One more monkey down.

Today I delivered the first draft of "Blackwater" to Dan and David. (Finally) A bit overdue, as always. And probably too long and long expensive, as my scripts always are. (I got to write the Battle of the Blackwater. I tried to be good and restrain myself, but you know how things go. Oh, well. I knew the job was dangerous when I took it).

This is television... (no, it's not TV, it's HBO)... so there will undoubtedly be many further drafts and revisions. But the first draft is the hard one.

And it's a good thing it's done. On Sunday I leave for the first leg of my US book tour.

About the script writing process...

When writing the season 2 script, did having a mental image of the actors and their personalities influence the way you wrote the dialogue? Or do you still maintain your original mental image of the characters?

I'm reading the books for the first time and I just finished reading the Battle of the Blackwater. Exhilarating stuff. Can't wait to see what HBO does with it. Here's hoping Davos and Tyrion don't get knocked out at the start. :)

I finished book 4 a couple days ago... it was a surprise at the end to see the note about how you hoped to have dance with dragons done in about a year (that being 6 years ago!!) which leads to wondering when book 6 will be done, as I know without even starting dance of dragons that in about 2.5 weeks from now I'm going to crave book 6. it's a testimony to this amazing world you have created, it is truly amazing and inspiring, but book SIX!!!!

To be honest, HBO really should just go through with an expensive battle scene. That was probably the number one complaint I noticed from viewers fresh to the world of ASOIAF (and also many who've read the books) - they wanted to see the battles. Apparently this was also a complaint regarding HBO's Rome, though.

Plus, the tension really builds up to that occurrence, so it would kind of be blue-balling (to be vulgar, apologies) not to have an epic show of it.

Just finished reading all the books. Started less than three weeks ago, I just couldn't put them down!! Season 1 was truly magical, especially the episode you wrote. I'm very much looking forward to season 2!!

This is related to GoT, but more forward-looking (and if I could find a direct link on the official website to mail you, I would).

Presuming HBO catches up to the books, do you know if they'll be filming seasons 4 and 5 in published order of the books, or will they attempt to consolidate that timeline into one book, as if you hadn't had to split it up into two?

Or is that looking way too far ahead?

I actually finished re-reading that section last night; and while I'm sure the battle will be incredible (very curious how it will be managed on a TV budget), the scene I want to see most is Sansa's conversation with The Hound. I think it could make for absolutely incredible TV.

Oh man, I pray they don't skimp on the budget for the battle of the blackwater! Wildfire is incredibly nasty and feared, and they really need to show it as this raging unpredictable burning death that it is instead of just being fire dyed green :P

That stuff is like napalm, but with a mind of its own!

The Battle of Blackwater must be ambitious indeed! I noticed that HBO glanced over the battles in order to dedicate the time and resources to other things. Looking forward to Season 2

I can't imagine most people taking on so many deadlines!!!

Well, we all have high hopes for Blackwater, chief among them, that Tyrion stays conscious for the majority of the fight... at least until Podrick brings a house of Payne. Sorry, I just woke up. I know that isn't funny, but I can't figure out where the backspace key is in my addled state.

I do sometimes take on more than I can easily chew, I must admit it. I am perpetually guilty of an excess of optimism about how much work I can actually get done in a certain period of time.

There were times in my life and career when I could reliably knock out a teleplay or short story in two weeks, a novella in a month, a novel in a year. Those times are gone, alas.
