The RPG is Coming

Cyanide Studios and Atlus Entertainment have just unveiled a trailer for their forth-coming GAME OF THRONES videogame RPG. If you missed the official premiere and presentation in Paris,
here's a look.

I'll be the first to admit that I have not played a lot of videogames myself. It's not that I don't enjoy them; rather, I enjoy them too damned much. Parris often says that Sid Meier owes her, seeing as how I lost a novel to RAILROAD TYCOON and another one to PIRATES. But looking at this, I can't help be impressed by how far game graphics have come.

I haven't played the game myself yet, but the Cyanide gang has visited me a couple of times in Santa Fe to give us presentations, and discuss details of game play and background. They are presenting original stories here, with characters of their own creation, but it was important to them (and to me) that they get the look and feel of Westeros right, and I think they have. Their enthusiasm and passion for this project is palpable.

This preview has me very excited. It's another way to visit Westeros, for those of you who can't get enough, and maybe the game will even help fill some of those long years between books.

Ohh, I love videogames and this would definitely be one I'd like to play. I'll keep an eye on this, to get is as soon as it's released! *o* It looks really cool~ :D

By the way, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Mr. Martin. And thank you for being such an awesome writer and blogger. ;)

Best regards from your Chilean fan,

Hopeful but....
I'm definitely looking forward to playing this but I am very skeptical about its quality. These graphics, while vastly superior to games from 10 years ago, are not great by 2011 standards. Making a video game is a huge job, every bit as big as a movie or television show. Having an unproven studio and a tiny publisher handle this is akin to having a small production company develop the Game of Thrones TV series and hoping the SyFy channel picks it up. This probably should have been entrusted to a more proven developer.
Fingers crossed though.

Re: Hopeful but....
But graphics are not the end of it. There are games with wonderful graphics that are just a bore, and games with awful graphics you can't get enough of.

The graphics are good enough not to be a turn off, based on that trailer. Now the only thing I personally am gonna keep my fingers crossed for, is the gameplay.

Is there an ETA on this? :D
Dec. 21st, 2011 09:40 pm (UTC)
I remember reading Cyanide Studio was aiming for an April 2012 release (possibly because season 2?). I also read EA let the rights expire to ASoIaF a while back due to lack of demand. I bet they're hitting themselves right now... lol

Wow, that looks great! I worry that sales may be undercut by Skyrim having a similar northern setting though.

But if there's a 360 version, I'll be having it!

It looks dated. Not in a bad way mind you, but this seriously looks like a four, maybe five year old game.
BUT, graphics does not make a game, and I for one are pretty darn stoked that they've actually devoted a lot of time to get the characters and the setting right.
(and, do I spot a Red Priest? With a flaming sword?!)

Look's amazing! Can't wait! I just finished A Dance with Dragons today and am already experiencing Westerosi withdrawal! Looking forward to this and even more so, The Winds of Winter. Happy holidays!

Looks very impressive! Although AC: Revelations has slighly more realistic graphics. RThe set looks very real but the people's moves are a bit betraying they're digital.

Is the guy in red robes Beric? He lit a sword on his hand...

I think it looks great and I'd be thrilled to play it.

Did my eyes deceive me....
...or did one of the characters in that trailer look a lot like you, George? :)

Re: Did my eyes deceive me....
I was just going to post that myself! Yes, at 1:52 there is a man with glasses and a beard with a very familiar smile!

Wait - new story, co-written by GRRM that parallels events in the books? Just how closely did you write this story?

I will agree the graphics are lacking, but they can more than be made up for with an awesome story / great game play / reveals/events.

Atlus may not be a huge developer but this may turn out to be a really good thing. I've played some of their other offerings (Demon's Souls (CRITICALLY Acclaimed) and 3D Dot game Heroes...) and they are certainly a capable developer. Do we really want this developed by an EA studio?? I think no!

They have their own graphical style (kinda japanameish) which is yes, somewhat dated... but I'm still excited for this title... particularly what kind of story is contained within... just how awesome is the story and are there multiple outcomes?

Re: story...
I did not write the story, nor co-write the story.

The development team at Cyanide wrote the story.

"Parris often says that Sid Meier owes her, seeing as how I lost a novel to RAILROAD TYCOON and another one to PIRATES."

To be honest, Sid Meier's Pirates is one of the top five games ever made, in my opinion.

As a long-time CIV player, (CIV2 is still the best! The rest got over-complicated) my wife would like all of those game-years back too! Thanks for the feedback about Pirates. I've often considered buying it, but saw too many iffy reviews.

GRRM! You're in the game?! I saw you in there at 1:52! :)

That looks AWESOME! I'll buy it if it's a console game :)

You know, the new Elder Scrolls game (it's a huge hit) has a BUNCH of SOIAF refrences in it.

XBoX and PS3 releases are planned, as well as PC.

Well, it´s pretty but i think it´s not as good as it could be. A bit old, i think. What a pity that bethesda was too busy making skyrim (and i have played, for i can tell you that is the best game until the date, for this kind of RPG games). Such a pity.

But, hey, it´s cool. Pretty amazing guy, 1:52.

Another thing that caught my attention was the music for this trailer, taken directly from the final scene of the series. Such a lovely music, this song, perfect for that scene, it couldn´t be better. Wow.

You got a cameo in the trailer! Glasses and all! Was that a joke or do you really have a cameo in the game? That's funny!

Music similar to HBO theme

Awesome freaking trailer! It gave me goosebumps, and I am not a fan of video games per se...but the trailer coupled with Ramin Djawadi's soundtrack was great...puts me in the mood for the upcoming DVD/Blue-ray release and the Second Season of the show, and the enjoyment of the books as always!

Was that a glimpse of Mr. Martin...in the game...alas my eyes deceived me?

The graphics are okay, but certainly nothing to write home about. For an example of a very beautiful game (all debates about its story and linearity aside), check out Final Fantasy XIII or its upcoming sequel. That level of graphics are what games should look like today. This game does look a bit dated.

More importantly, I'm concerned about the lack of females in this game. We only briefly saw a couple. I would hope some of them might be playable. I'm really, really tired of video games being all about men, and whatever females you might find being little more than hood ornaments. And I also hope that whatever female characters they present won't just be sex objects, but characters as interesting and as independent as Arya Stark, Asha Greyjoy, and Daenarys Targaryen.

George Avatar!

Is that an Avatar of you at 1:51 in the video??

Love it! Can't wait!!

Okay we get it....
...George is in the trailer. You would have to blind to miss it.
