hold georgerrmartin.com

Thank Gods for TVTropes.org or I would have never found this great lj. GoT was feckin' AMAZING last night. Everyone who worked on it did a fabulous job and the whole thing has worked so beautifully as an adaptation. I'm currently re-exploring the original books for the first time in about 4 years and falling in love with all the characters all over again.

Its not often that such a great book series is done WELL in television, but if it weren't for such a strong writer who laid the basework, none of it could have gotten to where it is today. Enjoy Poland and hopefully your tech gremlins will get off your computer for a bit so that you can reconnect with all the important peoples.

I've been using Dreamhost for years - they're inexpensive and just freaking fabulous. The default webmail is accessible from the browser (as someone said - it's like running water in this day and age), and easily forward-able to another email.

Anyways, I hope you have luck getting your communication problems ironed out! :)

It appears Yoren is not only a man of the Watch, but a great hairdresser also:)))

Yeah, I've been using AOL since I was 13 and will never switch!

Hope your tech problems are solved soon, as I'm sure you don't need the extra stress.
Am watching GoT in Israel - we see the last episode on Thurs., and I'm only sorry that the entire Ice and Fire series hasn't been done yet, because I don't want it to end! It is everything I hoped for and more; scenes are often as I pictured them while reading the books, which is amazing.
Looks like you have a crushing schedule this summer - I hope that you get through it as easily as possible.

My report on the GoT season finale
So. Awesome.

It's completely lovely to have a story that is so dear to me told SO WELL in a visual medium.

Thank you!

Respectfully, getting off AOL's Jurassic internet service is a great idea; getting off AOL's largely stable email system to switch to a dedicated server is a wretched, terrible idea for exactly the reasons you describe. I realize this may not be much help until you get back from Poland, but unless you have NSA-level privacy concerns I would recommend returning to cloud-based email - GMail is unequivocally the best and easiest to get set up, although Yahoo and Hotmail are perfectly fine. Sounds like your webmaster either has a vested interest in getting you to switch to and stay on those servers or has (as IT folks sometimes do) hitched his wagon to a technology he likes and is blinded to its limitations.

Anyway, if you're interested, the season finale was stellar, book sales are sure to go up, and you're finally done with "A Dance With Dragons." Hope you enjoy the rest of your time abroad.

The finale was tremendous, George and wait until you get to the final scene. Beyond my expectations, truly.

E-mail anywhere
As far as I know using 'mail2web.com' connects to whatever server you use anywhere in the world. I've used it in the UK, France, Sweden, Finland and last week in Turkey. It may be slowish and somewhat cumbersome but you CAN always access your e-mail.
Good luck,

Ty is working on it. There's nothing you can do but give up and enjoy the disconnect. The season finale was FANTASTIC! Everyone is pleased. My husband and I are thrilled about the wonderful anniversary gift we'll both be receiving on July 12th. You have done very well!! And your fans are proud of you! Now, enjoy your trip.

Great Season Finale!
I was browsing the Chapters/Indigo bookstore online, and saw that the latest book is supposed to be available for pre-order (can't wait for that!), and after following a few links found my way here.

Just wanted to say that the season finale was amazing. I started reading a Song of Ice and Fire a couple years ago, and I quite seriously think that the new HBO adaptation is the *single* best adaptation I've ever seen. I was a huge fan of Tolkien, and when they moved those works onto the screen, I thought that was probably as good as we were likely to see. Boy, I was wrong.

This has stayed incredibly close to the book. A better cast couldn't have been asked for, and just... everything about it is so true to the books, it's amazing. I seriously can not wait for the next season! I'll be making a point to get it all on DVD / BluRay for my collection as soon as it's available!

Thank you so much, for everything!

I can't wait to see you in Slovenia! I hope you go sightseeing a bit, especially Piran which is close to Koper (it reminds me of King's landing) :)

The finale was great but watching this video of Joffrey getting slapped for ten minutes straight made all the heartaches of this season worth it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYNeT2nzEgA

I'm now very curious about the backstory of the White Walkers
I've read the 1st 4 books and intend to keep on reading, and I think the HBO series is fantastic, in every sense of the word. But I've become increasingly curious about the White Walkers. They seem to be sentient beings, and not just frozen zombies. It would be very cool if at some point in time we can get some sort of history or backstory on what they are and how they came to be.

Hi! I've just gotten back from book signing in Poznań. It was fun, thank you for being so nice. I will surely try to visit USA :) Hope your hand won't fall of - I've seen all this people outside Empik, the line was huuuuge. I was lucky to be one of the first people to get your autograph.

Jun. 20th, 2011 04:57 pm (UTC)
Sure, NOW this happens. If only you had these problems when people were hounding you for A Dance With Dragons!
Jun. 20th, 2011 05:03 pm (UTC)
George, when you set up a new mail account, make sure you use IMAP protocol and this way you will be able to check your email on any machine (phone, tablet, pc) and have it all synchronized beautifully without any problems. For example I can check and replay to my emails on the phone while traveling by train and when I reach home it will be all on my computer without me doing anything.

As far as the season finale is concerned it will be aired today on Polish HBO so you may still have a chance to watch it in the hotel.

I wish I could go to Poznań today and ask for your signature, but alas I live to far away. Hope you have enjoyed your stay in Poland and that you will come here again!

i suppose it doesn't hurt that miss california (now ms. USA) dropped the name of the show during the Ms. USA ceremony while claiming to be a "history geek"

Over all i felt like the show seemed rushed but i know you have to change a few things to simplify them for those who haven't read the books and there was some creative license involved but Can't wait till next years installment.

Hi. Thank you for coming to Poland, it was really nice to finally met you. I hope you will be back soon, maybe in the winter ;). Sometimes I believe we really live somewhere in the North.

And I am sorry (ok, I am not) I said I hate you because of Nymeria and Robb.

By the way, here is the picture I showed you during the booksigning. link.

Keep cool George!

Everything is going fine, don't worry!

The ending was AMAZING! Truly EPIC !!!

It so wonderfull to see how your story was adapted! :)

And for th etechnology... Blaaahhhh, this is a problem for everyone now, when we can't connect with people via internet more than an hour... This is scary!!! Maybe we are slaves, now... An dyou know what, i will leva my computer now, to dive into th esecond half of A CLASH OF KINGS (yeah, i'm a newbie, i started your books at christmas...)

Lot of love from a french guy, who can't understand how he lived without you nearly 30 years.

Many kisses!!

Well...the way I see it, if you can't be reached by anyone, then no one (almost) wouldn't be bothering you while you write The Winds of Winter. Just read through the series for the third time and simply can't wait until july 12th.I just love the way you keep twisting my mind with all the unexpected turns and twists.
The first season of GoT was great! I really liked the way it made me feel and I think it complemented the books in a great way. The connection between Renly and Loras was much tighter than I believed at first. Hoping for more surprises in season two.

Good luck with the rest of your trip!

Use gmail to capture mails
Hi George,

As someone already mentioned, your best bet is to set-up a gmail account and then set up mail forwarding.

I'm sure with a combination of:

Setting up a gmail account
Giving the host a call via skype to get the mail settings (your home mail host)
Setting up the forwarding in gmail

You should be able to access you emails and respond to them as well all through gmail - I've set that up myself for my work emails and it works perfectly.

Hope this helps, good luck!

Season Finale
I was so excited about the season finale I could barely sleep. I cried at the last scene and I didn't do it alone. Jon's flight and retrieval were extremely moving, my hair stood on end when the brothers were repeating their vows. What a beautiful gift. Thank you George and thank you HBO!
