Now It Can Be Told

The HOLLYWOOD REPORTER has broken the story, so I'm now free to comment on a juicy little nugget of GAME OF THRONES news that I've been sitting on for a week or so:

Neil Marshall has been signed to direct an episode for our second season.

For those of you who have been living under a rock for the past ten years or so, Marshall is the director of CENTURION, of DOG SOLDIERS, and -- especially -- of THE DESCENT, which I think may well be the best horror film of the past twenty years or so. (Do NOT confuse it with the sequel, a much weaker film). GAME OF THRONES will be his first foray into television.

And my comment?

That sound you hear is a high-pitched squeal of delight.

I love Marshall's work, in case you couldn't tell.

And what makes this especially exciting is that the episode he'll be directing is... mine. Yes. He's going to directing episode nine, "Blackwater." The Battle of the Blackwater.

I still don't how the hell we can possibly afford to do half of what I put into that script, but if anyone can pull off my budget-busting battle, it's Marshall.

I thought CENTURION was an excellent Robert E. Howard adaptation. He does a great job taking relatively small budgets and expanding them. Give him the harbor at Dubrovnik, and he'll give you the battle.

I have been a fan of Marshall's work for about a decade now (oh wow, really?) and yes, "The Descent" is easily the best horror film I've seen in a really long time. I was thrilled to hear he was directing an episode and considering his capable hands with a good battle scene, I am even more thrilled to discover it's the episode you're writing.

Oh that's so cool. The Descent is one of the few films I've seen that totally made me forget I was in a cinema and therefore scared the crap out of me. Relentless film.

Budget stretching

I totally get why George is so excited about Neil. After watching his genre mashup, Doomsday, that picture looks like it was created for 3x its $33 million dollar budget. I loved that movie, even though critically it wasn't appreciated. It's post-apocolyptic slash medieval mayhem(!) at its finest.

I just spent an hour talking to my boyfriend about A Dance With Dragons and I wanted a chance to say that it is my favorite book since Game of Thrones. I know that I probably won't get an answer and that you hear this often but your writing is amazing and I love the depth that you give your characters. I made myself read as slowly as possible to make the book last a bit longer since I know it will be a while before the next one comes out but when it does I can almost guarantee that it will be my 30ish girly scream of delight that you will be hearing all the way from Georgia. I'm excited about the prospect of Marshall directing episode nine and if the second season is half as good as the first I'm going to sob when it's over! And if I am a very, very lucky lady you will be at DragonCon next September and I will have some small chance of getting your autograph on my book. Alas, I won't be at Dragoncon next year... or any year, so long as it remains on Labor Day weekend. But we've discussed that in detail in other threads.

WHich is not to say that I won't pass through Atlanta some time, maybe on my next book tour.

I am completely against trolling and despise it when people comment to simply cause a stir, but I must ask how this warrants excitement. The episode he shoots will be great because the material, the casting, and the production team is great. Let's not forget that this is the man who made Doomsday and Centurion (2 dreary stinkers) after The Descent.
