Thank You

The NEW YORK TIMES bestseller list for August 19 has been released. Here 'tis:

A DANCE WITH DRAGONS is on the list, hanging in there at #10 in hardcover bestsellers. Which is not news by itself. DANCE has been on the list for a long time, moving down, moving up, but never quite falling off. For 52 weeks.

That's the news. DANCE has been on the NYT list for one full year.

I never could have imagined this, not in my wildest dreams.

Copy of DWD5

This is a terrific moment for me, of course, but it is nothing I could ever have achieved without the help of others... so very many others...

I owe them thanks.

Thank you to me editors and publishers, past and present, to Anne Groell, Scott Shannon, Nita Taublib, Jennifer Hershey, Irwyn Applebaum, to my valiant and tireless publicists David Moench and Chris Artis, and to all the other great folks at Bantam Spectra and Random House.

Thank you to all the critics and reviewers, who gave the book such outstanding notices, not to mention all sorts of cool awards. I have never had a book better reviewed.

Thanks for all the journalists and feature writers and bloggers who conducted interviews, ran contests, and helped spread the word.

Thanks to Parris, who was with me through every page, and to Ty, my acerbic assistant, who helped crack the whip and spurred me on and kept the trolls at bay. One of these days he may even teach me to say, "no."

Thanks to the Brotherhood Without Banners. Fans and friends, AND they throw the best party at worldcon.

Thanks for all the booksellers and librarians everywhere. You're all heroes.

Thanks to Mike Lombardo and Sue Naegle and Richard Plepler and Mara Mikilian and all the rest of the great folks at HBO, and thanks especially to Brian Cogman, David Benioff, and Dan Weiss, to Peter Dinklage, Emilia Clarke, Sean Bean, Lena Headey, Mark Addy, Jack Gleeson, Nicholaj Coster-Waldau, Sophie Turner, Isaac Hempstead Wright, Kit Harrington, Maisie Williams, Conleth Hill, Michelle Fairley, and the rest of the greatest cast on television, and to our amazing cast and phenomenal directors. A DANCE WITH DRAGONS would likely have made the NYTimes list without the GAME OF THRONES series, but beyond doubt, it is the show that has kept the books riding high for so long. You've all done amazing work.

But most of all, thanks to you, my readers. You were the ones who bought the book a year ago when it first hit the shelves, and you are the ones who are still buying it today, and pressing copies on your lovers and kin, and telling your friends to buy their own copies. Luck can get a book on the list, even keep it there for a week or two... but only a long, sustained passion and great word of mouth can keep a title on the TIMES list for one solid year. So take a bow, readers. I owe it all to you.

All I can say is... keep reading. The best is yet to come.

A little story about my copy: I pre-ordered it from Amazon and when it came out it was set to arrive on my birthday. The day rolled around and the package hadn't arrived. I checked with UPS who stated that it had been left on my porch (we have a closed in porch) but it wasn't there. I finally checked the front step and found it hidden under a bush where it had spent the day in the pouring rain!
I then got to wait several impatient days to read it while I dried the poor book out.

George, your amazing books are some of best things in my life and I live a pretty great life.

Thank you so much for creating them. All we do is shell out a few dollars and for that we receive so so much. You are the one making the magic happen.

Congrats !

Russia is awaiting you to come, dear George! Russian-language readers are a huge market and we love your great works. So don't forget us and welcome. BTW our nature is Winterfell naturally.

Just read all the books for the 3rd time! DWD was awesome and it certainly deserved the recognition! I cannot believe that I missed meeting you last summer when you were in Burlington Mass..... my son said he would gladly go to a Comic Con one of these days... come on back to Boston!
Aug. 12th, 2012 06:52 pm (UTC)
I will return to Boston, I have no doubt... though more likely for a Boskone than for a comicon.

For my comicon needs, I go to San Diego, and every once in a while NYC.

It's thank YOU for creating that amazing world.
We can' wait to read the next book.
(Common, we are arguing of how it will roll for the last year or so).

The best is yet to come!
Love the last line, noone deserves it more than you Mr. Martin. So looking forward to the next books. You're amazing, and this is the best story ever told.

WOW, I had no idea!!!
That is a remarkable feat, I wonder if anybody else has accomplished that?

Congratulations, Sir Master Writer, you deserved it (and yes, all your fans did, as well).

Yes, many writers have been on the TIMES list for a year or more.

It is a first for me, but not a "no one ever did this before" first.

Very cool. Congratulations!

See you in Chicago.

Yay! Way to go! Can't wait for the next one! Right now I am reading the series again from the beginning. I like the HBO series, too, but I prefer the books.

I do wonder if this is why the US paperback was pushed back again to March 2013? Is that the reason, or was there an issue with the preview chapter?
Aug. 12th, 2012 11:21 pm (UTC)
Re: Congratulations
No issue with the preview chapter.

Yes, this was a big part of the reason. Booksellers deluged Bantam with requests to delay the mass market, since the hardcover is still selling so strongly.

And we do listen to our booksellers. (Mostly)

Congratulations Mr Martin. I just finished the book today. It's taken me a while and it was magnificent. VERY VERY much looking forward to the next one and am quite upset that now I have to find a book to fill the VOID left in my life! I usually only start reading series books once they have been finished to avoid the depression which inevitably follows when finishing the book and having to wait for the next installment, but I'm glad I made the exception for A Song of Fire and Ice! x

That is awesome!! Congratulations, sir!!!

Congratulations, this is remarkable. Is only the reflection of your brilliant mind.

Here in Brazil you are on the bestseller list for a long time, also as expected.

Aug. 13th, 2012 02:04 pm (UTC)
but, Sir, if YOU had not written such a book we readers wouldn't have to buy anything worth sticking on that list for a whole year!!!
Take a bow. No, a thousand, a million and more bows!

PS: of course I'll be around for the "best that's yet to come", I promise!!!! ^_____^

I think in order to celebrate another sample from The Winds of Winter is in order.

well earned, Brother and Teacher.

- Queen Cometha of the Night's Watch

(this is actually true - you've been SUCH an inspiration that I've done such amazing, immense work.. just to get back to the book. well, I do bear a "Valar Morghulis" flourished on my arm, and me & my black labrador Burzum patrol our living area (that does change) whenever we feel like it. results? for the second night in a row, all of the northern peninsula of my City sleeps terribly calmly. I am the fire that burns against the cold. my friends do thing of me more like of Daenerys, if she were to dye her hair red, but who knows.. who knows :) basically, this is why I asked about Europe. nevermind, though, I do have a plan of going States-wise as soon as I become aunt. In the meantime, looking forward for the continuation of the saga.. note I didn't say end.)

how many copies have sold?
This is very impressive. Most epic fantasy (non-Harry Potter/Twilight stuff) generally doesn't stick in the Bestseller list for all that long. It seems like there is a base of fans that go out and buy it when it first comes out then it slips out of best seller list.

Would you be willing to tell us how many copies have sold?

I am going to crack up if I see Paul Ryan reading A Dance with Dragons on the campaign trail.

I've made every friend and family member I have buy and read the books. ;)

Loved. Every. Page.
A Dance With Dragons is the most beautifully written book I've ever read. You just get better all the time, George. An Entire Year on the NYT Hardback Best Seller list. That's astonishing. It's one of the most popular books on the NYT list in history.

I wonder how many copies "The Winds of Winter" will sell on its release date. It'll be a staggering number.
