Flying High with Wild Cards

I've got all sorts of good news for the Wild Cards fans reading this.

LOWBALL, the twenty-second volume in the overall series, and the second part of the current triad that began with FORT FREAK, is almost complete, and should be going in to Tor very shortly. I will be sure and let you know when a publication date is announced. My thanks to my friend and co-editor Melinda Snodgrass for helping me bring this one home.

And the story continues. I've just signed contracts with Tor with the next Wild Cards book, a full-on mosaic to conclude the triad. This one will be titled HIGH STAKES.

Tor's reprints of the first three volumes of the original series have also done very well (well, WILD CARDS and ACES HIGH have done well, JOKERS WILD is still forthcoming), so I am thrilled to announce that we will be continuing with those as well.

We've just signed for four more volumes. New Tor editions of ACES ABROAD, DOWN & DIRTY, ACE IN THE HOLE, and DEAD MAN'S HAND will be coming your way during the next few years, probably as trade paperbacks. And to make things even more interesting, we will be adding three brand new original stories to ACES ABROAD, just as we did for Tor's reissue of WILD CARDS, volume one.

SFBC4

And Wild Cards readers outside the US are going to have plenty to read as well. After far too long, we finally have a new deal in the United Kingdom, where Gollancz/ Orion will be publishing British editions of WILD CARDS, ACES HIGH, JOKERS WILD, INSIDE STRAIGHT, BUSTED FLUSH, SUICIDE KINGS, FORT FREAK, and LOWBALL.

Wild Cards will be invading France as well. We've just closed a deal with J'ai Lu for French translations of the first six volumes in the original series: WILD CARDS, ACES HIGH, JOKERS WILD, ACES ABROAD, DOWN & DIRTY, and ACE IN THE HOLE. (More foreign deals are in the offing but I will hold off on those till the contracts are signed).

We've had a long strange run with Wild Cards... but from all appearances, we're only getting started. If you haven't tried the books yet, what are you waiting for?

Hiya, George! Hiya Hiya!

I've been into ASOIAF for more than a decade now, and didn't think I'd have the time to pick up another of your series for a while (I'm a slow reader). But earlier this year, in preparation for a road trip, my parents swung by the library to pick out something you wrote in audiobook form. We got volume 3 of Selections from Dreamsongs, and I became hooked on Wild Cards after hearing Adrian Paul read Shell Games.

So I'm a fan of two of your series now!

I'm excited for you
That means you still haven't discovered Tuf Voyaging, or the Thousand Worlds, or Armageddon Rag, or Fevre Dream...you have no idea what you're missing. Hurry up! : )

I've been a faithful reader of WILD CARDS since 1987. And the only person in the world who wishes you went on to complete AVALON rather than getting distracted by those wolves in the snow. Ah well.

Who are the authors whom have been invited to add stories to the new edition of ACES ABROAD?

Good grief... more original stories for old volumes? I already have multiple versions of each book, thanks to the iBooks releases. You're going to make me neurotic!

Still, glad to see the series continuing and flourishing.

Re: 2 Cool.
That's actually an old cover, from the book club edition.

We won't have our new cover for some time.

Wild Cards
Sounds Great! I've been a fan of the Wild Cards series since the beginning and loved them all. Currently reading Fort Freak. My favorite char. from the whole series was Zelazny's Sleeper. Any chance we might see him in any of the new books? Did he pass over the rights to the char. before he passed away, just wondering?

Thanks, take care

Congrats
All I have read of Wildcards has been the 2 stories ("Shell Games" and "From the Journal of Xavier Desmond") in Dreamsongs Volume II. I enjoyed them along with your other short stories. Will you have another edition to Dreamsongs? I heeded your advice on what to do when waiting for the next volume in ASOIAF and now want to read all of your work.

Re: Congrats
DREAMSONGS is actually a reprint of my retrospective collection GRRM: A RRETROSPECTIVE, originally published by Subterranean. It is pretty much the definitive collection of my work, at least up until 2003, the year it was originally published. There are no plans to add another volume to it.

That is not to say that I might not do another collection some day, when and if I have enough new material to make it worthwhile.

Meanwhile, you might look for some of my old, out of print collections, which contain stories that DREAMSONGS does not. (Although really, DREAMSONGS has all the best stuff).

Any word yet on who's providing the new Aces Abroad stories, or is that still to be decided?

Yet to be determined. Three writers not in the original book, that's all we know for sure.

Tremendous news!
I really, really enjoyed Fort Freak. A nice blend of classic characters/writers and new blood. And I am excited for Lowball (and High Stakes!). Also glad to hear there's new material forthcoming in Aces Abroad. Not my favorite title, but there is definitely room there for exploration of other countries! TO JETBOY!

your books have changed my life.
not only have they kept me entertained through long long months, but i have learnt from them, mmuch and more about the people that surround me. it scares me to think that so much glorious narrative could come from the mind of only one man and make so much sense. thankyou. i am only 19 but one day my children will read your books. required reading. ps i believe there are two things that make you great-- the ability to describe an event front multiple perspctive and give the reader a sense that they can make up their own mind ( to an extent) what the facts are. -- the fact that i feel that there is a code to be discovered, through prophecy and dream states i believe you have already laid a web where the smart reader can deduce certain climaxes in the novel - this is a beautiful thing and i have NEVER seen it done so masterfully. again. thnkyou so much. truly.

also - i bet my life john snow is the son of rhaegar and lyanna :)

Where to start?
Hi,

I'd love to start reading Wild Cards, but I have no idea where to start. It goes back so far and the thought of having to read everything before I can catch up to the present is a little intimidating.

Where would be a good place to start? If there's no convient break-in point I suppose there's nothing for it but to read from the very first issue.

Re: Where to start?
Start with INSIDE STRAIGHT, the first of the "next generation" books, which is in print and available as a mass market paperback.
