No, No, No

thumbs down
I was drinking my morning coffee when the headline flashed across the bottom of the screen. That sound you heard was me choking and sputtering.

My Jets have given up two perfectly good draft picks for Tim Tebow, the worst quarterback in the National Football League.

Gak.

What the hell are they thinking over there at Gang Green central?

Mark Sanchez is not, as yet, Eli Manning, but he is a talented quarterback with a good arm and he completes more than fifty per cent of his passes, none of which can be said for Tebow. The last thing he needs is a stadium full of Timomaniacs screaming for Tebow every time a pass falls incomplete. The divisions in the Jets locker room last season were well documented. THis is just going to make those problems a thousand times worse.

Nor do I think that Tebow's conspicuous piety will play well in the Big Apple. This is the city that once embraced Broadway Joe. Tebow would fit better in... well, if Branson, Missouri had an NFL team, that would be a perfect fit.

I must say that I just don't get it. The general knock on Sanchez is his accuracy and consistency, so he is to be backed up (I assume) by Tim Tebow? Throw in the chemistry issues and this could get very ugly.

The salary cap is the only positive I can see.

Not a good fit... AT ALL.
I'm not Tebow fan, and I've made it pretty well known to my circle of friends about how overrated I feel that he's been. Bringing him to the Jets takes Sanchez, who's only a YEAR OLDER and has far more experience, and places him in difficult career territory. Sanchez faces the hated Patriots twice per year, Tebow buckled under pressure.

I'm no Sanchez fan, either, but at least he has the poise of an NFL QB. Tebow has stars in his eyes.

Improved lockerroom
Maybe they got Tebow in to improve the team spirit. LT claimed that the lockerroom was in disarray last year for the jets.

This is just bizarre. I can't understand why they would do this. It reads like a publicity stunt to me.

Ah, George
It's hard to watch such an intelligent man act so, so foolish. The kid has done nothing but win his entire life, while simultaneously lifting every player around him to do things they would never have been capable of. I'm very much looking forward to watching you eat crow next season. I predict many "Well, I never thought it possible, but he did it again!" posts.

I was waiting for this.
When my wife,(a Jersey Girl and Jets and Giants fan), told me this news this morning, the first thing out of my mouth was, "I want to see George's blog post."

As a football fan, I feel your pain. NY loves controversy and press, and I guess they are getting it, just not good draft picks or talent.

As a Broncos fan, I must humbly add the following.

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!

Um, well I guess you still have that trophy on the NFC side of the field.

Gotta say, I'm glad he's not a Packer (why were they even in the running/talks? Absurd). But I figured he'd be an easy shoo-in in Jacksonville. Talk about a franchise that could actually use the media circus...

Hold the phones!
You could be saved by Divine Intervention, George! There appears to be a possible snag in the Tebow trade...

Re: Hold the phones!
Yeah, apparently the contract requires for Elway to be paid 30 pieces of silver if Tebow is traded.

Best Attribute: He's not Sanchez
You're looking at this all the wrong way George. The Jets took a risk making Sanchez their franchise QB. It looked okay the first year...when the Jets were running over 50% of their plays on the ground (highest in the league that year) and had Thomas Jones still in his prime. They made the AFC championship again next year but let's face it, Sanchez did not get better. Then last year with their run game the worst its been in a while, he was terrible. Terrible, George. Single-handedly lost you guys some games that would have landed you in the playoffs. And the worst part is he lost the respect of the locker room.

Tim Tebow is a lot of things, too many things for a pros/cons list here. But he did a lot with much worse offensive weapons than the Jets have and he's been a natural leader since day 1, even though it was clear he played for a management that did not want him. Oh yeah, he's also maybe THE GREATEST COLLEGE PLAYER OF ALL TIME who has had less than one year to start with no training camp going in. So give him a chance is all I'm saying. The Jets will give him a chance...probably two years and then if he's not the savior of the franchise the QB carousel will move on. As an unbiased observer of the Jets (well maybe a little biased as a Bills fan) that seems to be how it works in NYC. They give you the world when you sign but if you don't win for them quick, you're out.

OTOH, consider that Tebow's particular brand of arrogance is likely to get knocked right out of him by the lumps he'll take in the New York market. Post and Daily News readers may be social conservatives, but they're usually conservative Catholics who remember when evangelical Christians didn't consider them human, less alone Christian.

There are a lot of ways this could play out.

Ha. The very first thing I thought when I saw the news was, "What does George R. R. Martin think about this?!" You pretty much summed up my thoughts on the matter. Hilarious. He should've headed to Jacksonville just for the Florida tie: he would've been very popular.

I'm a little late to the party, but I just saw the headline and thought "What about Sanchez? Oh man. Mr. Martin is going to be pissed."

Thank the gods they didn't bring him to Boston. I'd have hit something. Sorry you're stuck with him!

The Broncos just became the first NFL team to sacrifice a virgin in the hopes of winning a Superbowl.

Leave it to the Jets
I have to admit, I was thrilled when I saw you had a post on this because your reaction was similar to mine when they suggested Tebow might get picked up by the Pats. In the end, Belichick has the smarts to avoid this distraction like the plague. I truly feel sorry for you that the Jets don't. That being said...HA-HA!

Tag - You're it.
While I have some glimmer of empathy, schadenfreude is my primary feeling. As a non-football fan who lives in Denver, I am just glad he is gone. Maybe he won't be TheMostImportantPersonEver no matter where I go.

Tebow prayed to God for the Broncos to win the Super Bowl next season. Denver signed Peyton Manning and traded away Tebow. Sometimes God does answer prayers.

I don't follow the NFL, but I am a keen follower of Australia's equivalent in Australian Rules Football, and I share your bewilderment at times when the team I follow make a move I, in my personal judgement, deem to be totally incomprehensible. I'm still getting over the pain of giving up pick 19 for a player some years ago. The guy was no good when they picked him up, he remained no good and has since been cut from the list. I weep when I look at what the team who received the pick did with it.

Jordie?
What, you didn't like Jordan McMahon?
Would have preferred a little Callan Ward in your yellow and black diet?

Of course, I may have picked your team wrong - but me thinks not!

Only the Jets...
Could trade for Tebow and forget to read the contract (a small detail of a $5 million payment back to Denver upon the trade). In this case, maybe their screw-up is for the best - the Jets may be saved from themselves if they void the trade.

Massive mistake.
George,
Any chance you could knock out books 6 and 7 over the summer so I'll have something to occupy myself with while Tebow is taking snaps this fall? Tough day to be a Jets fan!

Tebow
In listening this morning to Siriusxm NFL Radio, Adam Schein and Rich Gannon agreed that the JETS were the perfect team for Tebow. He will be there for the wildcat offense, which he can probably run to more effect than most QBs, he can be a legitimate running threat out of the backfield and can throw the ball. He can also be a good, hard working disciplined influence on the circus they have there. So this may not be as bad as you think.
