Last Day in Lisbon

Portugal was grey and rainy, but the fans here could not have been warmer. We had amazing turnouts in both Lisbon and Porto, I did a hundred interviews and defaced thousands of books, stocked up on port and ginja, and now itºs back to London for a few more days. Come Wednesday I will be flying home... just in time for the NFL Draft!

Memory plays tricks when reaching certain levels of excitment :(
Hello George!
It was great having you in Portugal. I had never attended such an event before, and it was quite an enriching baptism of fire. I was at the Lisbon Q&A/Book signing, and as the subject of this message refers, my mind played a trick on me due to the complete state of excitement I was in, and so I forgot to apply for a question.
By now I have completed reading "A Dance With Dragons", and one question frequently comes to mind:
When laying down the visual mind map of Westeros and the rest of the Ice & Fire world, do you seek or get inspiration from certain locations/cities of the real world? While Westeros is clearly a knitting of the medieval Europe, and there you can't really point out a specific location, in certain places "across the sea",we have cities like for example Braavos, which immediately remind me of Venice (Italy), with its canals, being established as a commercial and banking power and multi-cultural metropolis.
There is Volantis, an exotic and old city, divided in half by a great river, and I can clearly see traces and hints of Istanbul (or Constantinople) in Turkey.
And the great cities of Slavers Bay, with its high pyramids and brutal slave based economy and way of living, which immediately remind me of the City-States of the mesoamerican cultures such as the Mayas.
I hope you find the time to answer this, and that you have a safe return back home.
All the best!
Cheers from Portugal

Lisbon signing
Me and my boyfriend went to the signing at Lisbon, it was crowded and we had to wait like 2 and a half hours to have our books signed, but the wait was totally worth it! You were so nice and humorous, we had a blast listening to you answering those questions :) thank you!

I'm so pleased that you liked my country! I can honestly tell you what a pleasure it was for me to meet you and to take a picture with you. You are truly a inspiration to everyone! Thank you for coming to our Lusitanian Lands really! :)

Hello =)

I've had the wonderful opportunity of being in Oporto and I'm very happy for having my books signed. I thank you a lot :) However, it was a pity there had been little time for talk. Anyway, it was very nice to meet you. Hope I'll have another opportunity and maybe this time I'll share a little more words with you.

Come to the London worldcon in 2014. Signings are noi place to share words. Cons are much better for that.

Lisbon signing
Hello my name is Eduarda, I attended the autograph session in Lisbon on April 18. If you remember, I'm the girl who fell down the stairs
In the session I forgot to ask you my question, and I confess that right now I'm starting to read the 5th book "A storm of swords."
My question is, why he decided to kill Kal Drogo?
I await your response and disponbilidade for too long already bound by these magnificent books that gave the world :D

"just in time for the NFL Draft!"
George, I cannot wait for your insights and thoughts after the draft. I'm still sick over the Tebow deal. Feel a bit better knowing I'm not the only fan suffering, though. What the hell were the high-ups of the Jets thinking?

I'm having a blowout fiesta at mi casa Friday night of the draft (I live in the great Southwest as well). I'll be drinking like Tyrion in your latest volume in between stuffing my mouth full of homemade tortillas and super hot/your-ass-is-on-fire-the-next-day-but-damn-it's-worth-it queso, complements of the 'missus.

It was a great pleasure having you here in Portugal (specially in Porto) and it was the confirmation of the great writer and really funny person you are.

I turned 21 on the 21st of April so, it was the best birthday gift ever! :)

Just a simple "Thank You!"
I've never really liked books on chivalry, feudal lords, knights and the like. I see your books and the first thing that comes to mind is, "sword... throne... okayyy (rolls eyes)". The books didn't interest me at all, until I saw a picture of Kit Harrington and Emilia Clarke on my classmate's FB account. And then, she mentioned something incest blah blah blah and pretty character names. So, curious as I was, I googled the names, saw Daenerys and Khal Drogo (as they were portrayed on TV), read their love story on wiki (don't blame me sir, I was born a girl), googled the other characters, got headaches reading the names on family trees, etc.

But, I have A Clash of Kings in my hands right now, and three other books are waiting for me at home. I didn't tell my mom how much they cost me (all 5 of them bought at once), lest she behead me. Got to finish this before Season 2 of the series spoils it for me again. *sigh*

Oh, sorry for the long post. Before I forget, a big, big THANK YOU, Ser Martin! Keep it up (my purse is ready for the 6th installment, hehe)!

I'm glad you enjoyed your stay in Portugal! :) I was at the book signing in Porto and I wanted to thank you for being so great and patient with everyone. It really looked like you were interested in people's opinions and preferences and enjoyed listening to everyone. :D

Thank you Mr. Martin
I had the honor of a handshake of Mr. Martin in Oporto (Norteshopping). Oporto diserved a session like the one in Lisbon, with Q & A (the Editors should know that). Portugal is much like Westeros:-) The North is a proud region, where the country was born, and there is much competition and rivalry between North and South (specially in football). Hope Portugal could inspire Mr.Martin in anything in the books to come (a character, a civilization, a city, a name or even a dish of food). I wish Mr. Martin can one day return to Portugal, and have more Port, Ginjas of Obidos, or Madeira... Thank you Mr.Martin.

I may not have been able to meet Tolkien, and J.K.Rowling probably has bad memories of Portugal to ever come to a book signing, but at least I won't die without having meet you George!
And let me tell you, both the signing on Wednesday and the event on Thursday here in Lisbon were really great!

Please, do feel free to come back, even if only on vacations! (by June the weather will be better than California! ;D)

I was in the Porto signing and I must say that, though my time with you was short, it was definitely delightful and worth every second and penny (or should I say euro?) of mine. I will always cherish those few minutes. Thank you so much for taking your time to visit our country and be with the fans. I've said it then and I will say it again, you truly are an inspiration.

Also, I'll take this opportunity to say a little something I have wanted to tell you for a long time: thank you for treating women as people in your books and not as some very weird animals.

I hope to meet you once more! Safe travels :)

Thank you
Thank you George, I hope to see you again the next time you return to Portugal, but considering the large amount of fans this time (I had to wait in line 2.5 hours) maybe next time I will skip the signing up and stick just with the Q&A ;) You have defaced two of my books for wich I thank you, and I just discovered that no one can read your "illegible scrawl" maybe because that scrawl is actually some form of Valyrian glyphs? :)

Thank you George for coming to Porto signing my books and drawings. Hopefully we'll meet again at a convention somewhere! Until then I'll continue to try and create worlds and characters with the lessons learned from yours. Farewell.
