My friends at HBO have just released some photos from the second season of GAME OF THRONES, scheduled to premiere on April 1. I thought I'd share them with you.

Here's a first look at some of our new characters,

More to come...

Excellent - thank you for sharing!
Especially love Gwendoline Christie as Brienne. She looks fabulous. I'll admit I did not picture Davos that way at all (more Inigo Montoya from the Princess Bride) but I can go with it. Looking forward to season 2 with great excitement!

Re: Excellent - thank you for sharing!
Same thing here. Not that I don't like Davos' TV version, mind you, but so far he is one of the most different characters from what I pictured from the books.

Nice! Brienne and Davos are looking quite grand:)
Feb. 9th, 2012 08:49 pm (UTC)
Ooooh! Excited about Brienne!
Feb. 9th, 2012 08:53 pm (UTC)
I really like Brienne, I just hope she's tall.
Feb. 9th, 2012 09:02 pm (UTC)
Gwendoline Christie (the actress) is 6'3". No worries there.
Feb. 9th, 2012 08:54 pm (UTC)
Brienne looks better than I thought...

thank you!

Feb. 9th, 2012 09:06 pm (UTC)
Ohhh, the Onion Knight. Perfect perfect perfect. I'm chuffed.
Feb. 9th, 2012 09:12 pm (UTC)
BRIENNE! She looks awesome!
Feb. 9th, 2012 09:45 pm (UTC)
Heh. I know that after the announcement, people were worried that Gwendoline Christie was "too pretty" to play Brienne.

I think it's safe to say that the makeup folks are due for another Emmy nomination here.

Am I the only one who doesn't think Brienne looks that ugly here?

Feb. 10th, 2012 12:41 am (UTC)
It's not that she looks that ugly by modern standards. But by Westeros standards, she looks way too masculine, is way too tale, and not busty enough. I don't think her hair is thin enough in that shot, but, hey - it is only one picture.

I mean, given how Tyrion is *supposed* to look, there's no way we were getting a seriously "ugly" Brienne. She's never flat-out described as "ugly" anyway, except by, well, assholes - she's certainly not deformed or anything. But "butch" is not an adjective that your average Westeros woman is going to find complimentary.

Actually, the very first description we get of Brienne is from Cat's POV (certainly not an asshole) and she thinks to herself something along the lines of "is there anything in the world sadder than an ugly woman?"
Feb. 11th, 2012 01:33 am (UTC)
Brienne sure sounds ugly by modern standards in the book (see Wikipedia's description below). There's more going on with her than merely being a somewhat masculine woman. And she is, in fact, considered flat out ugly by non-assholes like Cat.

"Brienne is abnormally large and strong for a woman, and exceeds most men in size. She has large, very blue eyes that appear trusting and guileless, but they are her only attractive feature. She is extremely broad-shouldered, but has virtually no bust. Her face is broad and coarse, with a nose that has been broken several times. Her mouth is too wide, with prominent and crooked teeth and lips so plump they seem swollen. Her hair is the color of dirty straw and her face is mottled with freckles."

Feb. 11th, 2012 06:52 pm (UTC)
Maybe I'm damaged by living in Sweden or something but yes. That would rank as ugly. Are you looking for straight-up deformed here? Lady looks like a dude. Whether or not she makes a pretty boy doesn't really matter to her contemporary society. Comparing to Arya and Tyrion, she's definately the one hitting closest to the mark re: unattractiveness.

Look at what Gwendoline Christie usually looks like. Then back to this. Back to Gwendoline, then back to this. The lady is now a self-loathing androgynous (and not in the bish way) brutish warrior with what looks like a chronic bad hair and skin day.

But not only that, she looks strong and capable. Not strong as in "strong independent woman", but more like in she could take anyone of us commenters, snap us as a twig and with just by the strength of her arms use our torso as an anti-Lannister WMD.

I for one am hella impressed. And no, that lady wouldn't have dudes throwing themselves at her in our world even if she had money and power (which was the main draw for Brienne's past suitors). The world of AGOT isn't really a nice or fair place, it's pretty terriballs. Brienne's story reflects this more than many others, and I already feel like I'm liking Brienne more having seen this shot.

(Yes, my tone here is terrible and I'm sorry but I'm trying to make a point here. We say she's not ugly enough because most of us are brought up to not be dicks. Not so in Westerosi nobility.)
Feb. 10th, 2012 03:09 am (UTC)
No. But you know how it works on TV versus real life:

Ugly in real life is average looking on TV.
Average looking in real life is pretty on TV.
Pretty in real life is gorgeous on TV.
Gorgeous in real life is inhumanly beautiful on TV.

