Social Gaming

I don't know much about social media. I don't have a facebook or twitter account. But I've been told a few people have them, and that some of those people like to play social media games. I'm told the biggest social media game involves running a farm.

Surely, I thought, there must be something one could do on social media that would be more fun that growing turnips and feeding chickens. Like, say, scheming and plotting, murders and marriages, contesting for power.

HBO shared the feeling, and together we have granted the license for a social media game based on GAME OF THRONES to a great new start-up company called Disruptor Beam ((http://disruptorbeam.com/ )) Game development is already well under way.

Jon Radoff, CEO of Disruptor Beam, says:

"This will be the first Facebook game based on the TV series and books and, trust me, this game isn’t just going to be another Farmville! George RR Martin is working very closely with Disruptor Beam to ensure the game will deliver an authentic experience. I can tell you that it will not only be highly story and character-driven, but Game of Thrones Ascent will give you the chance to experience the world from your own perspective and with your own friends."

"Sounds fun, right!? Want to know more? Well, additional information about the game will be released in the coming months, including details about how to participate in a pre-release beta program. To follow its progress, be sure to “like” Game of Thrones Ascent on Facebook (http://facebook.com/gameofthronesascent) or follow on Twitter (https://twitter.com/#!/GoTAscent)."

I saw several early versions of the game demonstrated, and Jon and his designers took great pains to make sure the flavor of the novels is here. I saw alliance building, treachery, marriages, murders, and most of all the constant struggle to be the greatest house in Westeros.

So create a character, pick a liege lord to swear to, and start playing the game the way Tyrion would, because in this game you win or you die.

(No turnips will be involved).

hee hee

Seriously, sounds like a great idea. I'm guessing 'House Littlefinger' isn't a real House, is it? Ah well...

I definitely wish you and the people at Disruptor Beam the best with this, as it sure would be nice if there were some better Facebook games out there. But don't let anyone tell you that Farmville and the like are popular because they are fun - they're popular because they push easy psychological buttons and because they tie in to people's sense of social obligation, and Zynga (creator of Farmville and many other similar games) is incredibly sketchy.

Players of Farmville could use a little bloodshed. They may deep-six their binary agrarian obsession for this offering.

No turnips? How about neeps then? :)

Mr Martin, I am a big fan of yours! Can't wait for the game. :)

I don't even use facebook anymore and haven't for months. When this game is available, I think I'm going to have to start using facebook again

Ah, who needs turnips? We all know onions are the true ruling root veggies.

I usually get bored of those facebook games very quickly, but I think with this one... I'm doomed, just maybe I will need more friends hahaha.
Mr Martin, hope you have a great day, take god are of yourself and don't work so hard, we all want you to keep blowing our minds with all you have to offer! Thank you so much!

Not a fan of the FB game platform...would much rather see a MMO game related to the books and show.

Oh well! I'll at least give it a gander...

This sounds amazing! I don'y play games on Facebook but I would make an effort for this one.

I've got to ask about the Houses, will this be similar to Pottermore where the player is "sorted" or do we choose and create our own Houses?

You'll create your own house, but you'll also swear allegiance to one of the great houses.

Very very interesting. It will be a change to see FB games have depth and an intriguing storyline.

I might actually have to go on FB for a time, and forego a while my Elder Scrolls.

I like the idea, gotta be more fun than what your Farmville dross has to offer . . .

I'm pleasantly amused at a medieval fantasy produced by a skiffy name like "Disruptor Beam".

For Tomman's sake I hope there is a ban on beets as well. This will give me a reason to explore Facebook. It sounds great!

Very exciting to hear about. I'm glad LJ featured your entry, or I wouldn't have known about this. I'll go like it right now! I can't get enough of the series as it is.

You're more than welcome to discuss the game at the gamers community too, if you'd be willing to join us.

I avoid FB games like the plague. Might check this out.
I hope some time in the future a similar game will hit the Android platform :)
May. 25th, 2012 12:05 pm (UTC)
This sounds so much more interesting than what's available! I've been avoiding all of those silly games, but I might have met my match!
May. 25th, 2012 01:29 pm (UTC)
I assume this game is going to be similar to the game that the company that produced House M.D. did... either way I may end up playing this.
May. 26th, 2012 12:51 pm (UTC)
great news

Can't wait for it! Well, my life seems a bit Game of Thrones- oriented right now, so it'll be another way to feed my obsession!

From Poland with love ;)
