Working Away

One more monkey down.

Today I delivered the first draft of "Blackwater" to Dan and David. (Finally) A bit overdue, as always. And probably too long and long expensive, as my scripts always are. (I got to write the Battle of the Blackwater. I tried to be good and restrain myself, but you know how things go. Oh, well. I knew the job was dangerous when I took it).

This is television... (no, it's not TV, it's HBO)... so there will undoubtedly be many further drafts and revisions. But the first draft is the hard one.

And it's a good thing it's done. On Sunday I leave for the first leg of my US book tour.

I'm so excited to see this. I'm sure it will turn out just as wonderful as the pointy end did. :)

Re: Another Dance leak
Well, thanks for the heads up... but there are a lot of bookstores on Long Island. Do you have any more particulars?

On the topic of Game of Thrones:
I'm sure many have seen this, but in the small off chance that some haven't, check out this violin rendition of the theme song! I think it's fantastic!

Re: excited
No official announcements yet other than for Natalie Dormer (Margaery Tyrell). It's making most of us nuts. Yes - I took a poll.

Must. Have. Casting. Clues.
George, you seemed to hint that several actors have been cast, but it's been nearly two weeks since confirmation of Natalie Dormer and nothing!

Going a little crazy here! Gotta have some clues soon, hopefully before you leave for your tour!

Also, do you have any idea of the names of the actors playing Timmett, Chella, Rorge or Biter?

Re: Must. Have. Casting. Clues.
I've no idea who the actors behind those 4 are, but I hope they remain the same in season two, even if they were just extras. Same for Beric Dondarrion who was also but an extra, if I'm not mistaken.

Why so self criticising?

I think your writing style with the POV narrative does the best it can to keep battle scenes from very costly Ben Hur style epic proportions when shown on the screen without loosing the FEELING of such proportions as it's all fluffed up by little tricks and narrative instruments like after action reports for POV Characters that need "catching up"... (Are you sure you didn't write those/similar scenes with a TV serialisation in the back of your mind? Sometimes it almost seems like such.)
The movie guys will know how to keep it this way... as cheap as possible but impressive as hell.

Great Season
Just wanted to let you know my favorite sports station here in Houston has been raving about the first season, making sure to let people know they can still catch all the episodes on HBO Go... I just love hearing them work Game of Thrones into the conversation and spread the word.

Thank you!
Mr. Martin,

Far from the first, no where near the last, a co-worker's gushing led me to your books and made me a die hard fan. Thank you for the wonderful journey, you weave a masterful and the most enjoyable reading experience I've had in a very long time. Three weeks in and I'm about a third of the way through A Feast of Crows. What an amazing, sorrowful odyssey it has been, and I don't want it to end. I can't thank you enough for sharing it with the world. I hope that you come within traveling distance to Sacramento, CA so I can gush like a little girl and meet you in person.

Picking up book five next Tuesday with my sister and girlfriend! =D

How many draft revisions does HBO usually take you through? I remember for Neil Gaiman's Doctor Who episode it wasn't all too terrible, but I imagine an entire series is far more thorough.

Season 1 DVD
Looks like preorder sites have it listed as releasing next spring, I'm assuming to coincide with promoting season 2. Christmas is going to be dissapointing this year...

Can't wait for season 2! Ill see you on the 14th with a thousand of my closest friends!

I really hope they will make it as you wrote it. It isn't too long and expensive, it's BATTLE OF THE BLACKWATER! This episode can make into HBO's most epic achievements. Yeah you sacrifise the money, make episode longer, blah blah. So what? It is the only chance to show this epic battle so why not make it BIG! Write your name in history of television or just another good quality episode?

Awesome!
I just read that chapter a week ago, for who knows maybe the eighth time or so. I was wondering consciously how the folks at HBO (television or not) are gonna handle it. Either it's a nightmare budget scene or some close-up reaction shots with faint glow on Davos's face! Can't wait to see it happen!

Well, I'm super-eager. As much as I love all the political maneuvering, the Blackwater was the massive payoff of all of Tyrion's painstaking preparations. It's always nice to see a solid payoff when a character works so hard. Granted, I remember what happens after and during, but still.

I'm on a SOI&F excitement overload, I think, what with season 2 a ways off and Dance with Dragons just around the corner.

Greetings from Croatia
Mr. Martin,

I'm looking forward to the second season, and especially to your creative inputs onto series. :)

Greetings from Croatia. You have pretty big fanbase here, and we are strongly hoping that portions of second season would be filmed in Croatia. :)

Donations?
People on winter-is-coming.net are talking about somehow setting up some kind of donation to help fund the Blackwater episode. Even one of the shows producers commented on it and told us not to set anything up on our own, but that he would get back with us!

Doing the Blackwater
There's a thousand Irish reservist soldiers (south of Belfast) who remember how to swing a sword from Braveheart... and a country that still has extensive tax breaks for film and TV, plus a 'can-help' attitude to bring production here.

Just saying, George :)

Don't Adapt to the Series
I love the Series and hope it continues for many seasons to come, but as I have said, I worry at the temptation to adapt your future writing to the series and not the other way around. Don't do it! You and the other fine writers and directors have done (and I know will do) a masterful job in the adaptation. Let that continue and don't make the books conform to the needs of the TV, that's the wrong way around.

Coincidentally I am just about to re-read the chapters on the Battle of the Blackwater.

Question about Sansa
I know this is probably confidential information, but I'll ask anyway: will the Hound ever use his nickname for Sansa, "Little Bird", in the upcoming season? :)