(That said, I love her costume and expression.)
Feb. 10th, 2012 07:31 pm (UTC)
You're not the only one. I think she looks quite attractive in a boyish sort of way. Not like I imagined her from reading the books, but I more or less expected that. It's a different medium, after all.
Feb. 14th, 2012 06:23 am (UTC)
I don't think she looks ugly, but I find women in armor very attractive, so I'm biased. However, I am glad the makeup/hair people tried to make her look far away from conventional beauties like Danerys.

Brienne, WOW
I was skeptical about the Brienne casting, since I thought the actress was way too pretty. I was hoping for a Charlize Theron/Monster treatment, but I wasn't sure it was gonna happen.

Glad to see I was wrong. Brienne looks perfect! (Well, she doesn't have the large blue eyes, but only a supreme nerd would rage at that. ;)

Those are great pics posted so far. I hope we'll see Jaqen soon!

I must say you have chosen Brienne very very well! She is just like I imagined her, perfect! And Davos Seaworth (by the way, I love his name) is also as I imagined him (except that the fingers missing are in the wrong hand :P)
The only actor that is not as I imagined him is Patrick Malahide, as Balon Greyjoy. I pictured Balon in a completely different way. Yet, if Patrick plays his part well, I will be happy! :)

When I saw that pic of Gwendoline Christie as Brienne I actually said "holy fuck" out loud.

I CANNOT BELIEVE how accurate the casting is! BRAVO!
Feb. 10th, 2012 12:24 am (UTC)
Oh Brienne is good!
Feb. 10th, 2012 02:36 am (UTC)
Brienne is perfect.
Feb. 10th, 2012 02:53 am (UTC)
Am I the only one who doesn't believe that Brienne (the character, not Gwendoline Christie) isn't actually ugly? I imagine she is a handsome butch girl...but so far out of the beauty standards that no one can see her beauty...also because of that she is awkward and without a lot self-confidence...which doesn't help.
Feb. 10th, 2012 02:55 am (UTC)
Brienne looks pretty cool, I imagined her slightly different (isn't that always the way w/ adaptions tho?) and I imagined Davos about 20 years younger, in appearance. Nevertheless, awesome!
Feb. 10th, 2012 03:52 am (UTC)
BRIENNE! Can't wait!!
Feb. 10th, 2012 03:55 am (UTC)
Brienne FTW!
Mr. Martin, I have to tell you, when you announced the casting of Brienne, I flinched internally, because while *your* Brienne is such a fully realized, living breathing creation, casting her with a real life actress seemed so difficult.

Ms. Cristie looks awesome all scrubbed down and armored up. Huzzah!

Oh my seven hells!

"A Beauty! A Beauty!"

Guess they did away with the Rainbow Guard, but otherwise, perfect.
Feb. 10th, 2012 02:50 pm (UTC)
my guess is that this still is a costume from after Cat spirits her away and garbs her.

but damn, she's an amazing fit. that picture is priceless; the expression alone...

I sure hope so, but there was a quick glimpse of her in the trailer where she appeared to be fighting someone (so, SPOILERS, it was almost certainly the scene in Renly's tent) and she didn't appear to be wearing her blue armor then, either :( Still, if that's the only change I'll be more than happy.

Mr Martin so glad that this whole series of shots especially Brienne and Mel capture your amazing description of these wonderful characters. Role on S2.

Can see the depiction now
Was not sure how Brienne played by Gwendoline Christie-Helen Sloan was going to come off, but I see it now. Good make up!

Good Goddess. Brienne looks E.X.A.C.T.L.Y how I imagined her. You must be very excited, George.

I just hope the actress playing Brienne can sell her sword fights and make me believe she is an awesome swordsman. There's nothing worse than a female role that is supposed to be "tough," and the fights end up looking very forced and fake
Feb. 11th, 2012 12:38 am (UTC)
Brienne is perfect. And Davos? He's adorable. I bet he'll get a lot of love. It's so good to have a honourable, down-to-earth man among all the snakes and spiders...
Feb. 11th, 2012 02:01 pm (UTC)
I imagined Davos a bit younger than that, but after looking at that picture for a moment or two, I'm fully convinced. He truly looks the part of a grizzled old veteran who has no trouble speaking plainly and honestly to anyone, even his king. Really looking forward to seeing him in the second season, as Davos has grown to be one of my favorite characters.

Also: Brienne looks gorram perfect for the part. I'm constantly amazed at how well this show has been cast.

wow they transformed Gwendoline Christie into Kara Thrace ;)
Feb. 13th, 2012 07:48 pm (UTC)
Gwendoline Christie's casting is the best thing ever to happen to the show, at least concerning her looks, we'll have to wait for her acting (Well you won't Mr. Martin :))
Feb. 14th, 2012 01:20 am (UTC)
Her audition was brilliant. She was Brienne. Period.
Feb. 14th, 2012 03:55 pm (UTC)
On a related note, could you please tell me how her name is pronounced, if it's not a secret? I've heard a lot of different versions and it's quite confusing, I thought you might want to clarify that. Thank you
