Social Gaming

Spain
I don't know much about social media. I don't have a facebook or twitter account. But I've been told a few people have them, and that some of those people like to play social media games. I'm told the biggest social media game involves running a farm.

Surely, I thought, there must be something one could do on social media that would be more fun that growing turnips and feeding chickens. Like, say, scheming and plotting, murders and marriages, contesting for power.

HBO shared the feeling, and together we have granted the license for a social media game based on GAME OF THRONES to a great new start-up company called Disruptor Beam ((http://disruptorbeam.com/ )) Game development is already well under way.

Jon Radoff, CEO of Disruptor Beam, says:

"This will be the first Facebook game based on the TV series and books and, trust me, this game isn’t just going to be another Farmville! George RR Martin is working very closely with Disruptor Beam to ensure the game will deliver an authentic experience. I can tell you that it will not only be highly story and character-driven, but Game of Thrones Ascent will give you the chance to experience the world from your own perspective and with your own friends."

"Sounds fun, right!? Want to know more? Well, additional information about the game will be released in the coming months, including details about how to participate in a pre-release beta program. To follow its progress, be sure to “like” Game of Thrones Ascent on Facebook (http://facebook.com/gameofthronesascent) or follow on Twitter (https://twitter.com/#!/GoTAscent)."

I saw several early versions of the game demonstrated, and Jon and his designers took great pains to make sure the flavor of the novels is here. I saw alliance building, treachery, marriages, murders, and most of all the constant struggle to be the greatest house in Westeros.

So create a character, pick a liege lord to swear to, and start playing the game the way Tyrion would, because in this game you win or you die.

(No turnips will be involved).

I hope it comes out well...I remember Firaxis saying that Civilization World wasn't going to be another Farmville though, and it really was. So I'll believe it when I see it :)

Finally a reason to leave Skyrim alone and actually pay some attention to Facebook, however minor. I was getting tired of pretending people actually recognised my character as Jaime Lannister. Fear me, damn you! I'm the effing Dragonborn Kingslayer, come on!

This sounds really interesting. I generally don't play games on Facebook (I'm not a fan of the way they usually ask to mine your personal information, or how they mean all your friends flood your inbox with requests) but I might have to make an exception for this one.

You have to stop this - you are killing me. Whenever you post about something I needs have it or must participate in it. YOU are finally coming to a con (ChiCon) that I am able to attend, new LE edition books are available that I had to buy, that sword is looking pretty sweet, a video game I had to have, now this. ok no turnips fine but how about neeps?

Re: Ser Martin You Are Killing Me!!!
Ugh, don't remind me of ChiCon. I can't go because the ticket price is way too high for me at the moment. T_T And I wanted to meet GRRM so bad. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!

That's an exceptionally good choice. Radoff really knows his stuff -- I have his book, _Game On_, and I use it to teach game design students at the university. What he doesn't know about social network games isn't worth knowing about.

Given how much food is referenced in the books, I am shocked by your anti-turnip stance.

sigh
please don't. Facebook does not have much of an upside. Almost everyone I know is disdainful of FB games aka "timewasters". This feels like serious dilution of the license. We had the real time strat game that was OK, the recently released single player RPG, the soon to come MMORPG and now a FB game? Please, please draw a line in somewhere with the exploitation and over-saturation in pop culture of your artwork. Plus it has already lost 19 Billion in market capitalization since it went public a few days ago.

"[I]n this game you win or die."

'Oh, whoops, misplaced that assassination attempt, I guess I'll just - wait - why is my facebook being *deleted*? And who are those shadowy figures at the window? Wh-'

You didn't listen, Facebookers. You win or DIE.

(This sounds fun! :D)

Why is ASOIAF license consistently handed to loosy/untested game developers?
Seriously, Mr. Martin. First, Cyanide, now this? I would have thought that the license is valuable enough by now to attract quality outfits.

An RPG developed by Obsidian, CD Project or, perhaps, Larian would be pure gold, IMHO. Even Bioware, despite their decline. Sigh.

Game of Thrones Ascent
Thanks for the support! There might not be turnips. But rashers of bacon are a definite possibility.
