On the Road Again

I survived Comicon... though I'm still not quite sure how.

San Diego was amazing, but damn, they kept me busy. I will try and write more about it when I get home, but right now it's all a blur.

BUt now, I'm in LA. Big booksigning tomorrow night at the B&N at the Grove. Can LA top the 1800 who turned out for the Union Square signing in NYC? Turn in a ouple days from now and find out.

And for those of you who can't make the Grove event, we stopped thrice along the way and I signed stock at Warwick Books in La Jolla and at Book Soup and Skyline Books in LA. Autographed copies are on their shelves now, waiting for you to pick 'em up. First come, first served.

I can't wait for the 29th! (If I try to stick around for the signing I'm bringing my copy of Tuf since I can't make up my mind about my ASoIaF novels) But I do have a question. My ticket says SATURDAY July 29th, it's Friday, right?
Jul. 26th, 2011 03:10 pm (UTC)
the signing is indeed on FRIDAY July 29th - maybe the bookstore's computer that prints out the tickets has a glitch.

I thought you were dead! I am glad to see you!

Hey George, I'm going to your signing in Redwood city and I can't wait to meet you. A dance with dragons was great! It is setup to perfectly for the next book and your my favorite writer of all time, I am stoked.

Have fun in LA GRRM.

Oh and by the way, the NFL lockout is no longer a thing! Looking forward to your football posts every Monday/Tuesday/whenever the hell you have time to talk football.

Comicon was an exhausting blur for me, so I can't even imagine how it was for you!

It was lovely seeing you, however briefly. Thank you for signing my Clegane banner, it's hanging on my wall as I type this. And I hope you enjoy (after you get home and get some sleep!) the book the Podcast of Ice and Fire made you as much as we enjoyed making it!

Much Love Always,

LA can only top NYC if it has both higher numbers, and at least 2 fans showing up in costumes. They need not be Tyrell themed (but it can't hurt, either.)

A friend of mine and I have tickets for your Redwood City reading. Can't wait to see you!

So George, I hear stories of a cool Dark Sword diorama and spilled coffee??
So George, I hear rumors of a certain skilled painter/diorama builder who brought in a Dark Sword diorama to your signing in CA yesterday. And of a coffee spill?

I have to take partial blame as I encouraged Bill to bring it to show you as you are a big miniature fan. Once I get better pics of the piece, I can post up as well.

Have a good time sir and know you will be missed at Gen Con Indy next week...

It might have been water in that purple mug, but it got upended on his arm. He bounced back, though!

Had the opportunity to see you speak at the "Putting the EPIC in Epic Fantasy" panel. It was quite enjoyable! Unfortunately I wasn't able to make any of the signings, but I'm holding out hope for an SDCC appearance next year!

The Grove is ten minutes from me, but I can't have you writing all over my Kindle.

I notice that you don't mention anyone being under the weather...a good sign since your trips during the HBO shootings had someone in your troup nursing the sniffles or tummy aches for most of the past year.

Now that I've finished Dance I just don't see how you can finish all the stories with Winter. Winter is Coming, but I expect to see the Spring thaw as well.

Thank you.
Finished Dance with Dragons the other day and I must say it was truly amazing. Great work. Thank you for sharing this world with us.

I live in northern Ontario, Canada (manning the wall!). How would I go about procuring an autographed set?
Jul. 26th, 2011 03:06 pm (UTC)
the 'easiest' way
is to bring your set to a convention that George attends. Sometimes you can find signed sets on ABE or other book sites, but the prices, especially for first editions, are getting pretty damn high.

Check George's website for his scheduled and confirmed convention and other appearances. http://www.georgerrmartin.com/appearances.html

Right now, there's NO plans for any Canadian cons in the near future.

Maybe you could find a friend who's going to a convention like this year's Reno WorldCon to get the books signed for you? I can assure you that most book dealers will have plenty of copies of all the books in various printings and editions if you don't want to trust your original copies to the post.

Thanks for manning the Wall, just remember to burn any bodies you find on the Other side and you'll be fine.

Nearly finished Dance
It must be quite risky writing these books, your ears must burn so badly when readers get to certain chapters and start cursing you!

It looks like I'll most probably finish the book before Tor manage to fix the appalling kindle version that they released. It's not easy following a conversation when paragraphs have been mixed together, so replies appear to being said by the character being replied to.

Hopefully the next book will have the ebook produced to the same standard as the print version.

Re: Nearly finished Dance
TOR published a Bantam book on Kindle? I think you mean Bantam/Random House.
Jul. 26th, 2011 11:49 pm (UTC)
Re: Nearly finished Dance
To be fair to Tor, it's Bantam that publishes ASoIaF (in the U.S.; HarperCollins Voyager is the UK publisher).

Re: Nearly finished Dance
Whoever published it, that's too bad!

FWIW, my kindle copies of books 1-4 seem pretty much identical to my paperback copies, and the only strange thing I noticed about my kindle ADWD is that the maps are unreadable, with the ones of the North and South of Westeros that I saw in the hardcover missing altogether (found all 5 maps in a pdf online: problem solved!). Maybe your copy has a glitch in it or something?

The book absolutely blew me away. Loved it!

courage for the signing tonight!

...And The Road Goes Ever On
Well good news! You survived Comic-Con because of the love your fans have for you (boy is that corny or what??!?!)! Seriously though, you ar loved and appreciated a whole bunch! Keep on this good road!

Continued strength and health, and success! You deserve it!

I have two copies of A Dance with Dragons because two different people gifted me with it, knowing that I've been eagerly awaiting.

But I'm writing this now to tell you that I just finished a chapter about three quarters of the way through the book, and I had to put it down. I almost (almost!) don't want to read the rest. Not for a bad reason, but because I don't want to be finished with the book so soon!

Your writing is so beautiful and your stories so absorbing. Hurry, hurry and write the next one, will you?

Thank you for sharing your wonderful art with the world!

Thanks so much for coming to Comic-Con! I was the nerdy girl dressed as Robin who asked you to sign her boob, LOL. Made my whole damn weekend. XD

So, uh...happy about football being back?
I know you're a big fan of the NFL, particularly the Jets, and just wanted to know what your two cents are on the return of football. High hopes for your men in green, I'll wager! (Browns fan here)

Book tour
Looking forward to seeing you at your stop in Lexington, KY. Consider checking out the Castle Post in Lexington -- strange that there is a castle in the middle of Kentucky. Should you find yourself there, I would love to buy the world traveler an adult beverage.

Fans fund the battle on the Blackwater?
hi all--

I am sorry I missed out on the Grove signing--and I am super bummed I missed out on the Comic-Con session. I was at the con, but there were literally 4,000 people ahead of me an hour before the deal...so..

Anyway, I keep hearing about how there is no way HBO can afford to pay for the big naval battle that takes place in "Clash". I was curious--have you thought about generating the funds from the fans themselves? You could list the people who contribute in the credits, either on the show or on the DVD/Blu-Ray release (or both, of course).

I don't know--it's just that the battle really shows how awesome Tyrion is, and the making of the chain is a great plot point throughout the book--what is it for?!?!--and it seems a shame not to have it in the series. Is there an estimate of how much it would cost? We could leverage a sight like Kickstarter and spread the work using Facebook and twitter.

I'd be happy to try to manage this--what do you all think?
